Re: Engine Oils
10w is a benefit where cold-starting temperatures are much lower (5-10C) , and therefore a thinner oil will do a better job of getting around the engine when it's cold. When at running temperature there will be no difference, as both oils in question are w50 and therefore the same viscosity when at running temp. Moreover i haven't heard of 10W50 oils . Closest i found was 15W50 OR 10W40.Originally posted by nadz11.ns View Postas our rider have been specified with an oil grades of 20w40-20w50.. what would be the consequences of using 10w50 grade oils ? would there be any negative impact on the engine ??

like i am jaipur and mostly the temps are on the higher side, so i should use oils of higher grade.. Right ??

Use 15W-40 / 15W-50 / 20W-40 grading oils. Since, being in hot temperature zone, this oil will help you out.Originally posted by nadz11.ns View PostI checked the website of castrol for its racing one oil.. That one was 10w50..

Also, there are many duplicates of Castrol oils in the market. If you get a hand on reliable source, then it is well and good or else you might end up with duplicate Castrol oil. Go for other brand like Motul, BPCL, Gulf, Veedol. These are also good oils.

I am using this castrol racing 4t 10w50. Did a trip of 140kms in a 45C hot yesterday on my unicorn and there was not even a hint of sluggishness or overheating feeling.Originally posted by nadz11.ns View PostI checked the website of castrol for its racing one oil.. That one was 10w50..

Re: Engine Oils
Another oil mixing query....
Here is a short description on the situation
Bike - p200ns
current odo - 1640kms
1st service - 200kms (changed to bajaj oil 20W50)
2nd service - 910kms(changed by self to motul3000 15w50)
3rd service will be done after 2-3 weeks from now (please dont laugh at small service intervals and odo readings...)
Now i am a follower of this thread and have read almost all the posts but still am a bit confused
i dont want to change to bajaj oil for my 3rd service i'll convince svc not to change somehow
i have 800ml of motul3000 15w50 with me
Now i have read that these new bikes with higher compression ratio and tighter tolerance and blah blah come factory filled with SS oil or FS oil (its funny all bajaj oils come with their world renowned dtsi 10000 SS oil)
also many claim the motul3000 mineral is better than bajaj SS oil
So back to my query...since i have read on this forum too and at many places these bikes are better of with SS oil than mineral
now i plan to change oil on my own so what is a better option? buy another bottle of motul3000 and use a complete 1.2 litres of motul 3000
or is it safe to buy motul 3100 SS(20W50....afaik it isnt available in 15w50 grade here) and mix it with motul 3000 mineral(15W50) ?
so to summarize which is a better option?
1. motul 3000 (1.2litres)
2.motul 3000(800ml) + motul 3100(400ml)
3.motul 3000(200ml) + motul 3100(1 litre)
do not want to go with higher SS oils like 5100 asmy riding is sedate normal and the distance covered doesnt justify the costly oil used
Now next part of query:
after the service within a day or 2 i am going on a vacation out of country for 1 month
what would be better? to change oil and then go or come back from vacation and change oil?
i'll have to do the 3rd free service before going out of country because i might loose the service if i do it after i come back and warranty might get void tooPulsar 200NS parts list

I myself own the 200NS and have used the Bajaj / Motul 3000 15W50 / Motul 5100 15W50. So following are my replies to your queries
a. do not mix grades. so since you already have Motul 3000 15W50. you have two options either get another litre of Motul 3000 or get the 5100 15W50. Since your engine is barely ridden i suggest stick with the 3000. it is a good oil.
b. if are going to get your bike serviced before vacation and you somehow manage to convince the SVC guys for not changing the oil then i suggest you do the oil change after the vacations because then you will be riding it often. its better than changing the oil and leaving it for a 1 month unsed, serves no purpose and might start getting deteriorated.
My 2cents.

Re: Engine Oils
Well, it is upto us whether to tell the SVC guys to change the oil or not. In no case this will affect the warranty. But, if you yourself are lazy in changing the oil regularly, it will be wise enough for you to get it changed at the SVC. Also, they will surely insist on getting the Bajaj oil. They make a bomb money from that.Originally posted by mayank.travadi View PostAnother oil mixing query....

Also, your ride is relatively new. The drain period for mineral oil is less as compared to SS & FS oils. Also, since your running is on the lesser side, how often do you change the oil?
Since you are going on a long vacation, get the servicing done and the ideal thing would be to change the oil ASAP once you are back. Drain the old oil completely and fill it fully with fresh new chaka chak oil.

why do u not recommend mixing engine oils? their grades are almost the same isnt it?
devils_friend
the manual clearly mentions that failing to change oil to bajaj oil will result in lapse of warranty
and no i am not lazy...infact i want to change the oil myself using tools and DIY stuff
okay i'll change oil after coming back from the vacation...
after vacation oil will be about 5 months old...and i might need the bike immediately...wouldnt it be fine if i change oil after a day or 2?Pulsar 200NS parts list

Re: Engine Oils
mixing different brands and different grades are two different things. I hope you meant the latter. You can mix similar grade oil say 15W50 of Motul 3000 with 15W50 of Motul 5100 that does not make any difference and since the manufacturer here is same the production process for both oils should be same. Mixing of 15W50 grade oil with a 20W50 grade is what is not recommended. I dont know the details or the actual funda behind it but the only thing i can think of now is the thickness of both these grades are different, hence they might now mix well.Originally posted by mayank.travadi View Post@sunilyo

when you say change oil after a day or 2 you mean after come back from vacations or after the service. I recommend after you come back from vacation.

after the vacation...
I have a flight which arrives early morning and within an hour or 2 i got to go to college on the very same day so is it fine if i extend the oil change by a day or 2?
yes waiting for expert opinions from the above mentioned ppl...
well i dont think the20w50 and 15w50 are very different in thickness...they might be at very cold temp but i'll wait for others to reply too...
if 3100 or 5100 is available in 15w50...then i think i can go ahead with mixing...right?
PS: Thinking can we fool bajaj SVC ppl by sourcing an empty bottle of dtsi oil and filling it with oil of our own choice and telling them i want to use bajaj oil which i bought myself... :P
the svc here doesnt allow any other oil and threatens of warranty lapse on using any other oil...Last edited by mayank.travadi; 05-24-2013, 03:50 PM.Pulsar 200NS parts list

Re: Engine Oils
Delaying the oil change a couple of days even a week after the vacations is not going to harm the engine in any way. Dont know in Mumbai but here in Delhi the i dont DTSi oil being sold in pet bottles unlike Hero svc. Here they have big containers of engine oil and the mechanic takes out a measured number of literes from these containers.Originally posted by mayank.travadi View Postafter the vacation...

Re: Engine Oils
To put it simple, you definitely can go ahead and mix 3100 or 3000 with the ratio you have 800 ML. Now I'm not gonna delve deeper as to why you can do that, you've quoted ".since i have read on this forum too and at many places these bikes are better of with SS oil than mineral" you should know what's the big deal.Originally posted by mayank.travadi View PostAnother oil mixing query....

3000 isn't that different from 3100. You can definitely go ahead and mix the 800 ML with 500 odd ML of 3100.
To your third query, if you plan on to keep the bike for a month or two, I'd suggest you to change the oil once you come back, because it isn't gonna degrade as such but it's always wise to get it changed as fresh lot when you come back, as I've suggested quite a while back and backed up by Pinaki and Muzz.
Definitely a wise idea to change after you come back.
Cheers!
