Default Royal Enfield 650 Twin Engine Unveiled. Prices out too!

Royal Enfield has unveiled its first modern twin-cylinder engine at its new Technology Centre in Leicestershire, England. This new 650cc, the air-cooled parallel twin will power the newest generation of Royal Enfield motorcycles.

The new platform is a 4 stroke, single overhead cam, air-cooled, 648cc parallel twin cylinder engine developed by Royal Enfield’s UK Technology Centre and Chennai teams. Precisely engineered to be able to accelerate and deliver higher power and torque at lower RPMs, this new engine has an output capability of 47bhp and 52Nm torque. This makes the ride experience hassle-free and smooth.

The engine maintains an under-stressed 9.5:1 compression ratio and the fuel injection system ensures that smooth, accessible power is available at all times. The focus of the development was on giving adequate torque, spread broadly throughout the rev range so that riders can tap into it instantly at any time without the need for excessive shifting. This crankshaft uses a 270-degree firing order, which gives a high degree of character to the engine’s power delivery.

The motor retains Royal Enfield’s ‘air-cooled’ engine legacy, which leads to a simple, cleaner, more elegant look with fewer components and less weight. Using ambient air-flow combined with engine oil to keep engine temperature at an optimal level means that a radiator, fan, hoses, and other components are unnecessary.

The official launch of the complete bike to be expected before April 2018.

    Engine Specifications
Type 4 stroke, 270 degree crank, single overhead cam, air-oil cooled, 648cc parallel twin
    Power 47bhp @ 7100rpm
    Torque 52Nm @ 4000rpm
    Bore x Stroke 78mm x 67.8mm
    Compression Ratio 9.5:1
    Gearbox 6 speed
    Fuel Management Fuel injection
Ignition Digital spark ignition - TCI

Also, the Royal Enfield has announced the launch of its new Technology Centre in Bruntingthorpe Proving Grounds, Leicestershire. The brand new facility, located
at the heart of central Midlands area of UK, is housed at the largest privately owned vehicle test track facility, thereby ensuring ease of access to a host of vehicle development, engineering and testing related facilities.

Royal Enfield has been investing extensively towards increasing capacities, infrastructure and product, and as well as people capabilities. The new technology centre in UK was set-up with a view to bring a more global approach towards product and technology. Also, the fact that UK is the birthplace of the brand, made it an obvious choice.

The UKTC (UK Technology Centre) acts as the innovative hub and global headquarters for product strategy, product development, industrial design, research, programme management and analysis for Royal Enfield. The facility boasts of state-of-the-art equipments and modern workshop facilities that enable its experienced engineers to develop authentically styled and accessible motorcycles and future concepts.

UKTC has a contemporary and futuristic industrial aesthetic spread across approximately 3,000m2 and over two levels. The vast office floor provides a modern workspace for employees, with an impressive Industrial Design Studio, Engine, Electrics, Chassis Build, Spray-shop, Model-shop, Metal work and Part store on the other floor. The spacious Industrial Design Studio has variable-height modelling platforms and a suite of workshop facilities to bring the majority of model preparation in-house. The 470 m2 Engine Test building, houses the latest dynamometers and emissions equipment for testing.

Since commencing operations in January 2015, the UKTC is now running with 120+ employee base, working on multiple projects, that includes development of future products and platforms. The highly anticipated, first modern Royal Enfield 650 twin and the new range of motorcycles has been developed between the teams at UKTC and Chennai, India.

HD Street is physically much smaller than RE. It looks puny. Above all new RE will be a lot cheaper than HD Street and Bonnie too.

In Chennai, the on road price of Bonneville Street Twin is 8.5 lakhs, for a CKD with 900cc, 55 bhp, 80 Nm torque, ABS with traction control and Triumph's premium build quality. Which is expensive by one lakh in my opinion.

So for the specifications of 650 twins, being locally manufactured, less sophistication and RE build, I guess my expectations are ex-showroom price of 3-3.5 lacs maximum so an on road price of Rs 4-4.5 lakhs.

This is 50% less price than the Street Twin and this is what RE should aim at. At this price it's 2 lakhs below on road price of Harley's Street 750 too. This pricing might make them VFM offerings with differentiation and get good sales numbers is what I reckon.

Hopefully they don't get too greedy!

After Himalayan drop in sales (pun intended) hope RE gives top priority to QC, would love to own an amazingly crafted machine, made in India, and that too where I live!

This would be an amazing base bike to future custom bikes, heck this could be a hit on the international market too! Continental GT was not fast enough for the developed country's roads, this could just be fast enough to be picked.
