. In high altitude, the air is less dense so the fuel-air ratio set in the carburetor does not receive sufficient oxygen. I knew about this situation and had checked with Yamaha about what to do at high altitudes. However, the changes in the settings suggested by them did not. A local mechanic sorted it out next day. How ??? You will read in next day's log.
did he put in a wire or something into the carb jets??? or did he simply plug the main jet??? or changed the jet itself?????Suffering from Parked Motorcycle Syndrome

I am not holding a grudge against inder. In fact, we rode back together and still meet at G2Gs. I have stated just what I thought at that time. Throughtout the log, I intend to remain faithful with the circumstances as they happened. No spicing up or watering down. Only true events.Originally posted by rachitkohli View PostIt happens yar..! Aman, it's ok.Originally posted by aman_pulsating View PostInder please abide by your post.
Yes, we certainly left you behind on the first day. If you insist on riding at 50-60 kmph on a straight 6 lane highway with no traffic, I doubt that any one would be happy to ride at that speed.Originally posted by inder.cool View Post^ Ya, i know it is true..but you guys left me so many times and zoomed ahead..!! You will also have to admit that we both used to stop for you every instance. At no point of time, we left you behind. Please remember kargil when we waited for you for more than 1.5 hours. I can quote at least 10 spots where we both waited for you to arrive.
Did I ever shrink from my responsibility towards the group?

Day 8 : 7 June 2010 – Pangong Tso to Leh
In the morning, got up at 5.15 and were ready by 6. We wanted to complete photo session at the lake and run back to Leh as early as possible.

See the clarity of water –

In the morning, sun was shining right across the lake so we were quite limited where we can aim cameras. Still captured some of the beauty and started back.
Encountered some rough roads near Pagal Nallah. Now that the bridge has been built on nallah, it is no longer a deterrent.

Just after pagal nallah, we encounted sand on the road and…… we fell down. Rear wheel got stuck in the sand and bike came to standstill. Paaji also got bogged down.

Today, it was sunny as usual and I was holding the camera in hand ready to shoot anything. Most of the shots have been taken while rudra was riding. Actually, the beauty of Ladakh is such that you don’t really need to see where you are aiming and what photo you are clicking. A blind person can also take good photographs in Ladakh. Some more random photographs --

Enroute had breakfast at Dothguling restaurant, tangste. Amir khan and crew had stayed at this hotel during shooting of 3 idiots. They have a beautiful traditional dining room.

Here, we found Yak for the first time. So had to stop and shoot –

…. No, YAK is not on the red bike but in the background. And now one close up ..

Paaji was seriously contemplating sending his bike back to Leh by a tempo from tangste but couldn’t find one. We both told him that if he was afraid of riding in snow, I could ride his bike and he could ride pillion with rudra. We also found frost and snow on roadsides but the road was absolutely clear.

We could actually see Tangste village even from a distance of 20 km.

Finally we reached check point just before Chang La

Here again I asked paaji whether he wanted me to ride his bike. He gallantly said No, I will manage. We rode on and found the road like –
View from check point -

First turn --

Subsequent road till top -

Finally reached top. Heard later on that Paaji had got stuck in snow and my friend, who was following had helped him push out his bike. Since I did not ride my bike to the top, I did not feel it proper to take my photograph at the top so just the top photos.

Chang La to Karu road –

Got down till 15000 ft ht. Met with the army mechanic there. Luckily, the tempo owner had delivered my bike and the mechanic fearing for its safety had tied it with a huge chain to an army truck. All the way back from pangong, I was on phone with Yamaha to sort out altitude problem of FZ. Again did all the changes suggested by them.
By the time, I could make necessary adjustments, my friend Himanshu reached army post in innova. Rudra as expected volunteered to stay at the army post but the surprise package was paaji who also consented to remain present till I went up again to take a trial of bike. My logic was to take a trial of the bike when I was on high altitude itself. The bike was behaving normal at any height lower than 15000 ft so tried to reach top once again.
I could reach only 500 meters beyond the 17000 ft ht board. Again the bike was revving but not moving forward at all. So finally I had to abandon the idea of riding to Chang La Top and came back in an extremely dejected mood
Reached back to Leh without any incident. I was extremely determined to climb to Khardung La top on my bike and not as a pillion.
In the mean time I had received a sms from satyen saying that Aman from Mumbai had reached leh and was trying to contact us. After tangste, there is no mobile coverage at all so he was unable to know where we actually were. He used that day to complete Leh local sightseeing.
Later, he came down to our hotel. I met him for the first time. Earlier, we had talked on phone but not met. He was waiting for Mumbai gang to reach leh so he could get permit.
Bike Remedy:
I had read in a forum about inserting an electric wire inside the main jet. The logic behind this is to reduce the fuel flow from the jet. This makes fuel mixture leaner but since the available air is lesser in quantity, the fuel-air ratio works out fine.
Made enquiries with local contacts and went to a garage owner – Juma Malik. This is the worst organized garage I have ever seen. This garage is located on main airport road around 500 mtr. From post office. You will find loads of bullets standing outside. His technician did not find the required allen key to open up carburetor. So had to buy an allen key set for him. (It’s another point that I got it back from him) The mechanic there was extremely knowledgeable and did work in around 15 minutes time. He also tore off some fins of air filter to increase air flow. I asked him again and again whether my bike will be able to climb Khardung La. He was extremely confident so left the garage after threatening him with bodily harm in case the bike gives problem.
By this time, paaji had finalized his own plans for Khardung La ride. He declared that he will not accompany us on the ride to Hunder/diskit. When asked, he said that he didn’t want to climb Khardung La twice. (You have to pass Khardung La to reach Hunder/diskit and while returning, obviously you need to climb it again.) Me & Rudra tried to persuade him for a long long time to at least try it. We even proposed to help him out in case he requires any help. However, he had made up his mind.
Later, me & rudra went with Aman to see whether we can procure a permit for him late in the evening. In spite of trying, we could not get it. I hit upon an idea. Inder had permit but had decided not to cross Khardung La in any scenario and Aman wanted to come to Hunder but did not have permit. So I suggested that Aman can ride with me and rudra as Inder. Inder will collect Aman’s permit on the next day and then move towards Khardung La Top. Since Inders’ ride time would be lesser, leaving later would also be ok with him. Surprisingly, both agreed to it.
Later, we saw gloves bought by Aman and wanted to buy them for ourselves. On the way, met Mumbai gang on road. It seems they were trying to reach Aman during the day but were unable to reach him. Since we were getting late, me and rudra left Aman with Mumbai gang. Went on towards the shop. Purchases the worst gloves over. Brand Name – Minus 20 degrees. My gloves tore on the first day itself.
Me, Aman & Rudra agreed on the next days’ departure time and ended the day.Last edited by trustvishwas; 06-26-2010, 10:34 AM.Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience.
