I have very little clue about the economics of helmet manufacturers but I don't want to assume that all Chinese made helmets will be of poor quality. I believe higher quality of materials used will produce better helmets. That is upto the manufacturers to decide how much money they wanna pour in. As such they are saving a lot in labour costs by setting up their factories in China. I've been hearing in international forums about the falling standards of KBC lids due to cost cutting measures. So its clear you can't trust a brand blindly(Akuma/OGK are exceptions :P).

In the end the only assurance for us is, if it passes these Snell/ECE/DOT tests. Hearing about these DOT "stickers" has made me think twice.

I really never heard of Akuma/Ogk. Pardon my ignorance. If you really wanna know where each lids stand, check this helmet test report by Sharp. This help only if uou buy from international range.

SHARP - The Helmet Safety Scheme

@ all-This is one of the best web site you have to surf to know the most about various models and the ratings of each helmet.

Thanks for that link. Cool site. OGK is a family-owned helmet co. in Japan. Guess all their lids are hand made. Exceptional quality but not easily available outside Japan. Same with Akuma.

Joel, if you are getting this Helmet, lemme know, we'll order together.
And yes KBC Helmets are excellent if not as good as Arais or Sharks

Mostof the KBC lids are rated very low by sharp(mostly just 1/5)

Just have a look at the link i have provided above and then proceed.

            • Man, today I saw a ARAI (GP spec) helmet in Tokyo today. Full CF. And how much?
Yen 500,000 (More than INR 2.5 lakhs!) That makes regular Arai's and Shoeis at $500 look like closeouts!

Nope, I wasn't carrying my camera. But the model is ARAI GP-6RC and here's the link to the brochure and pic from yahoo.co.jp:

small premium to pay for someone who can afford one and knows how important head-gear is

^^checked the link and how do we change the visor? screw-driver?

The visor comes off using a small coin or a screwdriver. This helmet is so expensive because this is GP ready and FIA approved. I believe it would offer only marginal extra protection than a $600 Arai, only much lighter, which means less fatigue for the pro rider when doing lap after lap.

Regular Carbon fibre Arai's (RX-7's) go here for around $500 or so, which is 1/10 the price. So if anyone is into CF stuff, they should go for the RX-7 CF's and not the GP spec $5000 helmet!

                              • Looks pretty CHEAP in quality. Try getting MC1, looks are same n better & quality wont suffer either.
                                Cost: Rs.1300
