  • Our BMW riding group with photos (Videos Page 4)

Normally in this superbike section the discussions center around the CBRs or R1s or GSXRs or ZZRs or Hyabusas etc. Hence, for a change I thought, why not post some pics of our BMW riding group here, since BMWs are rarely talked about in the forum.

With the temp close to 40 degrees C on friday(our week-end), yours sincerely clicked all the photos at our starting point before the ride. Since I did not have a pillion, I could not take any pics during the ride. Anyway I have marked the bikes also for those of you who are not familiar with BMW bikes.

BMW bikes present at Starting point:
    1 R1200RT
    1 R1100RT
    2 K1200R

You are absolutely right. All that people discuss about Sbks here is CBR and R1 and Gixer and thats it! Pretty narrow discussions that ways. And thus our circulation of knowledge is pretty limited. I loved your presentation of the Beamers. For once we have something different to look at. The K1200R looks pretty neat. There are people who do not like asymmetrical headlights. People who see Beamers regulary would not mind this.

Thanks Haroon for initiating us to the very different world of BMW motorcycles. I admit that I am quite ignorant about the characteristics of such bikes other than their famed ruggedness.
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

            Hi Haroon
Thanks for the great pics! It is a new world for me for sure.

Will it be too much to ask for a ride report of the K1200R?

            Awaiting more stuff from you.

my fav is the latest one. The S1000R. BMW quirky design at its best. When i first saw its pictures, I actually thought it was the rumored TVR bike which never materialised. Anywho, thank you for the pics and write up Haroon.

I was surfing on my phone when i came across this thread and I shifted to the computer right away. BMWs have always caught my attention in every way possible way and this thread was no exception.

Nice pictures there. How far did you guys travel? I think the most beautiful bike in your group is the new K1200R. Aggressive styling. Has the 1300R been released in the market yet? I am in love with that motorcycle. There are a few videos on youtube but i guess the bike hasn't been released yet. It has the anti-wheelie and anti-spin features. BMWs like you already mentioned have not been made to do topspeeds but I believe the k1300R could make a difference. I rate it the best looking bike in the world. Tiny video of the k1300R, but the sound quality is not great - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ul4GIIzHGlw
My love for BMW also traces down to Germany. That country has interested me in many many ways. They have so many high quality automobile manufacturers that are a cut above the rest. Although I haven't ridden them I feel the bikes have a different feeling, higher quality and reliability like many other german manufacturers. BMW made bikes before cars and I'm proud of that fact.

I remember you telling me at one point of time about the GS Adventure looking like a well bred stallion compared to the regular GS1200. Must've been beautiful seeing one in real. I love the ad of the BMW 1200RT in Norway, everyone here reading this post must watch it. Its beautiful. (Remember to put your volume up)

YouTube - BMW Motorcycles R1200RT! (Long Version)

I was talking to my friends cousin yesterday who has a 10R and CBR600 in California. He was shocked to know that we in India ride for 3 hours one shot. He said he could not take more than one and half hours in one shot on these bikes. I'm sure people like Ken and Rossiter may disagree, but I think riding a superbike around in complete comfort is a different feeling? And I think thats possible on a BMW with the added comfort of reliability.

The bike in my display picture - the r69 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=se5uJW8vqDY&NR=1

Haroon, please do bring in more pictures and discussions about BMWs, I would love to chip in and be a part of it. Cheers!

                        Wow !!
Awesome group ride !! I saw a K1200S when I was in UK. Looks really kingsize, wheelbase 10cms more than even the Hayabusa !!
Kawasaki Ninja : Because lazy sunday afternoons should be despatched at 160 kmph!!!
Hyosung Aquila : Because sometimes you need to look cool while riding at 40 kmph and you can do that only on a cruiser !!!

Wow- I am thrilled to see all the responses. Thanks to all for the good wishes.

So the overwhelming choice here seems the K1200R (OK now its the K1300R). BTW, during one of our rides, the K1200R and a GSXR1000 had a drag and both crossed 250 kmph, but the GSX was a fraction ahead.

@Aryan- the BMW Jeddah group for many years was a one man army- Myself. Its only about 2 years since the showroom was set up and more guys joined in. Ofcourse, its an informal group with mostly mature riders, so no troublemakers and unlike the Harley group, we welcome all brands of bikes in our group. There is also a guy who ocassionally brings his Suzuki Burgman 650 scooter.

@ Ken. Thanks buddy. Sure, the more often you see the asymetric headlights, you start liking them. As & when I get hold of more beemer activity, I shall keep sharing.

@ pudix- The K1200R with black wheels is owned by the BMW dealer. So I may possibly be able to take it for a ride during the coming weeks and give my observations.

@ 46wannabe- I think the S1000RR deliveries should start from end-Dec 09. Only 1000 of them will be made in the first year as a pre-condition for BMW to enter it in the WSBK championships.

@silver_falcon_46- So you are as passionate about BMW bikes as me. We did about 240kms for the morning. I was told the new 1300R is on its way here. Basically the anti-wheelie & anti-spin is the same feature-ASC, wherein if it is switched on and you try popping a wheelie, the sensor will take note of the different speeds of the front wheel and rear wheel and cut off the engine momentarily or something like that- so you end up making a fool of yourself!! The ASC is now an option on almost all the R model & K model bikes basically to avoid a tail-spin.
The 2009 GS is in the showroom. I shall take pictures soon.
So you changed your display picture from the Orange K1300R to R69. Thats is a real classic bike. Still lots of them in perfect running condition around the world. I know there are 2-3 of them in Mumbai.

Hahaha, so you noticed that din't you. I am aware of what ASC does but I wasn't aware that it was a feature on the K1200's too. I thought it was first debuted on the 1300 series. From the reading and videos that I've seen related to ASC, it looks like it engages the clutch when the sensor realizes different speeds. Because I noticed that there was no change in the note or rpm of the engine unlike traction control where the engine power delivery is altered by rpm. I maybe wrong. hehe, yeah you can make a big fool out of yourself if ASC is turned on and if you plan to show off in front of the chickas. I am impressed that the K1200 can go above 250kmph. I always thought they ran out of breath at around 220-230. Pretty impressive! Waiting to see how the K1300R performs.

I love the R69 and going by youtube it does like there are quite a few perfect condition R69s. I have a friend here who has a Triumph TwinSpeed 1947 model and that thing is beauty by itself. I hope to see one in real someday. That engine note is orgasmic. More rides more photographs please do. and btw in case you're not aware, my avatar says "BMW herz" which means Bmw heart or BMW soul in Deutsche.
