  • Re: Helmets

I currently own a 1300 done KTM Duke 390 and a very basic Studds Modular helmet. I have no visor/windshield on the bike ( won't help with my 6" height anyways)
I am looking for a new helmet that
    1. Offers low noise upto 120kmph
    2. Costs < 6k INR
    3. Minimalist graphics and 61cm size
Now I have searched online a lot and the problem I face is that either the size is not available or there is no data available on the Wind Noise. I understand now that only the very expensive (not available in India) models have any kind of testing done for wind noise and I will have to probably resort to ear plugs.
The primary problem with that is you are cutting out all sounds then and that I want to avoid. Ideally the generation of noise should be brought down instead of insulating out the noise. My experience with helmet is minimal and so far I have ridden with a turban at speeds less than 100 kmph and somehow the turban has a much better shape to cut air and also cut out wind noise without reducing my hearing.
We don't have a perfect solution available, but what is the best possible in the given constraints? Thanks for the help.

So unless ur spending ₹20k+ on a helmet, a really good noise isolation is not really gonna happen. I have a HJC -FG17, and noise, even though it's really reduced, still comes in once you cross 100kmph...
I used earplugs for a while, but like you said, cutting out all sound is dangerous in our country.
Then I came across the perfect solution, the NoNoise Motorsport Earplugs. They are silicone earplugs, with a ceramic filter along the centre... It's designed to filter out sound but only allow in particular frequencies, such as engine noise and horns... I've been using it for a while and they are brilliant... Do check them out... I got mine from USA for 12$ but a similar product, the Alpine Motosafe is available online here in India http://www.sbkstore.in/alpine-motosa...-earplugs.html

Both the Alpine Motosafe as well as the ones i have are washable and reusable... Do check out their reviews individually on webbikeworld.com
      I hope this helps

Went to SPG store at chennai .
Got myself a MT blade .
Was more inclined to Revenge but only the tri color option was available that too without a internal sun visor .

Test rided it and came back impressed .
Wind noise is not a issue as my bike tops out under 130 plus my bikes noise at that speed will be more than the winds .

        MT blade
Costs 4950 (Tamil nadu has an exemption for tax on helmets ).
Their billing system is down and hence they told that the invoice will be mailed .
        Iridium visor was quoted 800.

Internal sun visor is really good offering camouflage in the morning to look at fairer sex and usable clear view at night (especially for contact lens users ).
Both the visors are usable even with a spectacles on (didn't get in the way ).

        • Differnce in MT Axxis and Blade

          Hello guys,

I was looking for MT Helmets in S size and found that only Axxis series have S size available...since it being an entry level model, would the build quality differ much from the higher models like Blade etc. ?

I know sun visor isn't there, but is it worth otherwise?

          Cheers

Axxis costs 4100 ₹ revenge is in the ₹5000 range +/- 200 both are aerodynamic series fit for racing less wind noise than blade for me blade is not that aerodynamic in its shape

Went to Karol Bagh, Delhi. Chopra Automobiles has got new stock of MT and there are no issues with SOL too. He can get the item if someone place an order with him. Attaching his card for further help

I had used a ls2 modular helmet for the past 2 years and found there was a lot of wind noise with it however lately i have discarded it as i was not comfortable with it, recently i tried the MT Blade and Axxis at the store which i found extremely comfortable and am planning to buy for my daily use in addition to the Nolan 104 which i got a few months back.

also i have a doubt. the extended part on the top of the helmet (like cap), whether it will aid in aerodynamics.. ? i mean compared to the normal ones. i have never used this type of helmet and this extension on top creates doubt on the aerodynamics.

                      thnaks.

Did around 200km on the KYT RC7 Samurai. So far, so bad.

Wind noise as early as 55kmph. Exponentially increases with speed. Unbearable at triple digit speeds.
Very little padding. It's as if they put a layer of cloth/form so that your head won't come into contact with the shell.
The buckle for the D ring is almost near the lip. Way too high for my liking.
No chin curtain. A fly came in and sat on my nose (thankfully not the eyes) when I was at good speeds.
The sizing is a bit odd. I haven't measured the circumference of my head. I wear M Sized shirts and head is not out of proportion with the body. The L size helmet is a tight fit.

The only good thing is that it looks good. Was getting stares everywhere.
