Superbikes: A new way of life

This is a sticky topic.

If certain things fall in place, and you work your mind towards it... it should not be too distant, in my opinion 3-4 years max! It is "working yourself towards it" which is the key... A new way of life, which means a new way of thinking. It is a different philosophy altogether.Originally posted by sabret00the View Post

Ken bhaiya, I really didn't get this line ... If the brakes are properly run-in, Will it STILL take longer for the Sbk to stop, despite better grip & brakes? Also remember, even when you get used to your big bike, these bikes, despite having phenomenal braking, do not stop easy. It is much tougher to stop a Superbike at 100 than a Karizma at 120+.
How?

I'd guess its got something to do with momentum !! It needs more control. The stopping distance is low, but without proper care, these can give you an ugly tankslapper !!Originally posted by Samarth 619 View PostKen bhaiya, I really didn't get this line ... But the overall experience of braking wud be better than say a ZMA I'd have believe !!
Maybe Ken sir will decode it better !!Kawasaki Ninja : Because lazy sunday afternoons should be despatched at 160 kmph!!!
Hyosung Aquila : Because sometimes you need to look cool while riding at 40 kmph and you can do that only on a cruiser !!!

well its mostly momentum n inertia put together.
these bikes are more bulky than anything you have ridden. plus the fact that they move faster than anything you can imagine. that also spells that even if your reaction time is the same, you would still travel further than what you had anticipated.
another problem with these bikes is that they lose traction pretty soon. you can thank the tyres & our roads for it. these bikes are basically track-bred. so are the tyres. in the centre there are hardly any grooves. most of them (and deeper) are towards the edges for giving u better grip while cornering or leaning. the tyres are designed to have the least possible but safe friction towards the centre so that the bike moves easier.
hope that clarified something atleast!!

from what i know is there are less grooves 'coz it provides a bigger contact patch(TRACTION) and if there are grooves on the sides & while leaning won't they compromise your traction?Originally posted by samyakmodi View Postwell its mostly momentum n inertia put together.

i think i replied to this ages ago. the grooves in the tires are for the wet roads. grooves do not give grip. the rubber does. hence race bikes run slicks and when it rains they have heavily grooved tires.
also a superbike most definitely can stop faster than your indian bikes. 2x 320 mm discs and 4 piston callipers along with top notch pads and sticky tires gurantee that.

Absolutely true!Originally posted by csgup1 View Posti think i replied to this ages ago. the grooves in the tires are for the wet roads. grooves do not give grip. the rubber does. hence race bikes run slicks and when it rains they have heavily grooved tires.
Funnily this is not always the case! At least not on Indian roads where often during panic braking situations you may find yourself on dust or gravel or dung or simply the tyre sliding away... unable to explain that one.Originally posted by csgup1 View Postalso a superbike most definitely can stop faster than your indian bikes. 2x 320 mm discs and 4 piston callipers along with top notch pads and sticky tires gurantee that.
Thanks. I have tried to convey what I felt.Originally posted by julianpaul View PostThis is a beautiful article. You get that 'from the heart' feel when reading. The pics superbly complement the words too.

of course if theres crap on the road there is only soo much sticky tyres and braking power can do and lighter bikes will be easier to control
im sure you know this but its also based on front wheel braking. the rear brake would only contribute 5-10 percent of total braking power.

That happens..and even if it doesn't actually happen, the uncertainty about the road underneath is always on the back of one's mind and that affects how hard one brakes.Originally posted by ken cool View PostFunnily this is not always the case! But there is one notable advantage the big bikes provide. And that has to do with their superb control feedback. The rider can actually feel every incremental difference in the braking force as he makes millimetric lever and pedal movements. This amazing feedback is just not there in any of our Indian bikes (with the probable exception of the R15 to some extent). This ability to 'feel' the contact patch while braking is a great confidence booster.

That was really a deep study i did bout sbks for the first time.
. Real good post Mr.Ken. I probably learnt more from this than i wud hav from an owner's manual for a superbike!!
. Also about the pillion's experience, had been(only as pillion) on a frnd's '06 R1, when braking its as if the bike is doing a stoppie when he braked hard and got pushed hard enough to feel being thrown off from the back seat and at times when it came to a complete stop i literally stood up on the foot pegs! But the rest was all fun. Kudos to all superbikes and their owners.
