Normally I sleep for 8 hours, an hour for taking care of bodily functions and some minutes for office work. Rest all time is dedicated to updating this thread. Looking at no comments at our Srinagar day, I decided to give it a small break.

          Srinagar to Drass

          Day 5 : 4 June 2010 - Srinagar to Drass

Disclaimer : The following account is to be taken lightly and no offense is intended. Any resemblance with living or non living person/non person of human or non human origin should be strictly considered unintended.

Finally we started towards Sonmarg and cold rain started hitting us. After going like this for 20 minutes, I observed that we all were ill-prepared for the rains and stopped on side of the road for a hasty discussion with Inder & Rudra. I was the most prepared wearing full rain suit but had not worn any plastic bag in the shoes. Also rain was getting in from the air vents of my riding gloves. Going ahead in the condition we were was not an option.

Disclaimer : The following images are graphical representation of the events. Any resemblance with living or non living person/non person of human or non human origin should be strictly considered unintended.

Later, we stopped at a small village pharmacy/ medical store and bought surgical gloves so at least the hands would remain dry. Later stopped at a village called Ganderbal. Here, Inder & Rudra bought new rainsuit pants. All this while worry about luggage being taken ahead by Pandit family was heavy on my mind. So we rode hard till Sonmarg to see their car just coming to stop. Later, we found out that they had stopped for one complete hour for us to give us time to catch up.

We had late breakfast at Sonmarg and as usual spent quite a lot more time than necessary. Ultimately, by 12.30, we were again ready to go ahead.

Immediately after Sonmarg, you are on the way to the mighty Zozila. The road in the beginning was good and this was the first time when I was riding a bike on a ghat section without any retaining walls.

The view was fantastic and I stopped for couple of photographs.

Inder & Rudra rode ahead. After 4-5 km of good roads, the roads suddenly disappeared and I could only see slush and mud where the road was supposed to be.

I got stuck behind a truck which was unable to climb and no way to overtake him. Met with some software guys from various states. They had rented bikes from Delhi and riding to Leh. Couple of them fell in the first two hairpin bends but rest were extremely competent. One guy was Partho. He was previously in Pune in Tech Mahindra.

It was constantly raining and I was getting colder by the minute. Inder & Rudra found open road and went on. This was the first time I was riding in snow and was very cautious and slow. This is the Zozila war memorial and the road (if you can find it)

Here military police stopped me to enquire about the traffic condition behind and also got my name etc. in a register. Told them about a truck blocking complete road around a km back. Then a surprise was those guys asking whether I wanted some tea, snacks etc. Later I found out that this courtesy is the same in most of military camps enroute.

Drass is the second most coldest inhabited place in the WORLD. The temperatue in winter reaches -60 degrees Celcius.

Inder had the job of finding accommodation in drass. When he told me about the availability of rooms at J & K tourism bunglow, I told him to book the costliest room. It was Rs.200/room so we booked two and dried out. Here were three young female from Europe riding their bicycles in room next to Inder.

We all slept with all available clothes put on determined to reach Leh on the next day.

Ps. We got our luggage back from Pandit family since they wanted to ride on till Kargil.

We spent the night in the JnK tourism bunglow as well. If you book in advance, you get the rooms they reserve for govt. officers. we got one of those for rs 400 (It is Rs 300, but since we were 3, he charged 100 more). Huge room, all carpeted, geysor in the bathroom.

                Tips for the Leh Tourer:
                Buy Rain Pants in Delhi.
Book room in Drass for 2 days.. 3 days in advance... (As it is its cheap to just book a room, The staying part is expensive.)
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Our rooms were quite big, carpeted and with geysor in the bathroom. Only challenge was the water and electric connection to the geyser was non existent.

Then looks like for 200 more, the water and electricity was diverted to ours
