Could have asked me. I would have smsed it to you. We only required Dimox, Combiflan and Xplod. We actually required sunscreen but stupidly did not use it.

The exhaustive pointers in one of your last posts are pretty 'exhaustive'. You had apparently done lots of pre-ride homework and have ended up imbuing more than that from the actual ride experience. Great stuff. Ride on...

Yes. I believe in as much homework as possible. A. You do it in your spare time and B. You reduce chances of headache and heartache during your ride.

Good Information there Vishwas, I'm sure many travelers will benefit from all this information.

              • Its really great of you that your taking your time out and preparing such exhaustive pointers, which I am sure will be useful to many headed that direction.

                Appreciative. Should be made sticky.

                    • @Vishwasji - How did Rudra's RE cope up? Just wanted to understand the difficulties, if any, on using the old non-FI vehicles. Any issues, other than intake, related to spark plugs etc?

I may sound a little cynical but perhaps you should just post a disclaimer with the list of medicines to let people know that they should consult their physician before use. Just in case.

He did not have any problem riding wise with his bike other than starting trouble every morning.

His bike consumed total 3 ltr. engine oil through out the ride. If put up on main stand, it used to leak like an open tap. On side stands, it was better. Could not get the nut out even in authorised service centre. The battery got dead in Srinagar and could not buy any suitable battery.

I was also using a non-FI bike. But bullet did not seem to suffer any altitude sickness at all. He didn't need to do anything other than filling up oil every morning and kicking it for around 50 times.

A short note on altitude sickness for bikes coming up.

                            • Altitude Sickness for Bikes

Here is some information about altitude sickness for bikes.

As you start climbing, air starts thinning and the carburetor is unable to feed proper ratio of oxygen and fuel to the engine. The first symptom you observe is bike hiccupping at higher revs and refusing to rev above a certain level.

While riding from Srinagar to Leh, you will have to cross Namik La and Fotu La or Hamboting La. All are above 10,000 ft ht. During this ride itself, you will observe loss of power. However, no need to worry. You can easily ride till Leh.

What you need to do is use a leaner fuel-air mixture. In normal riding, using leaner mixture leads to excess heating of bike. In Leh, please go to a garage and do one of the following:

                              1. Install smaller size jets. - They reduce quantity of fuel coming through and help in achieving better fuel-air mixture.
                              2. Open up your carburetor, check the main throttle body setting. Ideally it would be set at middle position. Change this to the higher / top position.
                              3. Open up your carburetor, take out main jet, insert some strands of electric wire in it (to make the fuel opening smaller in size thereby reducing fuel flow) and close it. The mechanic will also try to tear off some layers of air filter but it is not required and ruins a good air filter. If you wish, you can get the air filter removed for rides to Khardung La, Chang La etc. and then get it fitted again after you are through with high altitude riding.

My bike (FZ) was revving only till 6k. Till 15,000 ft. altitude, it was ok but immediately after crossing 17,000 ft mark, it stopped moving forward. The engine used to turn over, rev till 6k but once I start to release clutch, it bogged down. I tried riding with half clutch, dumping clutch etc. but bike refused to move ahead even by one metre.

                              • Vishwas, when your bike stopped moving, did you try and remove the air filter and then see how it performs. I am sorry if you have mentioned it in your log, I have poor memory
