Hi guys,
I just bought A Cramster Breezer Jacket & gloves. Now the problem is my parents are insisting me to wear a reliable chest protector ,back protector & knee guards when i go for touring on my bike.

So could you please suggest some chest & back protectors which can be used along with the Breezer jacket. Should i go for bionic ones or tougher pads ( for back) that can be inserted in the breezer jacket.

I know its a mesh jacket so most probably i would have to go for a bionic chest protectors right ??
Or is there anyway to modify the jacket , to insert some kind of chest pads when necessary? ( I know it sounds crazy !! )

Please suggest some options for affordable knee guards also.

I don't intent to put a huge hole in my bank account right now, so please suggest some affordable (yet safe) options

For touring, the best bet is to get a second jacket (like A*) which already has inbuilt pockets for protectors, buy the protector accessories and put them in. You can go for a non-mesh type. BTW, dont forget a good riding pants also for touring. So wait till you have the bank, till then ride extra safe

I would not suggest modifying the jacket. Instead you can pick up some body armor that you can wear under your jacket (if the fit permits) from Icon, Bohn or Forcefield . Problem is that all these will set you back by a fair bit of monetary damage. Perhaps you can leverage your parents insistence with some financial assistance from them? .

Lijo's suggestion of a jacket with built in protection is also sound, but it's likely to cost more and its use will be limited to the jacket. Separate armor would allow some other use, like MTB and MX .

Info on Duties of Imported Riding Gear except Helmets!

This post is been made to help all the guys who are in dilemma of what import duties will be incurred when getting riding gears like Textile & Leather Gloves, Jackets, Pants, Boots & even includes protectors shipped from various websites abroad!

I specially made a point to go through the India Customs Tariff Duties Book to get this information just for my friends & buddies here

So the Duties are as follows:

1. Riding Apparels (Includes jackets, pants & gloves):

Basic Duty: 10% or Rs 320/piece or which ever is higher for Men & 10% or Rs 385/piece or which ever is higher for Women
CVD (Countervailing Duties): 12%
Hence the total duty chargeable is ~22%



2. Footwear (Includes all type of riding boots):

Basic Duty: 10%
CESS: 0.7%
ACD (Additional Duties): 4%
CVD (Countervailing Duties): 12%
Hence the total duty chargeable is ~28.852%

However, there are a few points to be noted.

1. The percentage/rupee value varies as per the fabric used in the construction of garment. This value increases for synthetics and decreases for naturals, except certain prohibited categories. This can be as high as 700/- per garment, which can be over 20% of the invoice value!

2. The CVD is calculated on the estimated MRP of the product in India. The thumb rule followed by Customs for lack of any credible database is 3 times the original invoice value! This means 30% of the invoice value in dollars!

I can tell you from experience, the average is 38-40% of invoice value + surcharges, cess, freight, insurance, etc., which works out to a whopping 50% of purchase price! As is known by many, it seems the biggest dacoits and robbers are our own government!

All the above notwithstanding, individual mail orders from foreign shores are normally charged only 10% of invoice value of the product, since it is assumed it is not meant for resale. However, it entirely depends on the whims and fancies of the officer on duty at the moment. If he's had a bad bay, God help you!

Some consignments come through without any duties at all, like my SIDI's yesterday - zilch duty. Yet I have paid as high as 35% for some other items bought off the net. Go figure!

Cool! But how i decide on for the shoe size? Different brands' different shoe sizes generally fit and that too depending on the type of shoe! Like my foot fits in a UK 10 Adidas, UK 9 Puma, UK 9 Converse etc. So u can't simple buy it, right? So any suggestions?

The best thing would be to walk into a bata showroom and get your shoe size from there. Orazo's follow the UK size code like bata.

Well I have heard about the chaos theory at Customs in India

One has to be very lucky to get his/her good to get in hands without paying even a penny as a Duty. This is the reason why I still have refrained from ordering very tempting dealed riding gears from various sites in US. As Im a student & have got a tight budget. I cant figure out how much more will be the duties & have to settle for stuff available in India

Also, i am looking for good knee protectors, something between Cramster and A*. Have heard that cramster knee guards arent any good and some have mentioned the rivet giving up in the very first ride without any fall or so.
The alpinestar bionic ones are bit costly. Any suggestion around 3k? There are few people selling the Thor sector knee protectors around 2-2.5k but cant judge it just from looks. Anyone tried Scoyco ones? Any suggestions?

I have used the Thor Sector on my Leh trip. Got the last piece at 2.5K from PRS.
It does not have an upper velcro strap but there are two below the knee. The upper will jut out during rides (- and it was collecting snow by the kilo at K Top ).
But the quality of the stuff is good and the two straps are enough to keep it from moving around. Also there are no rivets on the sides and less chances of scratches on the bike.
If you can't afford the A* bionic, I would say this is the next best bet.

I can't leverage my parents for money , because they are the ones who actually bought me the jacket & gloves in the first place !!!

so as Lijok bhai told will be saving up for buying better jacket (like A*) & till then will ride extra safe .. let me see if the fit permits me to use some body armour inside the jacket

I Will be buying a decent set of knee guards though ... any suggestions for affordable (yet safe ) pair of knee guards?

Can I please have recommendations for gloves?

Using handlebars grips make it too thick for me to use the brake with two fingers effectively. I'd like to remove the grips and use gloves alone on the bare handlebars, so I am hoping the gloves have a little bit of padding atleasat.

I'm looking for gloves below 2,500. So far I've come across DSG Nitro and Axo pro race gloves, can the owners please comment on those? Thanks!

Thanks again Mithun! Yes, this is what i am worried about with the Thor sector. Will check it out personally in PRS and see if there is any space for jugged to get it working right as i would be using them for leh ride too.

Thank you for reply Viscmad. Well i dint have any problems with my Fox Raptor in more than two years now, but then they were never luckily crash tested. Its time for me to move on to better ones. How about the quality on Scoyco? Either scoyco or thor sector.. Or use the fox raptor for few more months and get A* bionic.. The A* reflex knee pads could have been an option but they are not listed on planetdsg now.

Regarding gloves, i have read issues with cramster TRG2 and so have decided for DSG primal.

I don't think removing the grips are a good idea at all. The grips are called that because they provide your hands with something "grippy" to hold onto. Bare pipes will be slippery and trust me, you do NOT want your hands slipping off the bars while riding!

I didn't mean the stock setup. I had additional grips added on the handle bars for comfort, but are just too thick.
