  • [Photo Feature]: Exploring Bisle: An Adventure like no other..

    How it all started

We were just back from the long 5 day tour to the Lost World and we actually were thinking of taking some weeks of good rest, concentrate on the office work and some luxurious weekends in Bengaluru. But alas, the "rider bug" kept on biting until we finally decided that lets have a different experience this time No seas, but rain forests and hill stations. So over the weekend, we 3 sat (me, Vinay and Dinesh) together and initially came up with this plan:

But, something was not right. It seemed pretty much straight forward with no such adventure per say. And above all, it looked like a boring trip. Me and Dinesh starting putting out head down again on the map, looking for other alternative options that can be covered in 2 days. After another 30-45 minutes of discussion and heated arguments, the map boiled down to this:

That is more like it. We 2 happy (me and Dinesh), Vinay a bit less happy (not comfortable with this fact that it is going to be a tiresome journey ) but we decided to publish this plan and see how many wants to join the 3 of us.

Within two days, 3 more persons showed interest in joining us for this ride (one of them wanted to join as a pillion though as his bike was not serviced and it was a short notice). Coming to the riders who took part in this journey:

    1. Vinay : Steed : RE Desert Storm 500
    2. Dinesh : Steed: RE Bullet Electra 350
    3. Vikas : Steed: Yamaha R15
    4. Sunil : Steed: Honda Stunner
    5. Gaurav : Pillion
    6. Me, Suvrajit : Steed : Bajaj Avenger 180

Right. So everything being set and the days nearing, we were all sooper excited, again! . Less we knew what the luck had for us and less that we knew that this journey was going to be a painful (literally, painful) as well as the best adventure for all of us till date.

I hereby present before you some of the teaser pictures. The full log would be updated soon.

Day One, Location: Silk Board, Bengaluru. Meeting Point 1

The time was set to be 04:00 AM to kick start our ride. I was the first person to reach the meeting point and was waiting for the other join in. Shortly, Vikas and Gaurav (pillion) and Sunil joined in, sharp at 04:00 AM. That was a good start, seeing that people were really punctual (i guess because people were excited that is why they did not want to get late..). Anyways, we continued our way to NICE Road, towards our second meeting point. We had already made calls to the other two persons who were supposed to join us at the second meeting point and they seems to be on time as well.

Day One, Location: Tumkur-NICE Road Junction. Meeting Point 2

We had set the time to be 04:30 AM for the meeting point 2 and we all made it on time. Reached there and we saw that the other two riders (i.e. Vinay and Dinesh) are waiting for us. Since everyone was there, we took a quick picture, the mark of our start

People wanted to have some tea so we thought we would be having the tea at the Mangalore-Bangalore Highway junction where there were some good tea stalls. So we made our move towards Neelamangala. Gaurav being the pillion, took over the job of clicking pictures though (le me happy because finally I was able to concentrate on my riding ). Anyways, jokes apart, it was actually a cold early morning with clear skies and the breath of fresh air was just awesome.

Day One, Location: Neelamangala-Mangalore-Bangalore Highway Junction, Tea Stall

We took the left for the Mangalore-Bangalore Highway and pulled over to one of the tea stalls out there. People were carving for some hot tea before we can start our ride full fledged. I took over the camera from Gaurav and used this time to click some shots. I was not in need for tea though.

After the quick tea, we started our first leg of the journey. Destination Hassan. It was just a smooth straight highway and everyone of us wanted to enjoy the ride to the core. However, we came as a group here and hence none of us wanted to show off and everyone was riding together. And this gave Gaurav to click some beautiful pictures

We were actually stopping at multiple places (although short breaks) just to click some pictures, such mesmerizing was the highway, with the early morning sun glowing at our back.

Day One: Location: Hassan, Gorur Deviation

We finally reached Hassan and asked some locals about the deviation for the Gorur reservoir. We heard about a submerged church near the reservoir and hence inquired for the same as well. Confirming the locations, we headed our way towards the church first. The road was now a slim one, not well maintained, and lined up with greenery on both its sides. This was a countryside road and this is what we expected

Our next stop was Shettihalli, the place where the submerged church was.

                  ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

Day One, Location: Shettihalli, Rosary Church

As we were nearing Shettihalli, we were getting glimpses of the majestic Hemavathi River. Suddenly the river emerged from the backdrop of the trees and it appeared in front of us, boasting off its majestically width and calmness. After riding down for another 1 KM, we found a small mud deviation to our left, going directly towards the river. We took and turn and was spellbound by the beauty of the submerged church. The next 1 hour was us posing in front of the church, sometimes near the near, clicking videos, sharing jokes, pulling legs, a perfect fun time. Some of the pictures from this place are shared below

Mesmerized by the breathtaking panorama, we continued our way towards the Gorur Dam.

                  Day One, Location: Gorur Dam

From outside, this dam looked more or less like any normal dam. However, the best part was that the security guard allowed us to stay at this place for at a maximum time of 15 minutes. So we decided to quickly take some snaps and enjoy this place off the camera. That is when we realized how serene this place was. Calm blue water everywhere, cool breeze, who would want to stay only for 15 minutes? Anyways, here are few snaps of this place

We left from this place and it was already 11:30 AM and some of us realized that we did not even have our breakfast . So hence we went for the option of having an early brunch to quench our hunger to a hotel nearby. So far so good. We had to start our journey now towards a place named Shanivarasanthe from where the Western Ghats start, moreover, the Bisle Ghats start. We had no clue what the day had in bag for us and we all were having more or less excitement about this leg because the locals had already warned us at the hotel to avoid the Bisle Ghat during this time as because the road is very bad and it is advisable not to go. That sounded more fun to us though

The next leg to be updated soon..Stay tuned..

Day One, Location: Bisle Ghat, The Adventure Begins.

We completed our lunch and continued our journey towards Shanivarasanthe, the foothills of Western Ghats. As we were approaching Shanivarasanthe, sky was becoming cloudy and the humidity was increasing. Shortly, within few minutes, it started drizzling. We initially thought that this is just temporary, so lets continue our ride past the rains. However, the further we went, the harder the rain was. We took a shelter in the town of Shanivarasanthe. Asking few of the locals, we got to know the bad news. Till yesterday, the weather was all dry, but the forecast was of rains for this weekend in the entire Western Ghats region. Wait a min..FORECAST!! That reminded me with a blaze that in the middle of all the planning business, we completely forgot to check the weather forecast . None of us any rain gear and most importantly, since we planned for only a weekend ride, we did not have much of spare clothes with us ! Oh Crap! And this had to happen with us! The locals, again, advised us not to go ahead with the journey because it is all raining up the hills and there is literally no roads, the Bisle Ghat is all gone, road-wise. Couple of group members gave me that look "bro, whats the plan? ". I looked at Vinay and his look said it all. I yelled.."Lets go..this is an adventure..and lets do it! ". We looked at our steeds and they were drenched as well!

So, as soon as the rain god calmed down a bit, we started off from the place. Our destination was Subramanya and the time was 03:00 PM already and we had to cover some 60 odd KMs. This 60KMS took 5 hours for us. There were literally no roads, once we entered Bisle ghat, we were surrounded by thick fog(two of us were blessed by Osram Night Breakers though) and it was raining heavily, continuously throughout our journey. At some part of the so-called-roads, we saw streams flowing through making it difficult for any normal vehicle to pass through. We indeed wanted to capture these roads in camera, however, we had more important thing going on in our mind. The fact that there was no sign of any life around us, and since it was pitch dark and rainy, we wanted to finish this road as soon as possible. However, we indeed succeeded in capturing few pictures for our viewers here. Here are the pictures from the Bisle ghat. Although I would like to say that these pictures does not even show 50% of the experience we had. You need to have first hand experience to understand what I meant here and no camera can capture that.

Exhausted, with our back burning, hurting and our body almost out of energy, we reached Subramanya around 08:00 PM. We took the last pictures of the day once we finished the Bisle ghat leg.

In Subramanya, it did not take much time for us to look for a nice lodge/residency and we ended up in a decent one for 500/- per room. Our main concern was to dry up our clothes at the earliest so that we can wear them for the next day's journey. We entered the room, put the fan on full speed and crashed on the bed having a heavy, nice dinner.

Tomorrow was going to be another excitement day, athough I was pretty much sure, it was not going to be as thrilling as today because the locals mentioned that Shiradi ghat is far better than Bisle ghat so you can easily cross it.

The roads from sakleshpur till about 12kms prior to upinangady are horrible, even non existent at places, after that it's butter smooth.

If your hometown is towards udupi or close by you could also try taking the kudremukh/karkala/moodbele route .... its pure bliss to ride/drive there, had taken this route just two weeks back. AFAIK the road is still in the same condition
