i stand corrected. but good to know that there is a date of expiry on your helmet.

dropping the helmet (the height ) has to be clarified as a fall of helmet from your motorcycle seat means bye bye helmet.

motorcycling is really getting complex ( and expensive ) here. may be similar yard sticks apply to our riding gear too ??

Quality riding gear might be expensive, but some last a long time if not dropped. My leather jacket and leather riding pants for example. It is almost five years now and it can easily go another ten with regular care. There is a shorter lifespan for gloves and boots, though. Unless you buy something like the Sidi Vortice boots which has replacable outsoles!

Motorcycles and Motorcycling are too sweet to be complex. Racing is complex IMO.
Expensive? Well, all good things in life go that way.

        No.
Riding gears have armor built unto them and you have to take care not to bend/break/insert force unto them.

If there is a visible damage in your riding gear, you may contemplate a change, a small low-side won't do any harm.

^^A 30K tin w/o abuse will give far better protection than anything we have in India(manufactured) for twice the no. of years.

            point taken.

in fact we bikers are paranoid about wearing riding gear. what about scooter / moped's ? do we think that gear is only for mbikes?

my point has relevence only to india where 2 wheelers are used for daily commute and no rules governing, in vellore on bikes the minimum load i have seen is 3 with the figure going up to a full family of 5 or more with 2 kids plonked on the fuel tank.

                  • Few pages back, I enquired on a good riding jacket & finally decided upon DSG Nero - DSG Nero Jacket - Rs5,499.00

However, I kept the purchase postpone due to my Rx build; I've firmly decided now to buy one, but, after hearing so many life saving incidents using a good gears, I'm contemplating Nero along with the following products...
                    1. Alpinestars Verona Air Jacket - Rs7,690.00 - Obviously the price is less & it has compartments to add chest pad & back protector. Not sure if those could be purchased separately as I WANT a back protector.
                    2. Alpinestars T-Breeze Air-Flo Jacket Black - Rs9,499.00 - I'm biased towards this as this has some foam for inserting the back protector, which I assume is missing (foam) in the above; also has reflectors which are good; also the review says its water proof though the site doesn't mention it.
                    3. Alpinestars Verona Waterproof Jacket - Rs10,749.00 - Only advantage I see is water proof & comes with extra price.

In addition, I want to buy a riding pant Alpinestars AST-1 Waterproof Riding Pants - Rs7,990.00 & this one seems to be water proof; in that case, I could combine this one along with 3 above which, I assume, could serve as a protection from rains. How good is this one? I know the knee pads has to be bought separately, but it has a compartment for it. Will any knee pad is fit enough or should I necessarily buy the one from A* for a perfect fit?

My usage is almost everyday to office + touring which is, say once in 4 months or so.

Has anyone been using any of the above & have any suggestion for me? Or should I consider something else apart from the above? I cannot stretch much beyond any of this like, 15K only for the riding jacket & 12K only for the pants. The lesser, the better. I'm more biased towards A* because, somehow I get an impression that they're the leaders, however, I'm willing to compromise on any other brand that are almost same or equal to A* to be bought only in India. Any help is appreciated. Tks.

PS - Last but not the least, is DSG Nero same or equivalent to A* in terms of protection, life & quality? I've nothing against Nero, its just an brand name A* making me feel they're the leaders.

After contemplating enough over Cramster & DSG jackets, I finally picked up a Nero for myself just last evening (there was a lack of stock for my size since long). You might ask: why did you not look at A*, JoeRocket etc. Well, the reason was that I wouldn't know what size would fit me well. To give you a perspective, among the DSG jackets, the Phoenix for my size was M, while the Nero that fit me was L.
If you are aware of the size that would fit you snugly, then you can go ahead with preferably a waterproof jacket, with decent air circulation (Chennai weather in mind).
The Nero is a fantastic jacket. I'd say it is the most functional one among the DSG jackets. The build quality looks top notch, & there are compartments where you can insert a chest protector (jacket come with a thin foam here).

One thing that I found missing in the jackets you have listed above is the (3M) reflective stripes. I think the reflective stripes are a must for a riding jacket. This was another reason why I didn't look much at the international brands, as quite a few of them lacked the reflective stripes.

I know its way too early to say, but I would recommend you to pick the Nero as I have read sufficient positive reviews about it.

A* is definitely te leader in riding gear, but I don't tink DSG is a compromise in any way.

Do let us know what you finally zero in on.

The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.

                      • @Nikhil - Thanks for the suggestion; I'm still skeptical & I might settle for DSG Nero or A* T-Breeze Air-Flo Jacket but definitely with riding pants.

I don't think DSG has any riding pants right? So that makes a compulsion to settle with A* to get a matching between riding pants & jacket. Still not decided.

The tip you provided on the size is something I never thought about. I was thinking of getting a Large & thought everything would be the same. Tks for the tip.

If I were to try one of them, I've to make a 340+340 Kms trip, which is not possible anytime soon & that's the reason I want to order it online.

I'm also thinking of getting DSG revive along to save some shipping cost. Hope it has protection for fingers right?

Well you get what you pay for. A* is definitely much better in terms of quality and protection than DSG but this is said in general. I haven't browsed those links you have provided to make a fair comparison.

But i can safely say that DSG is also very good in quality. I still crib and regret not buying the Nero. Wanted one but Orion had no stock of the Nero in my size and my ninja was due for delivery so bought the crapster in a hurry. If you can afford A* go for it. Else DSG should do pretty well.

Try the jacket on before buying. Sizes are tricky.

DSG revive has CF/Kevlar protection for the fingers and also has air vents on the fingers. A very good pair of gloves and i'm very happy with them. If you want a full gauntlet one on the same lines (read as full leather and superior protection) go for DSG Carbon. The velcro straps are better on the carbon. The ones on my revive have started to show signs of wear and they dont stick that well.

P.S. Orion also has Joe Rocket mesh jackets in stock. Why dont you ride down to Blore over a weekend and take a look. That way you can meet us blore xbhp'ians too.

So I guess there's nothing to contemplate anymore I guess, I'll go with A* which I hope will give me long life; beyond with, "the brand says it all"

I'll be settling 99% with Alpinestars T-Breeze Air-Flo Jacket Black - Rs9,499.00 as it has got reflective stripes (not sure why they reduced the price, which reminds me of DSG Falcon)

Does the riding pants have anything specific? I know it doesn't come with knee pads, but still, is there any significance? I'm planning to order a riding pant along with DSG revive.

Well, we were supposed to be at Hosur 5-Nov & I thought of dropping in at Orion; but then plans are changing & not sure when if we'll make it & hence decided to order it through online. I've been waiting for over 3 months to buy one & its not happening. So better online than NEVER!!!

Riding pants, oh yes! The Nero doesn't have a zipper to link it to the riding pants (probably because DSG doesn't make riding pants). Aditya was telling me that his Cramster Raptor has this zipper though.

Do ensure you are sure about the sizing bro. An ill-fitting jacket with armour moving around is not something that will keep one safe. Infact, the moving armour can cause some damage to the body, on an impact.

btw, Orion Motors here doesn't stock the A* jackets. They only have the DSG jackets, & RJays ones. They have A* (& RJays) boots though.

Adi has already told you about the gloves.

No Cramster for sure!!! So that makes only one option which is A*

It should be a right fit isn't it & at the same time shouldn't be tight?

Any idea on the usage of A* riding pants? Is it only for hiding the knee pads & water resistance? Any idea if my choice of jacket & this riding pant will go together?
