I am posting very late over here. But nonetheless enjoyed every bit of the whole experience.

Congrats GS for getting the MT-01. I am not a big fan of MT but the pleasure and pride of owning such a monster in India is incomparable. Not many people go for the naked ones and owning one sets you apart from others.

And thumbs up to Rossiter for taking us through this incredible journey. Loved reading the whole experience. If not goosebumps, it still takes us in a dream world where we are imagining how it feels to start the thought process till we acquire it and ride it.

@GS: The pics are awesome with the farm house being an ideal place to harbour this treasure(MT01)....
Congrats again and the feeling of pride (My passion, my sweat, my money and my MT01)when you started it the first time and went for a spin...

Waiting for the Mumbai ride trip-log, first service report and tons of pics...

Congratulations! It is a beast! In all my riding in the US not bike took my breath away the way MT01 did. Once I pared next to it on the way to an interview and nearly missed the appointment time because I was drooling on it for a good 15 minutes! Once I was riding next to one on the highway and the exhaust note was better than any beethoven symphony! The guy finally sped off and my ZX7R could not catch up!

Now start spending your kids college money on new tires! You will burn a lot of them! College education is over-rated anyways!

A lot has been said about the aural characteristics of the MT-01 twin-cannon exhaust system but I just thought I should add another dimension to the discussion.

A bullet can be loud, bassy, thumps with extended decays or bangs with very quick decay. That is why I love the sound of the bullet so much. Rarely will two enfields sound identical. I believe this is down to the hand-made nature of the motorcycle itself with each one coming off the line being quite unique in nature.

The MT-01 on the other hand is mass-produced. There is very little human involvement in the manufacturing of this motorcycle and while the end result is a well made, reliable and precision road instrument, I am reasonably confident that my MT-01 will sound identical to any other MT-01 that is factory stock. Fortunately for me, the MT-01 is quite rare in India with less than 20 (optimistic estimate) doing the rounds on our roads. I don't believe I will ever come across another MT-01 on the road unless it is at a G2G or a pre-arranged meeting of some sort. The sound made by this bike will therefore always turn heads and get people excited.

It is hard to not be excited by the noise this thing makes when you slot it into 2nd gear at 1500 revs and open up the throttle...the intake noise, exhaust pulses and flatulent sounds accompany this burning of fuel resulting in the sort of drama that people might pay money to experience. When you accelerate hard in the first 3 gears and then shut-off the throttle quickly the noise is like being in the middle of a controlled demolition. The pops and bursts as unburnt fuel makes it's way through the HOT exhaust system is similar to the "waste-gate" souds made by an F1 car as it brakes into a corner while downshifting. The noises made when riding in excess of 150 kph in 5th gear are that of two planets colliding...especially when wide open on the throttle.

The throttle should come with two indicators...Twist backwards for LOUD...Twist forward for LOUD AS WELL

You can try to get around unnoticed given that most people can mistake the front-view for that of the more common FZ-16...however when they hear the wall of thunder arriving towards them...there is no mistaking the fact that they are close to something special...something even the thunder-gods will learn to fear...regardless of which gear...

I am still in Chennai and will be riding to Bangalore tomorrow (due to RTO delays) so the trip-log is delayed by 24 hours.

@GS: What a wonderfully written piece of text, and that too JUST on the aural note of the MT! Loved it. Now, please provide such beautiful text for other parts of the MT too.

P.S: You seem to be TOTALLY enjoying the MT. I can only imagine.

I'll do all this g**nd-masti through the dealership so that my warranty remains intact. Ordering the front fairing (highway riding requires this fitment) and a Stage-II kit...but all in good time. As it is, the bike is phenomenal. I am just used to having a LOT more power but then the usability factor goes for a toss. I love how I can commute and do shopping and dropping runs on this bike as it is right now.

Aryan Bhai - the sound is the primary reason why I bought the MT-01 instead of the R1. Other factors are:

                      - Akhil has the R1...we plan to swap bikes frequently
                      - I wanted an Air-Cooled bike because these handle riding in traffic a bit more easily. Being low-revving, the MT also generates less heat than liquid cooled superbikes.
                      - I didn't want a bike that could touch insane speeds because I WILL go as fast as the bike can go if I find enough road. I am a very cautious rider but who wouldn't try to do 285kmph on the Busa if they had one?
                      - I prefer the "look" of the MT-01 because something like this will never be made again. It doesn't belong in the cruiser section...doesn't belong in the superbike section...and doesn't belong in the retro section either. It is completely unique.

                      The MT-01 only has 5 speeds. 1 Down + 4 Up.

No no no, I think pudix was mentioning the part in the video when you get on the saddle for the first time and Akhil says 'Guru, one down five up' very seriously and holds it for a moment before laughing his guts out

And btw, you and akhil are going to be swapping your bikes? That mean loads and loads of Mumbai Bangalore rides eh?

Very mature decision regarding speeds and the heat generated, low revving machine etc. You nearly have a convert here.

The only downside I see is the difficulty that a pillion faces while sitting on this thing! I have a pillion who has done 700 kms one fine Friday morning and did not have any problems with the underseat exhaust. Only body ache due to the posture. On the way back however we did have heat issues but that was due to a different reason.

Another query... what about saddle bags. You may have seen my saddle bags from bagster. I use them with heat shields on top of the exhausts. Can they be used with the MT?

Oh right...I wanted to kill Akhil then and there but decided to give him a face-full of exhaust instead Yes...we will be swapping rides and there will be plenty of GQ rides or Goa meet-ups. Haven't got that far yet because his bike is still being worked on.

The heat can be an issue here in Chennai but in cooler climates it shouldn't be a problem at all. The pillion will definitely feel the warmth after 100kms and the seating posture is pretty awkward. I don't think the MT-01 can carry a pillion for more than 100kms without discomfort.

There are saddle-bag options available but we'll have to check out the saddle-bags you have. I don't think they'll fit though. There is an MT-01 in the Delhi Yamaha office that belongs to Morita san - perhaps you can write to him to take a closer look? I'll PM you his details.

Yes. It belongs to a different section, called Hooligan. Seriously the exhaust & the sheer massivness of this MT-01 makes me wonder, is this a bike from the movie Transformer??? I am sure it is !
