    my advice/rules when i ride

    1) wear helmet, even on small chores (buy milk etc). Statistically most accidents happen close to home.

    2) slow down at all intersections, enough to brake & stop immediately
if some psycho blows through. commonly autos, a lot of the rowdy-type RX/shogun riders. Resist that temptation to blast thru those blind spots

    3) don't keep changing lanes unnecessarily and weaving through traffic. you can be at most 5-10 minutes early and its not worth it

    4) never go behind buses, they stop frequently and its frustrating to wait and tempting to disobey (3)

    5) never go behind autos, they follow only brownian motion!

Not sure if my below point is mentioned in any of the post....

Main Road and Cross Road Ettiqutte
        ----------------------------------

        > The main roads are bigger and cross roads are smaller and are branches of mainroads.
        > Vehicles moving in main roads have right to go straight un-interrupted, they have right of way on main road.
        > However vehicles on main road while taking turn into cross road should slow down/stop and then enter cross roads.
        > Vehicles on cross road should compulsarily stop look out for clear road and only then enter main road/cross main road.

I have observed this ettiquttes both in US and UK, they not only slow down but completely stop at crosses/blindspots and slowly move till visiblity/road is clear.

In India, this is not followed properly, even in places like B'lore, I have seen people zipping fast in cross roads crossing main roads w/o slowing down forget about stopping !!! This ettiquette is more of common sense than black n white rule, but people seldom follow this.

Very true, I have had an accident due to this. I was on main road and had the right of way, a sand carrying lorry enters from crossroad out of nowhere and hits me on my rear wheel perpendicularly.

I had a blackout and by the time I regained my conciousness the driver had disappeard leaving the lorry behind.

Moral - cross roads are there to cross you, atleast in India .

Xenologik's diagrametical representation on page 1 is also one of the most commonly faced dangers on roads.

            Also, religiously use your indicators.

Indians hate this tiny switch the most and feels that it will wear out soon !

Tip to avoid skidding while sudden braking on wet roads

Hi all, i would like to add my experience too here. While mostly my riding is ON when it rains, i have come across a situations when i was riding on almost greasy roads.

more than a year back i got skid due to water on a sharp curve, after that i was extra cautious while riding on wet roads. Although the p200 tyres serve me well, i have got them inflated them with nitrogen that adds a bit of grip, and that really can be felt on wet roads.

Ok now about the skid avoiding TIP, this funda works like this:

If you are riding on a good 60-70kmph speed and suddenly you have to go 1 -2 peg down or apply sudden breaks 'it may happen that your bike begin to skid. Within first few microseconds, you will know that the bike is losing grip and is moving snake like,, just it does before falling on one side' you can sense that the rear tyre is losing traction.

Usually we do nothing but keep on trying to balance till we fall. But as multiple forces are acting on bike, achieving the normal state is difficult and even if we do achieve that,, we forget about the front object and go and hits on it.

TO avoid this,, as you realise the bike has lost balance(just as the snake dance is started or is going on) JUST then pull on the clutch, your bike will be free and will start again in the straight line, you can then attempt again to apply breaks or gear up to remain in balance. TILL your bike is moving like snake and is above the ground with atleast 10 kmph speed you can apply clutch to avoid a fall....

i have tried this many times. Although it came naturally to me, i now use it in emergency situations which happen alot in pune.

I am a victim of it, and lost my front two tooth because of that, and I would never forget this accident in my life.
                    One from me too..

People eating Gutka/Masala/Pan/anything similar have a seriour killer tendency to open their door in the moving vehicle and spit out watewer is in their mouth!!

Now these dumb head, red mouthed langoor with angoor (read it fools with car) dont have enuf common sense to look back watch out and then pop their door and head out.
Mostly any vehicle one/two/three/four....N wheeler coming from behind can never assume that when the idiot in front would open the door and spit and bam!! Here's another addition in ur accidental history coz ur 10th sense (located down in ur toe :-P) was unable to tell you about the popper in ur front!!

Hmmm sounds Good...but i have a doubt here...when we apply we are plugging the clutch also (correct me if im wrong) along with breaks...actually i havent tried the trick you just told so im not sure about it...but as you are an experienced guy i believe that it is 100%correct...thanks alot brother.

Thats true brother, i don't know why we Indians are always in rush, there may be two reasons:
                          1) Indians Don't like Riding/Driving
                          2) Indians are so busy that they really dont have time to show all those road sense.
i mean riding is fun, we should enjoy it instead of making it heck for our self and for the other commuters. Here in Delhi the senario is wrost, a few days back Home Minister stated that Delhi Driver should show some Driving sense as they are supposed to have some guest in few months from all over the world.

to add to this thread ill Illustrate an example which can be a FATAL one.

observe the below pictorial representation of a road

This is an example of a typically possible accident case in perfectly "legal" conditions.

The slow moving vehicles are on the left lane which is correct as per rule.
You are the faster vehicle so you are in the right lane, again correct.

now suppose an intersection comes in the road/highway , and a vehicle is going to cross the road. the slow moving vehicle on the left MAY stop for the crossing vehicle to cross the road.

howeveryou have NOT seen this vehicle which is about to cross the road since the slow moving vehicle on the left is blocking your view and thus creating a blindspot area.

If you proceed with your speed, and the slow moving vehicle gives way (that is stops/slows down) to the vehicle which wants to cross.

                            Either,

You will collide with the vehicle which is crossing the road

                            or you'll narrowly miss it-somehow.

so yes its better to slow down than overtake in such situations. let the vehicle on the left be your SHIELD(that is you remain right beside it) for the intersection and then accelerate again when the path is clear.

and this situation doesn't require a highway intersection to occur.
mostly observed in cities as well where you're overtaking a vehicle from the right in a correct manner yet someone jumps in front of you from the left in your path

also applicable to mindless jaywalking pedestrians with suicidal tendencies.

The only major accident that i had in my 15 yrs of riding bikes was due to this kind of blind spot. It does not even need a cross road for such accidents. I was overtaking a car, I was at 80kmph and the car was 40kmph. There were no cross roads and i had a high divider on my right and so i had no fear of a vehicle crossing. I have had many narrow escapes before so i was using the car as my shield by sticking close to the car. But here in india bikers need to be more careful for other things. It was a dog in the blind spot. It came running very fast and had a norrow escape from the car but i was not no lucky. This was 5 yrs back when i didnt use to wear a helmet. Half of face was wiped out. Blood inside my eye. Inside portion of the lips got rubbed on tarmac, no skin was on left cheek and nose. Half of the left eyebrow was wiped out. But, I am lucky to have no scars left on my face. I learnt my lesson and strap my helmet tightly since then.

Well I have something to say .

We can be in control and responsible of what we do.
But sadly not many are like us . I always try my best to follow road rules and human rules . But have been a victim of people 's stupidity .

3 times have been hit by people . All 3 times not my fault. May the fault was I was following rules while the others were not . That has left me with bad memories and injuries . I have suffered although it was not my fault at all.
Damn and trust me in all cases the person was not guilty , tried to run away.
One of them was like " ho gaya chal ab age badd... " .
I could not tolerate it , was just way too much to bear . So I decided to hit him in a similar manner , but just stopped and hit him very slow . May be I could not be like him and backed off at the last moments involutorily. But why I dont understand . If a person cares damn while pointing a gun at me and firing , why the hell should I think even once thinking things like ... " oh no yar , must be a family man , must be having children at home although he cares less , ... must be someone 's son , She is a woman yar ... " .

Once fell on a blind corner and went some distance... municipal workers had put rethi or mud or whatever you might call it . I just fell down even when I was riding like a turtle . They said aram kar rahe the , hatane hi walle the . I mean what can be done of such people ? .
Trust me to there left side there is a lake , I was dragged on the right..
But all were not fortunate like me , cars have fallen into lake .

One of our xbhpian has a broken backbone because of some stupid guy.
Now this is an unbeliveable loss without the person being at fault.

From the past days seeing a small accident everyday through my eyes.
People were laughing at the site and saying , mar usko mar. I was kinda shocked man ... an RTO standing beside did not care coz one was a taxi driver and one a govt bus driver . I thought what the hell man , these people are encouraging the guys to actually kill each other.
Humanity goes for a toss .

And there are many examples out there which If we all sat down and wrote will cover more posts than any other thread on xbhp.

I know by being a good biker or a human being , I would avoid the loss that would have occurred if I was one of these rash riders or careless pityless people . I dont say I am some saint or someone 100 % noble but do have some sense.
But not sure whether will remain the same always . There may be some limit . Hope I dont reach to that extent.
