We plan to begin from Tumkur at 6am and want to avoid the legendary heavy traffic in Bangalore. Also, how long should we budget approximately to reach kodaikanal from Tumkur?
Instead of Tumkur, would suggest you take a halt at Hosur. you have more options by the highway than Tumkur. Road conditions are good to Very good from Bangalore to Kodai. Ghat section, small patches you might face some potholes, Apart from that its smooth.

Once you cross the Flyover on Dindugal By pass get off the Highway and take service road. Take the second right(Theni Route) to Bathalagund. The first right also take you Kodaikanal via Palani, but that road is bad(rather was 6 months back) . From hosur , even a relaxed ride can take you to Kodai in 7-8 hours.

Thanks for your reply but to make Hosur from Pune might be a bit of a stretch for us on the first day and we definitely do not want to encounter the traffic in Bangalore which is why we thought Tumkur should be ideal for an overnight halt. Any suggestion on which route to take from Tumkur to Hosur? We plan to begin from Tumkur at 6am so that traffic can be avoided in Bangalore

Tumkur - Nelamangala - Nice ring road upto electronic city - Hosur would be the best bet to avoid Bangalore city traffic I guess. For nice road you would have to pay toll of ₹.60 for 30kms.
It's the journey that matters, not the destination.

Thanks a lot. We would gladly pay the toll as long as we save the hassle of traffic and get a smooth road

              HI, my biker friend.

I have confirmed my ride to OOTY.

              PUNE-Mysuru-OOTY.

I am specially concered abot the Mysurur-OOty route.

First of all, do you know on which route the 36 hair pin bend falls?

Also, heard about some tension due to kaveri River issue. Anything to worry about.

Also, When passing through the BAndipur tiger reserve, any change of encountering a tiger?( I mean I certainly dont want to)

              Warm Regards,

              ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

Planned tour to Ooty from Pune via Mysuru.

              Specially concerned about the following:

              1) Anything to worry about regarding KAveri River issue

              2) Chances of meeting a tiger in Bandipur reserve(Dont want to meet one at all..BTW )

              3) Where is this 36 hair pin exactly? Reference on map will be appreciable to avoid confusion.

              Warmest of all regards.

                1) Right now no tension about kaveri river matter. Since your from Pune I'm assuming your number plate would be of MH, so even if your mid way and any issues arises again you need not worry. Only if you have KA or TN number plate you have to think twice.

                2) I don't think tigers roam on highway. So many vehicles commute. Never heard of such things.

                3) No idea sirji.

Nothing to Worry about it. Except for few kms outside Mysore where there is road widening is underway(Diversions exist), rest of it is a sail.

                  Its on Gundlupet-Bandipur-Masinagudi-Thalaikundah-Ooty Route ( https://goo.gl/maps/kx84YD4WauL2 )

Nothing to worry about now. its calm for now.

Been riding through that stretch regularly for over a decade, only once have I spotted a Tiger, Thrice a leopard "on the Road" so do the math. The chances are very much there but very faint. Consider yourself very lucky if you happen to spot them. But the chances are very high of spotting an elephant, on the road, which is worse than any big cat. Do not panic/honk/Lights, you would be inviting trouble. Just wait for it to pass by.

                  Warm Regards,

                    Hello friends,
I just completed a trip from coimbatore to Virudhunagar (4hrs) via palladam -> Dharapuram -> Ottanchathiram -> Dindigul Bypass -> Virudhungar.

To start with the road from Coimbatore-Palladam is a two lane road extending to four lane at some places and is in good condition.

Palladam -> Ottanchathiram -> is again a 2 lane road which goes through many villages and little towns. The road are laid recently , but still only patch works at some places.

Ottanchathiram -> Dindigul . The road is in awesome condition.

Dindigul -> Virudhunagar The road is the part of the Bangalore - Kanyakumari highway and it is a driver's delight as the roads are well maintained.

The gates at bandipur operate from 6AM to 9PM , and they are pretty strict about it , but sometimes (depending on their mood) dont allow bikes post dark , say 6.30-7PM types. So if you are aroud that time at the gate , would recommend you to stay back at Gundlupet and start early the next morning , riding during the day is better in this stretch. You have quite a few places to stay around gundlupet for a decent budget.

If you happen to cross masinagudi and start the climb, just be a tad careful with the first few kms of the climb , once dark most wild animals start to venture out on the roads as traffic decreses.

Had a ride to Chikmangluru from Bengaluru this weekend via nelmangla-kunigal-hassan.
Roads were very smooth up till hassan, from hassan to Chikmangluru there were bit improper road and potholes approx a stretch of 50km.
Our ride accounted for around 700km.
                                3 bikes, 5 bikers.
                                Fz, Pulsar 180, RS 200.
It was a memorable and refreshing weekend get away.
