Hv a question regards my Montauk. Its the MoDiTec fault diagnosis system. I dont hv that. Will any diagnostic scanner do? The guys of Navnit Motors who has the BMW franchise told me to go to their workshop and talk to their head tech. Can you find out from your friends at the BMW in Jeddah. Thanks

Jimmyd- The MoDiTec is specifically made for BMW and you can not use a diagnostic system from another brand. Also, BMW bikes have a different diagnostic system from that used for BMW cars so I am not sure if Navneet has the bike diagnostic tool.
Anyways, the MoDiTec only helps diagnose the problem quicker & more accurately, whereas a good mechanic can still get to the fault in most cases without this instrument. What is the nature of your problem? If you need some help, pls do let me know.
Off topic, the below website has a wealth of information for the BMW cruiser owners. Do have a look:

Glad Jimmyd it was just a query
.
Actually the oilheads like yours and mine are fairly simple and you can service them without the MoDiTec, but the new hexheads is a different ball game. Things like EWS resetting and even the canbus system for the wiring means that if we fiddle the wrong way with any of the electrics, the whole system shuts down and you need the dealer to set things right after plugging it into their system. Also heard of some special GS911 tool etc. Besides, during warranty if something were to fail on the hexheads and the dealer needs to claim it from BMW, he has to give a print out of the error code from the onboard computer and then BMW will instantly recognize what caused the problem and then decide to accept the warranty claim or not. Dont know why BMW makes things so complicated.

Nice to see technical discussions on BMWs.
As for the note of the engines, I do remember listening to the note of the GS1200 and I wasn't impressed. Sounded like a very ordinary 4stroke engine to me. I'm pretty sure they can do magic with the note if they really have to, but then I guess thats deviating from what they do best. An MT01 with a simple twin cylinder air cooled setup sounds gorgeous! I wonder if there are any interesting after market end cans for the traditional BMWs (not the K1200 types) that make a good difference to the note.
Sweet bikes there Jimmy! The one with a non boxer engine, is it a simple single cylinder?sigpic

Yes silver_falcon_46, the exhaust notes on the newer boxer flat-twins with cat convertors are pretty disappointing. Infact, the GS has a little deeper growl than the RT and S versions, so you can imagine the others!!
Actually, I had read a while back that BMW made them quite coz of the strict DB restrictions in Germany as well as the fact that most of their bikes are for long hauls and hence a melow exhaust is less bothersome on the ears on a long journey.
As for the MT or V-Strorm or the boys from milwaukee, the V-Twin has a distinct beat with a kind of fixed rhythm and thats a lot better. But nothing like the in-line fours.....thats music to the ears.
BMW recommends Akrapovic for the GS. It reduces the weight by about 5-6kgs from stock and they claim an increase of 3-4hp on power. BUT the sound is only a shade better than the stock exhaust. The damn Akra slip-on runs about US$ 680! If you however want sound, then its Two Bros.

Oh beautiful man, Im happy, I'm convinced that even a GS can sound good if it has to! Thats all I'm looking for, a mild increase and the slip ons will sure do the job! One of the slip ons sounded like a inline 4. Sounded nice n racy. And I would totally agree with you with the note of the inline 4,they totally give me the goosebumps.Originally posted by Haroon View PostYes silver_falcon_46, the exhaust notes on the newer boxer flat-twins with cat convertors are pretty disappointing. Great pics Haroon. I'm all green with envy. A friend of mine has been persuading me to get the Funduro for touring, and I've been resisting all this while. This thread has made it a bit more hard to resist the Beemer logo

Given the kind of passion you have for touring on big bikes, the GS is a wonderful steed, esp with our road conditions in many parts of India you can take it wherever you want and it has a towering road presence.Last edited by Haroon; 09-17-2009, 02:32 PM.
