Yes that is what i am feeling at the moment. The day when i changed i felt the bike to be more quick.

Will shift to 300V 10-40 next time.

I read somewhere that Kerosene could also be harmful for the rubber rings. I use turpentine oil for all my cleaning purposes, which i guess is almost similar to Kerosene (at least by smell).

So WD-40 can be used say once in 3-4 months especially during monsoons.

Kerosene(paraffin) is rubber o-ring safe , it is the cleaning solvent recommended by people who manufacturer your bike's chains ... Rolon , Diamond etc etc . They also specifically ask not to use anything else since a thiner solvent may actually penetrate the sealing rings and remove, dilute or contaminate the factory sealed grease lubricant inside o-ring chains . If your chain is non o-ring type like mine , use whatever is handy .
You can surely use WD40 or turp as a cleaning & de-greasing solvent(on non o-ring chains only), but for the money it won't work a zilch better than kero and toothbrush, I have tried it . Kerosene is an excellent grease, oil sticky dirt etc cutting solvent , isn't much oily itself , inert to painted surfaces, stays put as long as it is needed and evaporates(dries up) slowly afterwards and is cheap(subsidised by Indian govt). It is also one of the safest to use because of high flash-point and no health hazard on little skin exposure for a short time or minor vapour inhalation .

          • Hi,

I am looking for an engine oil for my duke. The recommended grade is 20W50 and Motul 7100 FS is what the svc pours in at the first service(1000 kms). I have clocked 500 km till now and would like to change to a mineral oil of the same grade. few queries :

            1) I don't know what Bajaj puts in the factory, but I guess it's DTSI oil. I am looking for a mineral 20W50 preferably from Motul.I have decided on mineral because have heard and read that it helps in sealing the rings and proper wearing of cylinder walls initially.
Is this grade in Motul available here in Mumbai or at all? If not then any other good brand?

            2) My strategy is to stick with mineral for 1500-2000kms, then change to SS and later at around 4000-5000 kms to FS. Is this strategy good or an overkill?.
KTM svc is using Motul 7100 FS(20W50) right from first service. So I think if the manufacturer thinks that FS is ok at first service then certainly the engine design permits it and that I shut my mind off and blindly follow the manual?
What would you guys suggest? any comments from the ustaads here?

            3) I have to check the manual if it says so, but does using a different oil grade(Not brand) run the risk of voiding the warranty?

            • 1) Motul 3000 4T plus 15w50 .
              2) This is the preferable method . Unless KTM specifically prohibits you from using a mineral oil or says that the same may harm your engine in some way(read the manual), you can do it .No problem .
              3) Few manufacturers do this and they shall say so in the manual if it is so . You have the manual, I don't .

Its OK to go with the FS from 1st service but I would suggest you change the oil a couple of times to mineral before you go to the FS at 1k. That way any metal debris will be removed.

You don't have to stick to the 20W-50 compulsorily. You can also go with 15W-50 or a thinner grade in winter as 20W-50 is too thick for winter. You will notice better acceleration with a little thinner oil.

I have done a lot of R&D with different oils and their grades in my gixxer and speak from experience.

Thanks Bladerunner. I have purchased Motul 3100 T. Will try to get the oil changed soon. Gotta take it to the svc or try to do it myself. What will I need to measure the exact quantity needed(1.4 Lts) ?

Yes, put the recommended amount. There's always some oil up in the engine. If you're a DIY guy you can do it or take it to the probiking guys.

                    • Going for a long trip of about 700kms up and down. My bike is unicorn and i am in a confusion of choosing engine oil.
                      I only have 3 options:

                      1.Castrol activ
                      2. Gulf pride 20w40
                      3. Honda 20w40

I already like gulf but never used honda....shall i try it??

out of these three only gulf I'd recommend and ditch the two left. You dont have to even think about castrol & Honda oils unless they re-engineer them.
There are better oils available from other brands too.
And keep checking oil level every 500kms, atleast.

thanks bro....i poured yamalube 20w40 today.....is it good?? shall i use yamalube or gulf? will it be enough for the trip? acceleration felt improved with thumping engine instead of Gulf's quite engine and little bit lazy acceleration.

Yamalube is another great oil. You might notice slightly better mileage then gulf. Good enough for the trip but all engines consume some amount of oil, specially on summers (more on high speed long runs) that's why [I'm saying it again ] keep an eye on oil level.
According to me yamalube & motul (same oil but with slightly different additive package) tops the chart of best mineral oils. And closely followed by valvoline champ & gulf (only downside of valvoline champ is it doesn't go black even after 2k kms of running, though performs great and gulf is (feels) thicker than most 20w40, it also performs great once got upto operating temperature.)

Don't worry Shahriar bhai ,you got the perfect oil to run long distances in this summer heat. The thumping is more pronounced because of better compression with this oil since it's 20w40 and causing better ring seal. Acceleration may feel a bit sluggish at cold start, but in a few kms riding it becomes perfect. It also feels less revvy because of lesser engine noise. Actual differences are much less. Which oil were you running just before this and what grade ?
