I have a simple query... Have I Been Duped?

I bought a SOL 68S wizard from Spartan Pro Gear more than a year back. I had ordered the L size (My Head circumference: 59cm). The Helmet was nice, but the fit has always been off. It is too large and wiggles a lot at speed. I thought that maybe it was my fault that I had ordered the wrong size or the shape of the helmet just did not complement my head.

However, I have noticed something weird with the lid.

As you can see in the pics (Attached) there are two very different measurements on the Padding (L) and the Shell (XXL!). Aren't they way off to provide any protection? Isn't this wrong? Isn't a loose fitting DOT certified helmet as good as those crappy roadside helmets at protecting your head from impact.

PS: I know I am an idiot for noticing this after such a long time.

The SOL 68s used to come with two shell sizes. The smaller shell accommodated size XS-M, while the larger, sizes L-2XL. The difference in the sizes in between the same shell was achieved with thicker or thinner padding. So what you have is a standard product. If the helmet was loose fitting, why didn't you exchange it then?

Disclaimer - this was the standard till SPG dealt with the product. I don't know whether the same standard applies now.

FYI - Even today SPG services helmets sold by it years ago, even though it stopped selling SOL more than a year ago. SPG still maintains a stock of ratchets, visors (limited), liners, cheek pads and other plastic components like vent sliders, buttons and other bits for its customers. Even the present distributor does not stock this inventory. A few weeks ago, a fellow XBhpian messaged me for some missing vents covers for his three year old helmet, which were shipped to him for free.

Thanks for providing input. Will look for higher brands later as budget is not good this time.
Do you have any idea which 1 is good in fit, comfort, safety, quality from studd motocross & vega offroad ?

Personally these two (studds and vega) are no where close to high end brands specially the protection near the chin area. But if you can wait and add more money get SOL dual purpose helmet.
And just an advise if you biy motocross helmets, avoid using it for tours and highway or city riding, they are specifically built for motocross/ off roading

get a good helmet for your spouse as well, use helmet lock (but these are not safe). Just show them off while you go shopping!

i use it inverted to put some stuff, like basket. its good to carry around your gf/wife's latches and stuff :P just kiddin...

you cant risk to place it in the parking lot of the shopping malls, but, people ( who know the price tag of the helmet) get tempted to steal it if they see a good one. so you are out of options, have to carry around the burden of your head, good part is it keeps you arms toned!

that's interesting! thanks for the clarification.

have a question, Outer shell, inner shell - same for all the sizes ( in the range you mentioned) and only inner padding is of different sizes? so all the 'SOL helmets'would look same irrespective of L,XL,XXL?

is it same with MT and other brand helmets as well? just curious.

I currently own a HJC FG17, and am facing a major wind noise issue just like you, which is a shame for a helmet that costs ₹15,000. I did however find this article online which seems to explain a lot. Do try the solutions recommended, and most importantly, try what is recommended by "L.S" in the comments section, I tried it and it seems to be working beautifully. Lemme know how goes!

It's pretty light, weighs in at about 1400-1500gms, which is pretty light. If you really want something insanely light though, the LS2 Carbon Fiber one is available for ₹14,000 at Bachoo Motors.
I absolutely love my HJC, but I wouldn't recommend buying it without using it for a ride or two as I can't figure out the wind noise issue

First of all, Thanks for replying. And my bad for assuming the worst.

I had suspected that the helmet may have come in only 2 shell sizes. So, from what you are saying, every helmet ranging from L to XXL would have the same 'XXL' shell and only the thickness of the padding would go on decreasing from from helmet size 'L' to 'XXL'? And there would be no way to fix the fit by changing the padding?

Why didn't I exchange it? Because of the horrible courier service. The first helmet I received was broken and had to sent it back. Talked to the courier service here and they told me that I would have to be very lucky to receive the helmet undamaged. After a considerable amount of time, I received the replacement and thankfully it seemed to have survived the transit. When I used the helmet, found it to be loose fitting, but I was not ready to test my luck again. So, had to go with it.

Lastly, you mentioned the visors. Are they still available?

Not a silly question at all , I am married and so can confidently share my experience, I do have a helmet lock in one of my bike but if the helmet is not very costly, I do lock it or even hang it on the bike handles. However, will I do so with my LS2 (worth 5900/-) or MT helmet (4700/-)-- the answer is no, people can steal it anyhow, so I do carry that with me in malls and trust me have got compliments on my helmet. people have asked me about the helmet inquisitively, praised it and shown respect that I use a good quality safety gear .. so all is worth!!

I would like to know your general view on THH helmets, I was just browsing/looking for helmet in Black/red combination and found this at a price point of 3450 in flipkart, also on other online portals it costs upto 3900/- , but wanting to know what are your views?

                              Is it

Yes. SPG imported a stocklot of visors from the Malaysian distributor after cutting off ties with SOL formally to serve its customers, since the new distributor wasn't stocking it. i'm not sure if all types are still available (I saw smoked and Iridium awhile back) but you could check.
