• A ride to an undiscovered Heaven - Chanshal Pass

Well, it all started off in the month of July when I checked the company Holiday list.. Was quite happy on seeing the 4 days holiday up in October.. So I decided to make a plan with my friends in office aka biker pals..

We were not sure if the plan would be successful.. there were so many reasons of which Money was the most important criterion.. I spent so much money for my marriage shopping that I was in debt because of the Credit Card which I swiped.. never the less, we decided we will somehow arrange the money and make a plan.

I got my bike serviced on the 13th of September 2014.. Got the clutch plates changed and the tappet door O ring changed spending almost 2300/-

We planned to hit Aut and then go to Great Himalayan National Park.. We thought we can do some trekking and pitch tent to spend 2 nights over there and hit back home..

on the 19th of September 2014, my friend resigned and the plan was going for a toss due to some pressure in office.. we were told that we will have to go for an interview with the client on the 4th of October 2014..

Somehow we managed to convince the Manager to push the interview to the week after the holidays and the planning started again..

on the 20th September 2014, my friend called me and said his bike is screwed.. heavy white smoke coming from the silencer of his RTR 180.. We took it to the Service center thinking we will just have to change the Cylinder kit and piston as we didn't have money we wished they won't charge too much.. Hoping for the same, we requested the Service manager to open the engine and asked for the estimation. we were with the mechanic when he was opening the engine and to our bad luck everything was messed up.. The Crank Shaft had a huge play.. the bearings of the Cam Shaft was nearly dead.. the piston had too much of carbon deposits and the walls of the cylinder was scratched and they gave us an estimate of a freaking 14,000/-

I checked my bank account and I had some 6,000/- my friend who resigned didn't have any money so he contributed 1,000/- and we needed another 7,000/- I had a SBI Debit card my dad gave me 5 years back for filling up fuel when i was searching for job here in Delhi.. i had some money in that account.. I immediately checked and found it had some 8,000/- in it.. so I said go ahead with fixing the bike.. we asked them to do it ASAP as we didn't have much time to complete the running in..

we got a call from the Service Center guys on the 22nd of September that they are still getting the job done and it will be ready by tomorrow. we waited for the next day and when we called, they are closed... we got frustrated to the core.. We had to wait for the 24th to get the bike from their hands.. nevertheless, we were happy that we were able to get the bike fixed for the ride.. we paid 12280 in total after discounts on spare parts and labor..

the next day, I just wanted to check the engine oil level and found that it was below the maximum level.. I remember it was above normal level when I got it serviced..

I immediately posted query here in ZMR ownership thread on the same as there was no smoke visible but I could smell the oil from the exhaust..

Meanwhile I took the bike to the Service Center to find out what the problem could be as I didn't want this plan to get spoiled.. They came to check the bike and they revved the engine a little and then red lined with WOT for few seconds and the white smoke was visible.. They threw a grenade at my face saying the piston and cylinder needs to be replaced.. and it will cost me a minimum of 7,000/-

I immediately called up sibun and psr sir to find out what the issue could be.. they asked me to check few things and get back to them. I told them what the service center guys said and they suggested I could ride for another 4000 to 6000 kms if I use 20W40 grade oil..

I was heart broken thinking how this could have happened. many things running in my mind, could it have been because of the frequent oil changes I did.. as in different brands and grades of oil.. could it have been because of the performance Air filter which I used for some 5000 kms when the engine was still new..

meanwhile, I found Sukhi and Hoodibaba sir planning a ride to Chanshal Pass and I decided to find the route for the same.. Told my friend manojmsoni to make the plan and find the proper routes.. that is when our plan was confirmed that we are going to hit Chanshal Pass and pitch our tent there over the night..

I was riding the bike at very slow speeds for the next one week.. Got myself a Gulf 20W40 on the 27th of September 2014.. Got the oil change on the 28th Sept 2014 and the bike water washed on the 30th..

I packed up everything needed on the 30th of September night.. prepared a check list and checked it against the packing done.. The big day was coming up

Re: A ride to an undiscovered Heaven - Chanshal Pass

Ok, on the 30th of Sept, Got information from Rahul Leo from xBhp and hoodibaba sir on how safe it is to pitch a tent in the Pass.. They were so sure it would be safe.. also inquired about the network availability. Was told BSNL network works but intermittent signals.

Then I remembered that we carry smart phones and we all know how smart these so called smart phones are. they have a very poor battery life and we needed power-banks. though I have powerbank, it wasn't working.. So I asked Manoj about buying power banks or fitting chargers in our motorcycles.. he said we will fit chargers and it will not cost us more than 100 for 2 bikes.. I requested him to get it done and we left home for the day after completing our tasks.

We informed our manager that we will be leaving early the next day as we have planned a bike ride over the long weekend. He asked us to take a leave but we denied saying we are waiting for our salaries and only then we can leave

after reaching, I made sure I send a mail to my pals Amresh and Manoj asking them to pack up whatever is essential. Requested them to pack up blankets, sweaters and jackets as we are going to ascend upto 13,000 feet. Oh yes, the last time, they forgot to bring their toothbrush so I added it to the mail

1st of Oct 2014 - The Big Day
(not only because of the trip but because we get our salaries which is the major criterion for the ride)

it was 5:15 AM and the alarm was on.. I woke up, hit the gym and came back home..

A pic of my Black Pearl just before I left from Gym..

Took some rest and left to office with all my luggage.. Picked up the riding jacket, my LS2 helmet and my gloves.. reached office and was waiting for Manoj to show up.. He showed up at around 9:15 Am and I could see the Big smile on his face..

Well, I asked manoj for the charger which he was suppose to bring, he said I forgot and besides I don't have money.. I was like &)*@#^$*(#Q&)$.

he said it isn't going to take too long, we will make it in 10 minutes, we just have to go the spare parts store and buy the inner of cigarette lighter and few wires..

so the time was 12 PM and Manoj asked me if we can go get the chargers done.. I agreed and we went out taking the lunch break.. we went near my house and got the cigarette lighter.. we got 2, one for his bike and one for my bike.. we spent 100 rs for the pair. we got some wire from the shop keeper and we tried to make the charger.

it was too hot.. nothing was running in our minds except going for the ride

Manoj made a mistake.. he connected the wire to the battery first and then tried to connect the wire to the charger unit.. meanwhile, the metal parts inside got misplaced and when he connected the wire, the wire got burnt and it burnt his finger.. this frightened me but he assured me he is alright.

Then we realized that the two metal parts came into contact with each other which caused the short circuit..

we packed up and left to office. On the way, he suggested we get alligator pinch clips and use it to connect to the positive terminal and the negative terminal can be connected to the body of the bike for earthing.. we searched for it and in vain we couldn't find it anywhere near my house.. so we decided to get it on our way..

I called up Amresh after we reached office and asked him if he is ready.. meanwhile, manoj decided we will stay back in yamuna nagar. I was confused and told Amresh we will go through meerut road..

the clocked ticked fast and soon it was 3:00 PM.. manoj (my TL) dropped a mail to our manager saying we are leaving for the day and we got the immediate approval. I put on my riding jacket, picked up my gloves, knee guards and my luggage along with my tent.. Manoj had brought his tent as well.. with huge smiles on our face, we went to the parking.. this is where I messed up.. i had 2 backpacks and 1 tent. I tied up the tent to the side and I could have easily tied up my backpacks to the rear seat, instead I tied one to the rear seat and the other I was wearing to my chest.. though it was comfortable

it took us almost 30 minutes to pack up and we moved.

So we called up Amresh and informed him that we are leaving and asked him to come near Manoj house as Manoj had some work to do nearby his house.. also we needed to fill fuel and Amresh said we will use CC to fill up fuel.. by the time we met, it was already 5 PM.. we filled up the tank near Dilshad Garden and got the Pollution certificates for the 3 bikes..

Re: A ride to an undiscovered Heaven - Chanshal Pass

We met at around 4:50 PM.. we got our tanks filled and the pollution certificates ready.. We prayed for few minutes and we started our journey..

Our Destination for today was well, I don't really know because we never had a plan.. we were suppose to reach Yamuna Nagar. But the road I suggested was Meerut road.. Manoj was wondering why we are going via Meerut to Yamuna Nagar

We decided to ride as far as upto Dehradun as we already hit Meerut highway.

we took our first break at Meerut.. We were stuck in so much of traffic on our way that Amresh got exhausted.. he is riding after almost an year as he was forced to drive car by him mom.. We had some snacks and meanwhile, Manoj wanted to get the charger fixed on his bike. so he pulled out the seat and side panel of his RTR180 and started messing around with the wires. he finished his little DIY and asked me to get the car charger which I had.

he used the zip tie to hold the charger intact.. we checked to see if the mobile phone is getting charged and viola.. it worked.. Then we tested to see if the air compressor which Amresh brought works and viola.. it worked perfectly fine.. so we had the snacks which we ordered and had a small talk about the ride..

In some time we left the place and started riding again. The roads were fantastic. Though we could have done mid 80s on the highways, Amresh decided not to go beyond 60 kmph as the oncoming vehicles had highbeam turned on and it was hitting him directly. I was using tinted visor on my LS2 so I wasn't affected much.

Amresh again fell tired and wanted to take yet another small break.. We thought we can finish off our dinner at this dhaba.. I wasn't hungry, hence I just asked for some Maaza.. Meanwhile, on seeing us a guy started a conversation about bikes and trips.. seemed he had booked a RE thunderbird 500 and he was asking about the bike.. we gave him the pros and cons.. Manoj started praising ZMR to him and explained about ZMR to him.. That guy was surprised to hear ZMR doing 5200 kms in 5 days.. I didn't initiate Manoj did but of course, it is a true fact.. ZMR is above all

after the discussion, we decided to move ahead.. This time Amresh was saying he wanted to have a good night sleep so lets go as far as we can and when we feel tired, we will halt at a decent hotel.. we agreed as we didn't want anything to go wrong..

the roads for the next 60 kms was simply perfect and after we crossed total of 120 kms.. after 120 kms from Delhi, the roads were a horror to ride on.. two way traffic with diversions here and there.. roads filled with dumb-asses behind the wheels of the huge buses and trucks.. in-between the roads were worse that we couldn't go beyond 40 kmph..

We managed to reach Roorkee by 9 PM.. Amresh said he was tired and wanted to make a halt at Roorkee.. so he started looking out for Hotels to stay in.. till now, we have completed 170 kms from New Delhi.. we found a decent looking hotel.. Manoj went on to check on the rooms availability and came out saying 1000/- for a double bed and he said 3 people will easily fit in the bed, but we decided to ask for an extra bed.. we took a halt and Manoj ordered some drink while me and Amresh order for Coffee and Tea..

We unpacked and went to the room. I wanted to get the charger fixed in my bike so I insisted Manoj on helping me with it.. he said we will get it done..

The next 1 hour had all the garbage talks possible.. Girls, incidents, life, family, orphan kids, adopted kids blah blah blah and so on.. so finally we decided to go down and get the charger fixed on my Black Pearl..

The moment we went down, Manoj got a call from his wife and he was busy for almost 20 mins.. I turned to look at Amresh and that idiot too was on call for 10 minutes.. I was blank looking at my half naked Black Pearl had manoj given me the charger, I would have tried to do the DIY myself but he didn't..

after 20 minutes, we started with the work and got the charger fitted on my bike as well.. Now it was time to test if it works.

A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith and use up a lot of fuel....

First of all, they dont allow you to ride to Rohtang Pass whenever you like.. they allow one way traffic only at particular timings.. i guess in the morning and then closed in the afternoon for oncoming traffic.. this is what i heard when i checked up with a colleague who is from Kullu..

Better check up with those who have done many times.. DK sir would be the perfect person to contact..

I dont think i can join buddy. Money is a huge problem and then convincing my parents for another ride is even worse.. even if they agree to let me ride.. my Black Pearl isnt in its perfect shape..

And naaah. My fiance will not stop me from riding ever and she knows how much i Love touring on Bikes so for sure i will ride after marriage and she will join me for rides with my friends and their better halves..

Edit.. It isn't possible to make it to Manali in 11 hrs unless you don't take breaks at all and the roads are properly laid.. nevertheless.. all the best we made it from Great Himalayan National Park to New Delhi in 15 hrs with too much of break..

We will plan out for a ride one day. I dont think my pals will join due to some personal choices..

I have a friend who is dying to go for a ride as well..

No there is no restriction of timings for Rohtang. Just you have to get a permission either from SDM Office, Manali ( SDM office, Manali (No. 01902254100) or at Gulaba (on the way to Rohtang) which is few kms. from Manali. SDM office functions during normal office hours whereas at Gulaba you can get permit any time of the day (24 hours). You just have to fill a simple one page form giving details of yourself and your bike. Do carry some I.D. proof and a valid licence and RCs, PUC, Insurance Policy etc. and they would charge Rs.50 per biker. and hand over the receipt in few minutes. That is just that simple.

You might get traffic jam after Marhi (half way to Rohtang) due to heavy tourist traffic vehicles, but you can criss cross your way through the taxies, cars, bus, petrol tankers.

BTW it is snowing at Rohtang these days and may continue for few more days.

You can stay at Ride Inn in Manali managed by Mr. Godwin of Pune (No.08894539495) as I have got very positive response from bikers who had availed his hospitality and would also be able to get latest updates about Rohtang and beyond from him.
