Hey MAK(madelikeagun), what a wonderful way to write up our Journey, though the memories of the place are still fresh, I re-lived our entire Journey once again. Thanks to Poli for all the wonderful Pics, and rightly said "Life is short, so lets live it like there is no tomorrow. And the most important thing is to be true to people. Be ethical and honest. The moment you leave that behind just to gain your glory in life, you seize to be a human being."Last edited by Pruthvi-p; 07-30-2012, 07:56 PM.

Riding preperation and gear
I am back as promised to write about how we prepared for this great ride. I remember it was back in 2010 when I had my Honda Unicorn, I set out to recruit partners for this job. Just like for a con job.
I got a few friends and acquaintances who expressed interest. That's all I needed. A name. Now I knew who I could go back to when I was prepared myself, so that I could be confident when I send the invitation. It was important to do my homework before I got my group together. There would be many questions and answers had to just come out like an encyclopedia.
After gathering Intel for about a year, planning expense finance and backup plans, the first thing I was able to purchase was my dearest Bull in May 2011. If I was going to do this ride, it had to be on something sturdy, something that might be slow but has range, just like a the old days Long range bombers!
Saying good bye to my old friend was not easy at all
The new guy was like BumbleBee in the beginning. I had to give him a small Mod, something like a Corvette.
What I liked about him the most was this Gun barrel of his!
After my bull joined me things fast forwarded from there. First I needed to gain confidence with my bull. We build a strong bond in time, a partnership and a promise that we would stand by each other no matter what. We became best friends. The confidence I had on my bull and myself about this trip was important as this would build trust and confidence in my recruits.
So Few Modifications later, he got some appealing looks.
And with looks came some capability.

Exactly one year before the Mega ride, both of us were ready to take on Leh. Yeah, bring it on baby!!
No time to loose, I first got my Cramster Tank Bag. I brought one because I found it was very easy to carry to office and use as an office bag. On the weekend, it was my shopping bag.
Having extensively used the tank bag, I was confident to load it and take it to LEH. This bag had a rain coat of its own tested several times so, first piece of puzzle solved ie. Front luggage.
While this happened I went back to whoever expressed interest and got my team set. It was very important for me not to ride with a crowd and not to do solo as I am not riding alone. Also, everyone had to be comfortable with each other.
Then came a navigator. Although very helpful in many situations, a GPS has a mind of its own. It all depends on how the map is designed. I personally found, if you know your North, South, East and West, you can never get lost. So you can do without this thing.
I upgraded the headlamps to this one. It really helped during the Kota ~ Jaipur stretch where there was not a single streetlight all the way. One piece of advise. If you are night riding, you better have the best headlamps and a backup. My 2 X 55W fog lamps were backups and they lit the highway like daylight.
Very important for me. I replaced to this Dunlop rubber for its design. The MRF stock was useless in the City itself during rains. Im sure it made a lot of difference carrying all that load and passing Rothang.
First priority was to complete my Bull preparation 100%. Few Month before the ride I did a thorough Engine service and sealed every single oil leak patch.
With Engine oil replaced and some spare oil for top-up if necessary, the Bull was 99% complete.
How can my ride be complete without a Mobile & GPS charger.
With the bull 100% prepared, the only thing left was to go for a test ride. We accomplished that ride which was posted H E R E
I got so many tips and help from various travel forums, thanking each one of them with words isn't sufficient. I planned my route and let the team know exactly what I planned and why it was done so. We came across so many road blocks which almost cut our trip entirely, but every-time that happened, it seemed like nothing could stop our ride.
Most importantly, I took manual print out of maps especially the ones posted on BCMTouring. The detailed maps was so precise that after Delhi we did not use our GPS at all. We relied on maps, old school is always gold. We knew exactly where we were all the way.
Then we had to get our personal gear. Budget was really limited.
I always hated to wear this thing, which I find it hard to pronounce even today. Lets call it my Eagle mask. I had to use this when it was very cold in the entire Manali ~ Leh stretch.
Served me well. If you have more shillings, do go for a very good foreign brand. The downside of this helmet we at high speeds the airflow could deafen you.
However I recommend you get a helmet which has a dual visor just like this one. Some stretch where the road had white sand, you could go blind.
2 pair of gloves, this one was for the cold. I want to try Rjays next time. Hear it has better resistance from the cold.
And this old friend I used it when the temperature was bearable. Ofcourse, depending on your budget, go for a very nice glove which has better protection.
And how could I have completed this journey without my Gum boots. If you are doing Manali ~ Leh stretch, you will definitely need one of these. The downside of carrying this all the way is that these Gum boots are super heavy. So I donated it to a Gardner in LEH
. If you are only doing Leh ~ Srinagar route, you would not need this. I did not find the necessity. Keeps you safe from water streams, cold and a lot of dirt/dust etc. You can save the lower part of your jeans with these gum boots. This is a winner!!
Ofcourse, for Poli, she loved these. You would not believe how feather light these gloves are. Seriously..
. When you travel, you want the lightest gear that you can carry with you.
We carried about 4 to 5 pairs of woolen socks. Don't think about wearing these in hot plains. You can get them in any Army canteen.
This is part of my personal gear box. Tested to break at 250Kgs. I wish I had a chance to test them myself. However I haven't. So I kept these for emergency. Used some portion of this rope to tie the bags down.
These multi purpose steel wires, you could use for hunting, fishing or tie up any broken metal parts of your bike, in-case of a crash. Or just use your imagination and use it for anything that suites the purpose.
Very helpful in Camps at Sarchu. At nights when generators are turned off, you are all lights out. Take a glow stick and snap then shake it. It lit up your tent all night. Very helpful for people who hate to sleep in dark rooms, like me. Or again use your imagination and use it anywhere anytime. It can float on water, so go deep diving with it if you gave the balls
Yeah, we got the cheap ones, I hear you. However it worth all the money you pay. It works for one bad crash. Then you can throw it away.
The rain coats, to keep you dry. Each one of us got what we liked. I liked the coat, Poli and the rest wanted the 2 piece ones.
We got saddle bags, which solved the problem of tying up bags on the bike. And we still had extra luggage.
If you have a pillion, this works very well. And if you have the shillings, go for the more expensive variety that supports all the way up your spine. I strongly recommend a fully geared ride. Helmets, gloves, Armour protection, that is what I am going to get next. There is not point risking your life when our arms and legs don't grow back. This back rest helped Poli a lot as pillion.
With my ride and partner fully geared, the only thing left was to learn some basic machine work. Im not going to write about what you need to carry and what not. Some of our brothers here on xBHP have done an excellent job in narrating that part. I learned it from then. But I will tell you what I took with me. We carried a whole spare part set, hammer, cutting pliers, Air pumps, puncture repair patch, glue and iron pliers. We learned how to fix a puncture, replace air filter, oil, oil filter, clutch cables and clean/replace spark plugs, Calibrate idle speed.
1 week before the trip we brought all medications required for the trip especially the Volini cream which was very helpful in the initial few days when I had cramps on my back. On advise of an old man who came to me like a blessing, at the medical shop he saw me buying Volini spray. He just said, you put the cream on before you sleep and wake up next morning, forget about muscle cramps for a week. Spray are for sportsmen who need fast healing and a shot for that moment.
Diamox: Man, that thing I tell you I took 2 of those with so much fear and stopped it. What waste of money. These tablets are also expensive. The only thing that happened to me after I took after Manali was that I had to stop many times to answer nature's call. After Sarchu, I just followed what my friend at the camp told me. Take a good dose of sugar/honey with Ginger and lime/lemon. Mix it with a tang of hot tea leaf and forget about any sickness you might have.
Certainly this is not a substitution for AMS, you still have to follow the thumb rule of climbing slowly. Ride high, sleep low.
With this I conclude my post on our Incredible ride to Ladakh. Do post your questions and I will sure be glad to answer your question. I am humbled by your response, and if you loved my travelogue, please vote your feelings.
Peace! We Rock!

I wanted to add this point to Novice riders. My total long haul riding experience before the Leh trip is close to Zero. When I went for this trip, the only thing I carried with me was passion and love for mother nature. All those cock and bull stories of do not go to Leh if you have not ridden far is just rubbish. Do it if you have the will to do it, and prepare yourself, be patient and do not compromise on safety. Read others experience and learn. Most important, learn to adapt and always have a plan B. Everything else will be just fine.

Dear Xbhpians,
In my constant effort to update this blog I have updated a link. Its a public album of over 1000 Pics. The Album could not hold any more pictures, so I picked the best of the lot. My Travelogue speaks only few parts of the entire story. Maybe the remaining pictures will throw some light to some questions you have in your mind. I hope you enjoyed reading my experience and as I said, I owe all my success riding to xBHP. You folks are awesome.
Im gathering a small crew to ride my next ride to LEH again in 2014. I plan to start from Delhi and cover as much places around LEH possible. This time I also want to raise awareness of safe riding. Between today and 2014 I may just go places in random. I also want to dedicate this ride to my friends who had a fatal crash enroute LEH few months ago along with me. Since then they have recovered and with spirits still flying high, we want to make a difference. I want the world to know that amongst all the chaos we live in, we can still appreciate beautiful mother Earth.
With this post I declare my travelogue complete
See ya'll very soon...Motorcycle Trip log - Summer ride to N. Sagar | Leh 2012 - A story told in pictures | Winter in Darjeeling 2018 | Summer in Goa 2018 |
