this is taken from planet dsg site"Protection features include removable CE certified Bio Armor elbow and shoulder protectors. As in all Alpinestars Jackets, there is a Chest pad compartment with PE padding (Bionic Chest Pads available for purchase separately) and Back protector compartment with PE padding (CE certified Bio Armor Back Protector available separately). yes, exactly why I'm chosing this particular jacket. I want a mesh jacket for summer use, and one which has chest protection. I am actually looking for some less costly one, which has some chest protection, but if nothing suits, I'll buy this.

I really dont understand why the local players just omit the chest protection. In the event of a fall, the chest is equally prone to hitting something, like say the handlebar.

This sunday I had a fall and thanks to all my riding gear, I'm perfectly fine. The riding pants, helmet and partially my jacket got spoiled, but the joy of walking away unhurt is unparallelled.

@ Lijo - First of all, its good to hear that you're safe. !

To answer your question, the reasons are rather straightforward.

              1. Chest protection means that the armor will block the passage of air into the jacket. Ventilated mesh jackets are designed for air-flow and putting in armour at the entry point would defeat the purpose.

              2. Armour is designed for two things- impact absorption and abrasion resistance. Physiologically, we tend to roll over onto our side or back in a slide, so chances of abrasion injury are lower in the chest area. Even when the rider gets tossed off his bike, his landing is normally broken by his hands, which take the impact of the fall before the chest. That said, collapsed internal organs are a major reason for fatalities on the road but that severity of impact cannot be protected against anyway. That's why even on track, in the best leathers, the chest is normally not protected.

In MX, roost protectors are used primarily for flying gravel and crashes from other motorcycles. IMHO chest protection would be best used in touring ,especially off-road where chances are good that you could be tossed off your bike onto some hard surfaces at lower speeds. In these kind of rides, I too am worried about chest protection, and I use my Forcefield Body Armour (see this link - Forcefield Extreme Harness Flite | Forcefield Body Armour and Climate Control ) under my jacket by removing the back protector from my jacket.

In most other scenarios, I feel too uncomfortable to wear heavy chest protection for long periods of time.

@ Fahim - The Helios is a specific hot weather riding jacket, designed for ventilation. It does have a removable rain liner too which is designed for light rains. This liner can also be used as a windcheater in colder weather, which some guys have used even in Ladakh. However, I would not say it is all-weather, since it is specifically designed for hot and humid climate. Spartan ProGear does not have a reseller in Delhi yet.

@ Fahim - I think you misunderstood my post. I did not suggest buying or not buying any brand. I was replying specifically to Lijo's query about the reason why chest armor is not normally used in mesh jackets.

In order to select a jacket for yourself, I suggest the following.

                            1. Identify the purpose - is it going to be everyday commuting, occasional touring or specific use? For everyday use, I would consider weight, durability and the conditions/weather I would face while using it. For occasional touring use, I would be less concerned about weight but more concerned about the kind of weather the jacket would have to face. For specific use like to Leh/Ladakh, I would be focused on the terrain and weather that I would use my jacket in.

                            2. Be aware that no jacket does it all, inspite of tall claims from manufacturers - no product can be truly all-weather/all terrain/all climates. Its just like no bike can truly be an all-rounder. Bikes can specifically good for touring/track /off-roading and some can even be used in all roles, but most all-rounders are compromises as they are jack-of-all-trades and master of none. You can for example use a KTM 200 for all kinds of terrain, but it cannot excel at all. A specific purpose bike will always be better for that purpose. Your jacket selection is exactly the same.

In order to be truly hot weather, a jacket has to have maximum ventilation and preferably mesh only.

Cold weather jackets should have less ventilation and preferably not be made of mesh, so that air-flow is restricted and insulation can happen.

True water-proof jackets will not allow air to pass through and will seal tightly against the skin, but will be like a steam bath in our hot and humid country. Be prepared to be soaked in perspiration rather than rain!

                            3. Select based on type of use and budget. I do not like to compromise on my gear and I personally believe in specific use products, so;

                            On the highway and Street
In hot weather, which is 90% of the time, I use a mesh jacket.
In light rains, I continue to use the mesh jacket with the rain liner.
In heavy rains, I use the mesh jacket with a proper raincoat on top.
In cool weather, the mesh jacket with rain-liner which also serves as a wind-cheater.
In cold weather, I use an all Cordura jacket without mesh to keep the cold out.
In extreme cold, the all Cordura with a thermal liner.

                            On track - perforated leathers.

While off-roading - mesh jacket with internal body armour.

If you cannot buy more than one jacket, be aware that you will be making a compromise on the purchase as the product cannot do all things perfectly. In this case, my suggestion would be to select a jacket that will be suitable for you in most conditions (with Delhi climate in mind, I think a mesh jacket) and then team it up with a proper rain coat/suit for rains and thermals for cold weather.

                            Hope this helps! Cheers!
