Getting lehd solo this may - june ...
Hi all...
Have been going through the xbhp blogs for a couple of months now. And now i am planning a solo ride from Kathmandu - Srinager through Leh-Ladhakh on a Yamaha RXG. I Am planning to do a leisurely ride taking about 4-6 weeks to do the whole trip. Am planning to take the bike on a train from kerala to gorakhpur and start the ride from there. Hopefully explore nepal for a couple of weeks and then move on northwards.
So far the route planned is Kathmandu-Lucknow-nainital-rishikesh-dehradun-shimla-manali-leh-kargil-srinagar and hopefully some other places on the way. And i have some doubts that can hopefully be cleared by the gurus here.
1) What are the main requirements for the ride into nepal?(permits, charges, documents required, original or copy of the bike docs etc....)
2) Am planning to start riding from kathmandu by may last week and ride into manali by 1st week of june. Will the passes to leh be open by then?
3) Is the condition of the road going to be good at that time of the year?
4) I know people have been riding there for over 20 years on yamahas and yezdis and bullets...But is there anything else that needs to be done on the yamaha other than the regular Leh-Ladakh preparation that i read in a couple of other blogs?(Like foglamps etc)
5) Any other places on the way that can be included...
6) Looking for Suggestions and advice...
Thankyou
Vinod

Re: Getting Leh'ed - 2014 Planner
Hey guys,
Planning to do leh-ladakh in the 2nd week of June. Main purpose to see more snow with landscape also I've 16 days for this trip and I dont want to cover all the places
Particular places I want to visit is Spiti valley, Leh, Khardungla, Nubra valley and Pangong Lake these are the places will spend more time. So here is my route-map that I'm planning to follow.
Delhi-Rampur: Stay overnight
Rampur-Spiti valley: Full one day rest
Spiti valley-Manali: one day to get all permits and nxt day leave early morning for leh
Manali-leh: Full one day rest
Leh-Nubra valley: Again One day rest
Nubra Valley-Pangong Lake: One day hault
From Pangong to come back Manali and follow the route towards Delhi.
So let me know 14days will be enough for this (excluding 2 days of flight from Bangalore) Can I add something into that or I've to skip some places in that list.
Your inputs will be highly appreciated. Total Kilometers will be 3000

Am now looking at 20+2 days for this trip instead of the earlier 15+2, should be sufficient isn't it?
Thanks so much guys!

I stayed at Pang during my Ladakh ride.. Pang has many tents which charge you around 150 rupees a night... However, if you plan to stay at Pang, please note that Pang is at a height of 15200, and some people complain about symptoms of AMS.. But if you take the necessary precautions, (drinking loads of water, the simplest one) I don't think there would be any problems..
My Manali - Leh was broken down as follows:
1. Manali - Rohtang - Keylong - Darcha - Patsio (Patsio is a army transit camp just some 15 km from Darcha. You can stay at Keylong or Darcha depending on how much time it takes to cross Rohtang)
2. Patsio - (stuck here for a day due to snowfall, hope you guys don't)
3. Patsio - Baralach la - Sarchu - Gata loops - Lachulung la - Pang
4. Pang - Taglang la - Leh
20+2 should make things much more easier..
All the best..
Cheers,
Pranav

Its a huge place starting from the beautiful Patni-top to the Lush Sonmarg, Pehelgam & Jhelum River to the pristine Rangdum, Padum to prodigious Lamayuru to desolate Turtuk,Panamik to breathtaking Hanle, Chumur, Chusul to precipitous Mersimek La, Photi La, Chang La to majestic Kaza, Spiti & Chandertal Lake and .... the more you explore the hunger increases and is never satisfied. I have been there twice and feel like going again and again. And all this is just North, I have not even spoken about East and NE which is largely unexplored. We, Indians are blessed with Himalayas and my appetite of hills are insatiable

Sorry for the extended dialogue-bazi, 20+2 should be enough for your plan.
Patiently search the travelogue section here and keep a watch on Bcmtouring and some threads on the other BHP forum- it has lot of contemporary info regarding Leh and its nearabouts.
For Manali-Sarchu you can stop at Keylong/Tandi - Beautiful place & has some places for stay & food & most importantly has the last petrol stop before Karu so you can fillup the next day and start.)
I did and dont be surprised if you find me somewhere thereOriginally posted by seeker View Post

[B] - had thought of taking that route but wasnt sure. Hence decided to go via manali and come back via Srinagar. Taken that. Will discuss with my partner and decide on it. [B]
2) If you do this avoid the Independence day and +/- 5 days in Kashmir. Reason -> Your safety and the security check thickens, so may be annoying for alien looking bikers with different registration plates.
[B] - am anyways planning to leave on 14th eve/ 15th from Mumbai so would be reaching either areas anyways after 4 days i think. I guess this gets taken care of that way. [B]
3) Any particular reason why you want to travel all the way from Mumbai - Leh and back and that too with time constraints.
Please understand that I am not discouraging you but you will exert yourself a lot before even touching Leh so there may be some eventualities. This is both for you and your bike. Also there is no point visiting places like a truck driver if you want to enjoy the beauty of places that you planned.
You can put your bike on Train/Gati and come on flight to Delhi/Chandigarh/Jammu/Srinagar and save at-least 3 days (+3days boarding/lodging/petrol)
[B]- ya i know, quite a few of my buddies were also telling the same but i had a long lasting dream of buying a bullet and riding on it all the way.hence want to accomplish that.
[B]
4)AFAIK I would ideally ask you to start from Sept and continue so that you get less crowd meaning more avenues to bargain and faster arrivals. Sept is the best time since the roads are usually at its best since BRO gets enough time from the years beginning but on the flip side snow is lesser (which is also a blessing if you think in other way)
[B]- i agree but my leaves wont permit that. Will still check out if i can change the leave dates. [B]
16/08/2014 Jaipur-Manali -> to much exertion as I already told but your wish ...
18/08/2014 Sarchu - Tso Kar -> Tso Kar has very limited places to Stay . I would suggest you to go to Sumdo or if possible Tso Moriri ( Korzok) but that would be too much since you would be starting from Manali just the previous day so your call... Tso Moriri in many ways is better than Tso Pangyong but the last 20-25kms has completely nothing (not even roads) and be careful to not reach Chumur ... Sumdo has local petrol too.
Next day you can come through Chumathang -> Keylong-Leh Road -> Karu
21/08/2014 Leh - Pangong Lake - Leh -> Can be done but why not stay overnight and enjoy the Lake .Cheaper stays & food in Spangmik(5-8kms from Lukung) .
[B] points taken, will be doing these changes in the plan. [B]
I fully agree ...Fully taken my friend. Basis the feedback that i have got till now on the plan. Would be making the changes accordingly. Major changes are the following:Originally posted by pranav.k View Post17/08/2014 Manali-Sarchu
Manali to Sarchu might be too much for a day considering you have to cross both Rohtang and Baralach la in a single day.. Assuming you do Jaipur-Manali stretch the previous day, starting early next morning might be difficult.. My Rohtang experience was loads of traffic, slushy bad roads.. It took us a lot of time to cross Rohtang even though we started really early in the morning.. Baralach la is beautiful and i'd recommend not to rush through it.. Baralach la also has a few water crossings which might be little tougher in the evening..
Once you start descending Rohtang, there WILL be loads of breaks for photos..
Manali-Leh route offers most of the scenic beauty of the entire ride.. Take as much time as possible for this part, you won't regret..
All the best for you ride..

seeker : Km wise they might look easy, but add some more factors to it, like average speed of max 40kmph, crossing nallas would add more time, then u need to stop for directions/water/food/butt break/clicking. So plan accordingly.

Yup. Will do that. Still need to make the laundry list of things to be carried. Will include rain gear.:thumbup:Originally posted by rreneav1987 View PostJust to let you know. August will have rain. so make sure you carry all the necessary equipment for rain
Have thought of stretching a bit in between areas as a little short of days for the entire trip. Have kept in mind a buffer of 2 days for now..if leave permits will reschedule these days. But is it like it just can't be done?Originally posted by nadz11.ns View PostAbout the two bold dates, wouldn't they be long to be covered in a single day ?

Jaipur-Manali as i said above, will be trying to stretch..shall pull over somewher in between if it becomes too much. But about the leh one's, dont they seem alright. They dont seem to be that far km wise..Originally posted by prateek2210 View PostSrinagar to Chandigarh can still be done, but I have doubts about these dates.
I know am squeezing the days but I dont want to shelve the trip because of lack of days. May be i will skip one or two places here and there but in a nutshell i have with me 15+2 days for now. Going via Delhi is an option but i dont want to do that till the time this plan more or less seems doable. What say?
Thanks a lot guys and please keep the tips coming.
