Re: Third Time Lucky : Triumph Daytona 675 Ownership Review
So I did my 1st Track Weekend @ thunderhill raceway in Willows, CA.
It was eye opener in terms of basic prep for the bike. I was a total newbie at this. Removed mirrors, disconnected turn signals and taped of all lights. Bought a 5 gallon can for fuel to use at the track (cheaper to buy outside), borrowed a wheel chock from a friend to fasten the bike in the trailer. Teamed up with a friend who helped me during the entire process. Friday afternoon, we loaded up both our bikes (his a 06' CBR 600R frame with 03' engine track only bike) in a rented trailer and headed out. It was a 3.5 hr drive.
Saturday morning we were at the track at 7:15, after registration and the tech inspection (they check for condition of tires, brakes, leaking oil, etc) we sat at the "mandatory" riders meeting. The track officials talk about track etiquette, rules, meaning of different flags etc. Since I was in C group (Novice Riders - 1st time at track) they also had a session about
track layout, lines to take, following track instructors etc.
After that we headed out to our pit...got tire pressures checked by the "Pirelli Tire Guy" and started gearing up. The entire paddock is like Disney Land. All kinds of bikes, all kinds of people, all just waiting to unleash on the track. Every track session is 20 mins long and features only one group of riders...A, B or C. So by the end of the day, everyone gets to do about 7-8 20 minute sessions on the track.
My first session was just following an instructor at a slow place the entire time, while he tried to show us the lines to use at the track etc. The following sessions you are free to ride without an instructor, or you can ask an instructor to follow or lead you. I kept alternating between going by myself and following an instructor. After every session on the track, the C group has a class room session where the instructor would talk about various topics like body positioning, lines for each corner, apexes etc. It was overwhelming at times. Its so much information to retain and apply. In any case, Day 1 I spent just trying to get comfy with the track configuration.
Day 2 was much better. I upped the pace, got some body positioning tips from my friend and tried to apply them. I had an instructor follow me and at the end of the session he said " you are concentrating too much on body positioning and messing up your lines...some of those lines were very wide" He later figured it was only my 2nd day at the track (at any track for that matter) and told me to learn the proper lines first. Take it corner by corner. Everything will come after that. Pretty much what my friends told me. Over all it was a fun weekend....it was definitely more fun than I had expected. The track photographer took several pictures of me, I bought the one I think which summarizes my day. Plenty of room for improvement in terms of body positioning, the line I took was fine at this corner.
Also here are some pictures of my tires before and after the track day (about 180 miles on the track).

Re: Third Time Lucky : Triumph Daytona 675 Ownership Review
Hey the tyre conditions after the track looks quite weird. How much Km you did on tract which made the tyres that bad. Was the track quite rough?
Also tell me how much speed max you did so far. I have completed 950 Km and done with first servicing on my Daytona.

Nothing weird about the tire condition. They just got scrubbed in well, also remember you usually run lower tire pressures on the track for better grip. Track temps were high and also there are 100s of bikes putting down rubber on the track. I did a street ride after the track day and the tires look like how they were before the track day. I did about 180 miles during the 2 track days.Originally posted by maxtheo View PostHey the tyre conditions after the track looks quite weird. Max speed I did was on the front straight at the track day, about 120 mph. You should be able to increase the revs lil more after the 1st service. More fun awaits. Stay safe." RIDE In Peace MARCO #58"
