  • Ride to Shoja-Jalori (H.P.) January 2012

    Hello Folks!

I am planning a 3-4 days ride till Jalori pass via Shoja, Banjar, Aut! possibly in the 2nd or 3rd week of January 2012.
I am hoping to cross Jalori pass from shoja to the other side of Shimla Distt. and to return delhi via shimla. But the only doubt i am having at this juncture is that the Jalori pass might not be open at this time of the year because of heavy snowfall in that region. in that case my plan B would to return via the same route.

Please give your precious inputs if any!

And if somebody also wishes to ride along with me on this route; please share here what best we can do to achieve that target!!

          Hi Sambak,
I had crossed Jalori pass on 25th Dec while going from Sangla to Mandi. There was very less snow at the pass. Just a few patches at on the sunny side and a few corners on the sun deprived side of Shoja.
But, jan end, definitely you will get lots of snow atleast on the Shoja side(sun rays deprived side). Jalori is kept active almost throughout the year as there are JCBs stationed on both the Shoja and Khanag side. Also, accomodation will be available in the rest house at khanag definitely. Infact, considering todays weather, you might get snow even this weekend :-)
I am planning a quick ride to that side - preferably 2 days only(not the republic weekend) Do let me know what dates you have in mind.

            Hi Sambak,

We had done this stretch last year in first week of April and there was snow. Snow not as in uncrossable but there was snow which had graced the place only 2 days ago. I am not sure of this time of the year but considering my knowledge of Himachal's weather this place can snow whenever it will rain there. But as Mik also said it should not delay you much becuase I guess they keep this road open. Have a wonderful ride. This place is sure worth experiencing..

              Hello Mik!!

Thanx for the precious inputs. Actually i haven't decided any specific dates for this one but, i am certain on doing this ride this weekend (say 6th, 7th, 8th) or/else in the third or fourth week of this month...

So let me know if you are comfortable with this arrangement or if anything else you have in mind..

On Friday night and on Saturday, snowfall is expected both in Shoja and Narkanda
I just came back from a 11 day ride so don't have any leaves.
Most probably would like to do something like this

Saturday - 4 am start from ggn
Gurgaon-Mandi-Shoja is 14 hours of fairly brisk riding.

On Sunday (expected to be bright and sunny)
Do a 8am start from Shoja - cross Jalori - Narkanda(it will have snow too probably) - Gurgaon -- Approximately 15 hours considering the possibility of some difficulty due to snow/ice.
So reach gurgaon by 11 at night.

I am fine with it for a brother's sake!!

but dont you think its gonna be kinda hotch potch schedule?

                  mostly tiring than relaxing??

What best we can do in my opinion, is we can leave Friday night (say around midnight) and try and return Delhi by Sunday night and the rest of the middle planning would be the same as you mentioned above.

                  wot say??

Guys good luck for your Shoja ride. Please do provide latest updates on road conditions(near shoja-Khanag) though i am little sceptical about jalori, being a high time for jalori to get snowed out but eagerly waiting for your update on accessibility of Jalori pass from either side. It will be really helpful for me as i am planning to travel there on republic day weekend.

Even i had plans to go there in third or fourth week of this month, but i had to alter it as MIK suggested to do this ride in this week. Let him reply first as what he says; else i'll be more confortable in doing it on republic day..

As if now i am working on following itineraries for my 4days trip(26th to 29th Jan):

                              ITINERARY 1:

                              Day1( 5am to 4-5pm max.)
                              Delhi-Ropar-Mandi-Ghataasani-Barot (roughly 530kms)
                              >Stay at PWD RH(PWD guest house in Barot - India Travel Forum, BCMTouring)

                              Day2
                              Barot-Ghataasani-Mandi-Pandoh-Aut-Banjar-Jibhi-Ghiyagi (100+ kms)
Stay at Shringi Vatika if RH is not available.

                              Day3
Ghiyagi-Shoja-Jalori-Serolsar Lake and back, if weather conditions permit.

                              Day4
                              Ghiyagi-Mandi-Chandigarh-Delhi.

                              ITINERARY2:

                              Day1
                              Delhi-Shimla-Kufri-Narkanda-Kingal-Sainj-Rampur-Jeori-Sarahan
PWD RH(gharat) or GH at Bhimkali Temple Premises.
Its a really long ride for around 14-15hrs. Since we would be crossing Kufri-Narkanda during afternoon, chances of finding black ice patches are less.

                              Day2
Rest in Sarahan and explore the beauty around.

                              Day3
                              Sarahan-Rampur-Sainj-Luhri-Behna-Ani-Khanag
Its a ride for not more than 5-6hrs. We will try to reach Khanag in time so that you can try the trek to Serolsar lake if the route is open.

                              Day4
                              Khanag-Ani-Behna-Luhri-Sainj-Kingal-Narkanda-Kufri-Shimla-Delhi.

Do let me know your views/suggestions on the above itineraries than only we can finalize the things and booked RH/GH for our stay accordingly.
