  • Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India

    Route taken: Bangalore-Magadi-Nagamangala-Mysore-K.R.Nagara-Arkalgud-Sakleshpur-Magudi-Koppa-Thirthalli-Nagara-Sagar-Sirsi-Dandeli-Dharwad-Chitradurga-Bangalore.

Bangalore-Tavarekere-Magadi-Huliyurdurga-Koudle-Devalapura-Nagamangala-Chinya-Pandavapura-KRS-Mysore : Traffic is very irritating till Tavarekere and eases out post that. Roads are narrow and conditions are fine overall. The route becomes scenic post Magadi. Around chinya, road work is underway, so might be a bit of discomfort. Once you cross Pandavapura and head towards KRS, convoy of tippers and trucks with construction material greet you. Road conditions are average towards Mysore.

Mysore-Bilikere-KR Nagara-Bherya-Saligrama-Ramanathapura-Arkalgud-Gorur-Shettihalli Church-Magge-Bhallupet-Sakleshpur-Hanbal: Roads are intermitently good, average and bad. Definitely not a fast stretch, has good sections of winding roads.

Sakleshpur-Mudigere-Kottigehara-Magundi-Balehonnur-Melpal-Koppa-Thirthalli-Kimmane-Karimane-Sampekatte-Sagar: Except for the bad stretch between Nagara and Kimmane, all other roads are in good condition.Ferry operates 7AM to 6.30PM.

    Sagar-Thalaguppa-Siddapur-Sirsi-Yellapur-Dandeli:
    Good two lane roads overall.

Dandeli-Haliyal-Nigadi-Dharwad-Chitradurga-Bangalore : Good two lane roads till Hubli. Post Hubli its GQ roads. Hubli to chitradurga has undulations at many stretches. Chitradurga to Bangalore good roads

Hi Shyam, did Kottayam to Goa in Feb. As rider 11 said , Mangalore to Goa is a breeze. Mangalore to Udupi is four laned, thereafter the road widening work starts and is almost continuous till short of Karwar. But the traffic is less and road is still broad enough.
The tarmac quality of Mangalore Kasargod to my shock is Excellent. Probably just been done up. No more is there that broken stretch of potholes . its great.

Bangalore-Mysore-Hunsur : Average to good roads.

          Hunsur-Gonikoppa-Bittangala :
Good two lane twisties. Can be a bumpy at some sections if driving.

          Bittangala-Iritty:
Overall good roads. You can expect few rough patches and odd potholes though. May have to wait at the bridge if traffic is more.

          Iritty-Mattanur-Irukkur:
          Average bumpy roads.

          Irukkur-Mayyil-Parassinkadavu:
Narrow roads. Road conditions are about average. Mixture of good and bad roads. Bad roads mainly after the deviation from Irukkur. Can
be irritating if driving. After mayyil it is like a puzzle to figure out the roads, mainly at night.

          Muzhapilangad-Thalassery-Vadakara
: Town after town after Town, feels like passing through city traffic. Good roads though.

          Vadakkara-Thodanur-Muyiproth-Perambra:
Narrow roads, with a mixture of good, bad and ugly roads. Hardly any direction signs on this route. Can be a bit confusing, need to go through on instincts Hardly any decent food/Fuel stops in this route except for Vadakara and Perambra .

          Perambra-Koottalida-Balusserry-Thamarassery-Kalpetta:
Good roads overall. But traffic prone, mainly the ghat sections.
Good roads throughout except for a small patch from Forest checkpost and Gundlupet which is under construction. Needless to say Forest stretch is closed from 9PM to 6AM. A total of 26 road humps greet you from the border to forest exit.

          Gundlupet-Mysore
: Road widening is completed and centerline marked but the rest of the route, progress seems to be very slow. Hopefully it is completed before the first rains.

          • Solo bike ride from Hyderabad To Goa

            Hi all,

This is my first post here since I joined yesterday wanted to share my ride experience with all of you.

Last month I did solo Hyderabad to Goa ride.

            Route I took. :-

            hyderabad - mehbubnagar - raichur - bagalkot - belagavi - panjim (~680 km) approx.

Started my journey @ 2:00 AM from mehdipatnam to bengalore exit it was quiet a good road. till mahbubnagar its on the same route so you can easily maintain high speeds.

After mahbubnagar - raichur there are some potholes once I went into the pothole because I was going on and from opposite side a truck came with high beam on and I was unable to see on the road, overall road is good. its two lane road.

from raichur - bagalkot road is decent you can go high speed but there are 2-4 speed breakers before and after each village. and you won't be able to see if driving during night overall good two lane road. One incident though on this route, after dawn I was going at around 80-90 and there were two dogs fighting, suddenly one came on road and I was lucky to evade that, so beware of dogs and other animals during day time.

bagalkot - belagavi( belgaum ) same 140 km stretch with two lane road.

belagavi - panjim : this is where fun starts the starting of western ghats and awesome view is beyond words, also thrill of cornering those hairpin turns will give you hell lot of adrenaline rush.

this is my first post hope you liked it will update more info very soon.

Shiradi Ghat is going from bad to worse pretty quickly. Drove back yesterday afternoon and the non-concrete parts have developed huge potholes.

                Better to take alternative routes.

Drove up and down Shiradi Ghat this weekend. Asphalt part is patched up and is now in motorable condition for most part. The last six kilometres while going to Gundya from Saklespur is very bad.

                  Concrete section remains solid.

                    Hi All,

I am riding from Bangalore to Chikodi (85km from Belgaum) tomorrow. I am familiar with this route as I have ridden 5 times in the last 3 years. Just wanted to know about road conditions and if any diversions to be taken due to road repair work etc. if any of you have traveled this stretch (Bangalore to Nipani) recently.
It's the journey that matters, not the destination.

Completed Bangalore - Chikodi - Bangalore ride yesterday by NH4. Roads are in good condition as always. As pointed out by Phanikar sir previously, there are undulations between Haveri and Hubli. New tarmac has been laid out for about 30-40km around Chitradurga.

KA route updates. Did a 9 day ride about 3 weeks back over the August 15th long weekend covering approximately 2000 Kms around KA, most of it is the commonly used routes so I'm posting only general updates, if you need specifics just let me know.

                        Day 1 - Bangalore - Mysore - Hunsur - Gonikoppal - Virajpet - Napoklu

                        Day 2 - Napoklu - Madikeri - Somwarpet - Shanivarsanthe - Kodilpet - Manjarabad Fort - Sakleshpur - Arehally - Belur - Chikmagalur

Day 3 - Chikmagalur - Balehonnur - Magundi - Kalasa - Kudremukh - Karkala - Hebri - Halady - Vandse - Jadkal - Mudoor ---> I encountered a traffic jam inside Kudremukh as I turned towards Sringeri, turned around and headed to Karkala instead. Roads around Hebri and Halady are slightly broken, need to be tackled with care. The turn off to Jadkal-Mudoor is easy to miss.

                        Day 4 - Mudoor - Jadkal - Vandse - Kundapur

Day 5 - Kundapur - Maravanthe - Murudeshwar - Gokarna - Kudle Beach ---> Slightly heavy truck traffic in spots and due to the 4 laning at many places the road switches from the one side to the other. Plus there are sudden potholes on smooth stretches of tarmac, typical of how this road has always been. Reaching Kudle beach was complete downhill off road slush, managed fine on my bike. But some low GC cars may run into trouble.

Day 6 - Kudle Beach - Gokarna - Karwar - Sadashivgad(KA) - Hankon - Anshi National Park - Joida - Sangave ---> Has to be one of most beautiful and isolated roads in KA. Inside Anshi I probably saw not more than 7-8 vehicles. Poor to no mobile network connectivity in a lot of the patches, no BSNL, Airtel or Vodaphone.

Day 7 - Sangave - Dandeli - Haliyal - Nigadi - Dharwad - Hubli - Gadag - Koppal - Hospet ---> Dandeli to Nigadi is partially concrete and very bumpy, the tarmac stretches in between are quite bad in patches and one needs to be quite careful. It was a little difficult getting onto AH47/NH48, ended up taking a really long route inside Dharwad to get onto the highway. Lost a good 30 minutes just to get onto the GQ. Did not want to take the internal route to Hubli as I assumed it would have had plenty of traffic

                        Day 8 - Hospet - Hampi - Hospet

Day 9 - Hospet - Bellary bypass - Challakere - Hiriyur - Tumkur - Bangalore ---> Hospet to Bellary bypass is over all good, but there are too many unmarked speed breakers which maybe difficult to spot at night. The roads around the JSW plant are a bit rough and will take you through the township. Bellary bypass is mostly empty with intersections with huge speed breakers, most low GC cars will scrape if not taken with care. The stretch from Bellary bypass to Hiriyur is quite windy so especially bikes which get impacted with cross winds need to be careful. This stretch too has its fare share of speed breakers here are there, barely any places to stop for a break so folks going with family better be prepared to cover this stretch without nature calls.

Phew that was a long one !!

Planning a ride to Kodaikanal from Pune around end Oct. We plan to make a night halt on the first day at Tumkur. I wanted to know as to what will be the quickest route to cross Bangalore and what is the road condition like post Krishnagiri once we leave AH43 and head for Dindigul? We plan to begin from Tumkur at 6am and want to avoid the legendary heavy traffic in Bangalore. Also, how long should we budget approximately to reach kodaikanal from Tumkur?
