Never use any other grade oil until bike crosses 6 k. Tide water oil co is the famous brand known as veedol lubricants. And they are the best engine oil manufacturers in india. ?
i have to try IDEMITSU HONDA 10W30
VEEDOL 10W30
MOTUL 10W30
any other suggestion in same grade would be welcomed
on a serious note m planning on long trip to lonawala from mumbai which is roughly a 100 kms which oil is suggested to be used ? (asking because engine would get very hot on continuous driving)

Re: Engine Oils
Hi Everyone.. I am a newbee here. I dont know how to create a new topic and this is my first post but anyways I have a query.
I understand that 20w40 means that W means winter and 20 is the weight of oil. I cold places the first number is reduced so that the weight of oil is lesser as in 10w40. What I need to know is; why cant there be a universal kind of oil.. What difference does these ratings mean.
Thanks.

Even in ratings there are specifications. Like API SL , SM , SN etc.Originally posted by Liveforpower View PostHi Everyone.. I am a newbee here. I dont know how to create a new topic and this is my first post but anyways I have a query.

Different manufacturers test different oils and recommends suitable oils. There can be one grade for a region. A truck posted in kargil will also have a 15w40 oil and a truck in jaisalmer will also have the same oil.
Car oils are very different as they are made considering exhaust gases and pollutants. Here we cant have same liberty. But still nowadays 5w30 oils are mostly used in petrol cars.

Re: Engine Oils
Always use bike specific oil, which in your case is SAE 20W50. Using 20W40 may lead to " not-so-optimum" heat transfer characteristics for your pulsar >Originally posted by srikany View PostHappened to ride a Pulsar 150 with oil change with Savsol 20W40 Mineral Bike oil. It all has to do with the internal design of the engine !Originally posted by muztariq View PostEven in ratings there are specifications. How are 20w40 oils not bike specific? @mods, can anyone make any vague comment on the forum or there are some rules?
@GOLDWING how is my explanation that various vehicle manufacturer test various grade oil in their product and recommend oil grade accordingly different from yours that it depends in the internal engine design?
Doesnt the vehicle manufacturer supposed to know the engine internals?Last edited by xPolice; 02-16-2015, 01:47 PM.

I will explain some oil basics. It will be a a bit of a "gyan"
. But please bear with me.
10W40 is not a rating. it denotes the viscosity of the oil.
10W40 (also written as 10W-40) is a multigrade oil. Special additives are added to a 10W oil so that it retains a certain viscosity at 100 Celsius. If an oil falls within a particular range of viscosity limits it is termed as a 40 oil
please see below the viscosity chart in (cst)
SAE___Min___max
20___5.6___< 9.3
30___9.3___<12.5
40___12.5___ <16.3
50___ 16.3___<21.9
Example: - so if a 10W oil after adding additives has a viscosity of < 12.5 cst at 100 celsius, then it becomes a 10W30 oil. if it equals or is above 12.5, then it automatically becomes a 10W40 oil.
Ratings that you are talking about are provided by an institution called API. please see ratings below
SG - Introduced 1989 - has much more active dispersant to combat black sludge.
SH - Introduced 1993 - has same engine tests as SG, but includes phosphorus limit 0.12%
SJ - Introduced 1996 - has the same engine tests as SG/SH, but phosphorus limit 0.10%
SL - Introduced 2001 - all new engine tests reflective of modern engine designs meeting current emissions standards
SM - Introduced November 2004 - improved oxidation resistance, deposit protection and wear protection, also better low temperature performance over the life of the oil compared to previous categories.
I hope this clarifies the basics.

Motul 10W30 oil is a better choice among the 3 u have mentioned.
An out of the box suggestion is to use a thicker oil like 10W40 as u urself are saying that the engine will get hot. A 10W30 oil may not be enough to provide protection at higher temperatures while riding the ghats. Please take in mind that u will not travel on the expressway and the mumbai-lonavala ghat is a steep one and may over heat the engine.
This suggestion may not be supported by many, but a 10W40 oil will be a better option as it will provide better protection. Better safe than sorri
.
I would suggest motul 10W40 but it will cost above of 1K Rs. Another cheap option will be Shell AX7.
And dont worri about warranty being void, because after 2000kms nobody will be able to tell if it was a 10W40 or a 10W30 oil.

If u have done the "run-in" of the engine on a 10W30 oil, then the engine is attuned to a thinner oil. As 10W40 is a thicker oil, it will put stress on the engine and will cause mileage drop.Originally posted by pradeeppk View PostI have a Honda trigger. few days back i change its engine oil with Shell advance ultra 10w40 full synthetic. The engine is smooth and a bit sluggish. but mileage is reduced from 58 to 52 kms. Previously the engine oil was 10w30 filled from service center. IS the higher grade engine oil is the reason of mileage drop?
U have 2 choices
1) give the bike for servicing to a good local mechanic. Dont change the 10W40 oil. Just tell the mechanic about mileage drop. If he can get the carb setting to a position where the mileage increases to 58 with the same oil, then hurrrah!!! we have achieved it.
Beware : - This is an out of box suggestion. It may work only if the mechanic is competent enough and knows carb tuning thoroughly. Do at your own risk.
2)Change the oil to 10W30 oil. Dont turn and look back again. Keep using 10W30 oil till u go in for an engine overhaul. After engine overhaul u can use 10W40 oil as u have to do engine "run-in" again.
Choice is yours.Last edited by Honda_abhi; 02-16-2015, 07:16 PM.

hope you are doing well.
I would like to add another fact about how oils are marketed in India.
It is mentioned in the link given by you that veedol take off 4t 10w30 exceeds JASO MA2 and API SM. This doesnt mean that the oil is certified as API SM. If it is certified it will have the API donut logo on its bottle. Please refer to link below.
API Engine Oil Classification
In India, customers are made fools by mentioning that the oil "exceeds" or "meets" certain standards. If the oil sample is sent to the institute and actually meets the norms it gets the certification which is printed on the bottle.
Please check for the API donut on the bottle before buying any engine oil henceforth. Everything else is just

Thanks Honda_abhi
Refilled with 10 w 30 full synthetic oil from TVS, milage is slightly increased, then tuned it by a local mechanic. Now getting 55 average in city. After riding above 500 kms with TVS 10w30 oil engine is now so smooth, can't experienced this kind of smoothness before. Also engine is a bit sluggish compared to honda 10w30 oil. But engine notice is reduced a lot.
Can I use the 200 kms used shell full synthetic oil later?

Re: Engine Oils
You shud have continued with the shell oil as the oil takes first 400 kms to settle in. When the oil is brand new it gives less mileage. As it sets in, the mileage increases. This is something which I have first-hand experienced with shell oils.Originally posted by pradeeppk View PostThanks @Honda_abhi

Used engine oil cannot be stored outside the engine as it breaks down due to oxidation. Please dont store it and use again later.
