Now how do all of you say that xW40( Cp1R, Petronas, AGIP) is being used without any hassles.?? isnt that the wrong grade. what does NEAREST GRADE mean??
I remember i was being shouted at for my ignorance because P180 needed a 20w50 and I was using Castrol power 1 Racing which was 10W40 I think.

First of all All HH bikes were using 20w40 oil before & I think from past 1 year they have changed thier recommended grade to 10w30.
Your best bet if you want to use Mineral oil is HH oil which costs 220 I think if you put another 150Rs you will get petronas Sprinta which is fully synthetic oil & it will be better than Mineral

Now does this mean that I can use an oil with a higher viscosity index at the end.?? i.e. is it alright to use xW40 instead of an xW30?? and is it wrong to use xW40 instead of an xW50???

    yes you are right

    Could someone elaborate on this??

Mods: I seriously feel we should have something like the first post on this thread.
Example: for every bike's name - the recommended engine oils( mineral, semi-synth & fully synth), the approx prices, the other compatible oil brands and available dealer in a specific city. Maybe an Excel document or so.
This would avoid confusion because the thread is 1479 replies old and I'm sure nobody would have the patience to read all the posts to find out which suits them best. This results in everyone asking the same old questions repeatedly.

    This is just a suggestion.

Well I have bought a 2005 model ZMA three days back and I want to know which oil would be best. Name, availability, price & other recommendations.
As I said above your best bet would be Petronas Sprinta Fully Sythetic @ 370rs/ltr

What you have asked for is a very good point. If someone can compose a list we can ad it up to the first post.

But then, the articles in the first few pages by Sandeep K Ram are perfectly adequate to understand most of the things about Engine Oils and their grades. The problem is that most of us just want a point answer to our questions. That need not be possible all the time.

For your question, your 2005 ZMA comes with a recommended oil of 20W40 grade. My best bet list in no particular order -
              > Gulf Pride 4T Plus 20W40 API SM JASO MA2
              > Yamalube 20W40 API SJ & API SL JASO MA
              > Petronas Sprinta 5000 4T Fully Synthetic 10W40 API SJ JASO MA
              > Motul 300V FL 5W40 Fully Synthetic

              > HeroHonda 4T 10W30 API SL (except the one made by BPCL MAK)
              > Gulf Pride 4T Plus 10W30 API SM JASO MA2

The problem again is the best suitable one depends on your affordability, climatic conditions, type of riding, the bike.... and probably more factors. Do you really want to try all the options or want to stick to something that is giving you good results?

No reason. May be it missed my mind because of two reasons:
                  1) It seems to be available only in Bangalore
                  2) Never used it or don't have many first hand reports except for very few from Bangalore guys...

                  • Thanks Abhilash and Hydbiker: that was very helpful.
So that narrows down my personal choices to Petronas 5000T and Agip 5W40( wont that be tooo thin).. I live in Bangalore so I should be able to find it somewhere. Any idea how much the Agip costs?

The last time I checked (over 6 months back) it costed Rs 620. And it won't be too thin. Don't worry.

                      • If its 620/- i can go in for Motul 300V only. looks like petronas would be the best deal

But have these users tried out the RIGHT grade? I think not! HH oil is 10W30 and all the others are not of that grade. Seems to me like a pretty dissimilar comparison, at the moment...

If Valvoline tends to heat up more, you might really like Gulf. There was a noticeable drop in engine heating when I started using Gulf. But I'm comparing Gulf 10W30 with HH Idemitsu. Can't say how much difference there will be between Gulf and Valvoline (both 20W40).

BTW how does half litre pack of castrol SAE 90 gear oil cost. i got it for 140rs. not sure if it was the correct price but i paid for it anyway.
If it is indeed taking it as serious feedback (which I'd really doubt), then hopefully they will change their strategy of selling by making quality products rather than using crafty marketing.

140 bucks for SAE 90?? IIRC BPCL's SAE 90 is much cheaper... and should be good enough for the job!

                          • Satish, I think it is time to sue Castrol for not printing the MRP on the package...

Earlier they did not bother to mention the Engine oil grade on the packing and now it is even the price...

And, guys, It is not that Castrol makes very bad stuff. In fact, they make pretty good stuff. Castrol is my number 1 fall back option. What goes against them is -
                            1) Their pricing is higher than other much better products in the market
                            2) There is a lot of counter-fit Castrol products in the market - owing to their popularity.

+1,the only think i hate is the engine oils specified to bikes only.Commercial vehicle owners(read truckers and tourist operators) swear by castrol.I have been using castrol products(read engine oil, brake oil, gear oil, coolant etc) in my 10 year oil carb zen without any hitch and am satisfied with it.Earlier used to use castrol gtx then went ahead with the magnatec, untill recently shifted to petronas syntium 800 semi synthetic. Here in Mumbai around 95% people use castrol activ series.Castrol people know, consumers would still buy their oil even if they are expensive, main reason being brand name.
