      Pre Ride Preparation

      Pre Ride Preparation

      1. Bike
Ever since I bought a Ninja, I wanted to take it for Ladakh ride. MG, Praful and several other guys strictly advised me against doing so. So my hunt for a bike started. The most serious challenge was that whichever bike I borrowed for the ride, I would need to give my Ninja to that guy for the duration. Several candidates propped up in my mind but finally my childhood friend won the contest hands down because I knew that he would be too scared to take my bike out on the road. Since he had a FZ, I finalized on taking a FZ to Leh.

      2. Off Roading Experience

      3. Endurance

      4. Luggage

Then I decided to keep quite about my plans and not to leak anything to paaji. In the mean time niks_devil asked me whether I wanted to borrow his saddle and tank bags. I jumped on the offer and took delivery of the luggage immediately. Niks must have thought I had gone mad to collect bags so early but I was afraid that paaji will claim this luggage also. The Rohit asked me whether I would like to borrow his sack + bungee cord and Ankit asked me whether I would like to borrow his gloves. I picked up all this material well in advance and then only informed the group about my progress.

      5. Clothes

      6. Maps, Geographical Info etc.

Ah ha! I know most of this
Waiting for the unknown bits... !

and PS: You were the most 'prepared' riders of them all for this!
Yours was like a planned execution, and the mumbai guys were executing things and planning later... like you said last time... its not about who was right or who was wrong, but fact remains that both the troops did it in thier style and in thier best interest!

                          Bike Preparation
I acquired bike from my friend around 10 days before starting the journey. Got it thoroughly serviced, changed clutch plates (since they were only 600 bucks), engine oil etc. Also bought a new air filter, clutch cable, brake and clutch levers, spark plug. I would strongly recommend NOT purchasing air filter and spark plug. If those items are not to the mark, get them changed in your home town.

I was also on the lookout for a replacement tyre for the FZ. FZ stock tire is radial tubeless. Chances of punctures due to stones is extremely high in Ladakh ride so searched everywhere for a replacement tyre. Rishabh, being a FZ owner also pitched in but no one had it in stock. Ultimately found one Eurogrip tyre which would fit the stock rim but since it was larger in size, I had to remove rear tyre hugger.

Spent around 3 hours in Yamaha showroom getting acquainted about bike parts and carrying out minor repairs.

                          Final Preparation
As I knew only Inder from the proposed group, I was after him constantly to have a joint meeting of Mumbai-Pune groups. I personally feel that personal interaction with your group is crucial since you will be spending 15-20 days with this group and you have to understand group dynamics & mentality to fit in. Alankar even made a trip to pune with Satyen to check his hot weather endurance. We met at roopali for a short period.

                          Sponsorship
Since certain members had pointed out about their funds crunch, I talked with a company in providing partial sponsorship of 20k for the group. I got their banners printed and carried them to Leh. Alankar even mailed the sponsorship proposal to the company. However, since the Mumbai group never met us, I abandoned the idea of sponsorship money.

                          Last minute Screwup
Since I did not know any of the Mumbai gang personally, Inder was co-ordinating with them and couple of days before departure, there was a massive confusion about our meeting town and days. Ultimately, it was decided to meet either in Delhi or Srinagar.

                              Day 1 : 31 May 2010
My staff had already booked my bike. All luggage was packed and my family dropped me at railway station. Had booked in 2 tier AC so was most comfortable for some time. After some time, I became aware about some strange noise in our compartment. On further investigation, found out that there was a honeymoon couple in our compartment…… There goes my sleep for next 24 hours.

In my natural style, had a catered lunch in Bhusawal and ordered Burger, chips and cold coffee in Bhopal for dinner. Photo of my lunch – (the hairy parts you see are my legs and not part of the lunch)

Aman called me from delhi asking for final plan for the ride. Told him to speak with Inder since network was poor in train. More about this later….
