  • 14 College students arrested for Motorcycle racing on public roads

14 youngsters from various engineering colleges in Vijaywada were arrested and produced in court on Monday.

The students were participating in illegal road races on the outskirts of the city. The cops on a tip off managed to arrest 14 of them. The 14 bikes of the youths were impounded.

    K. Dharmendra, Circle Inspector -

Cases were registered against all the riders for Rash and Negligent driving and were fined accordingly.

This is a major problem which exists across the country. It is difficult for the police to keep checks on every road in the country. Such riders give bikers in general a bad name. When in the process of nabbing or stopping these people, if they get injured then the cops have to pay the brunt of mob fury.

It is therefore necessary to talk to and help educate youngsters in channeling their energies and resources into something constructive, if not such mindless losses will continue to happen.

Awesome. Whenever I return home late from work, there are always a handful of lidless drunk idiots riding their bikes thinking they are MotoGP champs. Wish they get the right "treatment" from the police, the judiciary and the media. These morons who endanger other people's lives should have their licenses revoked.

Just curious. What would be your reaction if these same people were fully geared and not drunk?

What kind of a question is this? It is still illegal and wrong to race on public roads.. :/

If a person is conscientious enough to be fully geared and ride without drinking, then he surely won't race on crowded city streets. Such people will either take to the nearest 6-lane highway to fulfil their need for speed, or would chose a closed track/field/asphalt (if they are into stunting)

Maybe what Dishayu meant was that very often geared motorcyclists are targeted for 'racing!', even when they are quietly sitting on the road catching a chai. Or maybe not!

Happens quite often, cops mistake geared up bikers to be racing.

If this happened in Blore, the number would be 140 or lot more!

But the residents complained multiple times. Even police had warned them before. So clearly, geared responsible riders would never do that!

But bikers branded as racers is common and there is nothing we can do about it. Maybe xbhp can add a chapter on motorcycle safety gears etc on curriculum of police training manuals??

Govt. does not help the racers who race on tracks in Chennai and Coimbatore, makes it as difficult as possible for WSBK to enter India. Building race tracks in every city will happen in

That's a BIG assumption. I think we can all agree that drunk driving or riding gear has nothing to do with racing desires. I don't drink (at all) and i am semi-geared (helmet+jacket) most of the time and i can, without any shame admit have racing desires. BUT i have the conscience to not race of public roads and there are plenty of people i personally know who do race on public roads with gear on, so false and very broad presumption on your part.

Spot on. Geared bikers are immediately percieved as racers. A geared biker going 70 in 3rd gear (i.e. high rpm/noise) has a much MUCH higher probability of "being a nuicence" than a non geared biker going 80 in 5th gear.

mumbai police's point of view about riders:
                          1. every motorcycle rider is a thief or a chain-snatcher!
                          2. motorcycle rider not wearing a helmet? penalize him for chai+pani
                          3. motorcycle rider wearing full riding gear? penalize him for chai+pani & illegit racing [what is legit racing anyway? they've no clue]
                          4. motorcycle rider having any form of wire dangling out of his helmet? penalize him for chai+pani & for committing the offense of listening to music while riding
                          5. more than 2 motorcycle riders, riding in a perfectly disciplined group / formation riding? penalize them for chai+pani & earn brownie points for apprehending a bunch of 'about-to-begin-race' riders!
                          6. more than 2 motorcycle riders, wearing full riding gear enjoying a cutting-chai @ road-side tapri? the've just completed a race &/or have robbed a bank! penalize them anyway!
                          7. any & all of the above, if done by a girl? ogle / stare as much as u can @ her wobbling t|ts as if u were seeing a T-rex alive for the first time in ur life & simply let her ride by!

now on a more serious note, i.m.h.o., racing on the streets is something done only by nitwits & nincompoops!

any rider, who's done any form of real riding, knows 4 things by heart:
                          - respect ur ride
                          - respect urs & everybody else's life
                          - respect the law of the land
                          - its the journey that matters, often more so, than the destination itself

(if they were truly guilty of the crime) these nitwits should be bare-ass whipped so that their butt hurts everytime they saddle their ride & they remember that they cud have not only killed themselves but also killed someone else too!

                          raascalaaaa! X-(

@whymail : Dude, you have an amazing sense of humour! I just laughed loudly in office reading your post & got a stare from everyone

Jokes apart, is the cop situation really that bad in Mumbai? Pity you mumbikers & I totally agree on what you have written on serious note, road racing/stunting has become a plague in Bangalore.. One would think that those dios/activas are meant to be ridden WITH k&n & WITHOUT helmets! & 2 strokes are race bikes and every other vehicle on the road is his opponent! Sigh!

am glad that u found my rant to be amusing.
being able to survive for last 41 years & being able to maintain my sanity while i am going thru my mid-life crisis; hardly anything surprises me anymore these days!
suffice to say, mumbai cops r the amongst the best-of-the-worst in this galaxy / milky-way.
i always carry loose change [read Rs. 50/- notes] in my riding jacket / shirt pocket to 'patao' a pandu, if god-forbid i'm ever pulled over for an offense - that has not happened in a very very long time now tho!
hell, being terrorized... err... married for last 14 years... i'm not scared of even terrorists / cops anymore!

sad to read about the state of things in BLR. its not much different here anyway.
just 2 nights back, i was returning home from work @ around 1030pm - me cruising @ 50kmph
on a completely deserted road, saw a honda activa with a HID-kit fitment in my RVM honking away as if everybody in the vicinity were either dead or deaf.
i shrugged my shoulders, let that jerk overtake me.
2 nitwit morons were astride that bike... no helmet either!
they flew by me & prolly unawares of the road ahead, hit a large speed-braker head-on.
i saw the activa go airborne... saw the pillion kid getting thrown off the bike... saw the bike & the rider smash in to a tree alongside with a loud screech.
                              i approached them in seconds...
                              got off my ride...
checked the pillion kid if he was alive... he was!
checked the rider... no bones broken... he was in a dazed state trying to get up... he was alive too! *sad*
slapped him hard... he fell down again! (that was fun & i kinda liked it... honestly)
walked to the scooter... picked it up... central-standed it & rode off home.
such incidents are a dime a dozen these days! X-(
