  • suggest a bike [budget 85k max]

i am posting this thread in behalf of my friend who wants a new bike in a budget of 85k [he can't increase his budget]

he's 19Years old, 5'8" and weighs around 71KG, currently riding his dad's kawasaki bajaj caliber.

    his requirements:

    atleast 40kpl mileage in 25% city + 75% highway [@speed 40-60kph]
    should be totally vibrations free
    reliability
    good looks
should suit him according to his height and weight

    few bikes he considered:

    1. TVS apache RTR 160 Fi : he likes it for Fuel injector and good mileage.

    2. yamaha FZ16 : looks and easy to ride

    3. TVS apache RTR180 [non ABS] : for power

    4. Honda unicorn / dazzler

Strict NO to pulsar and hero bikes

    please clear doubts:

    1. is there any vibration issues with apache 160 and 180 ?? some people say there is no vibration.

    2. what about reliability and maintenance of Fi as compared to carb 160 RTR ? does it worth spending extra?

    3. which one is better in terms of mileage, FZ16/FZ-S or Fazer ?

    4. what about honda's After sales service? many people say honda service centres suck and spare parts are not available etc.

    all other suggestions are welcomed
There is no destination, I just want to keep riding.

    Clearing your doubts,

    1. I did a TR on the new RTR a few days back. This is what I had to say.

I must admit that this was the very first time that I ripped an RTR 180 this much but I was actually impressed by the lack of vibes in the low end, below 6k RPM, it was 95% as smooth as my Pulsar. But as I took it over 7k, towards its 9k redline, it all went downhill. All the things infront of me looked as if they were beetle wings. The reason I am writing this 4 days late, is because, it took me 4 days to figure out what it looked/felt like. I still don't have words to describe the feel of the vibrations, maybe quite close to cellphone vibrator only with more amplitude.

Anyways, the bike was the facelifted model, and almost brand new with the odo showing 227km when I returned it.
Moral of the story: What some people say is absolutely WRONG!

    2. I doubt RTR Fi is still available. If it is, then it is a good buy overall, but it will have the RTR vibes. AFAIK, there is practically no extra maintenance for FI over carb.

    3. All 3 are exactly the same mechanically. Mileage could drop below 40 on occasions, especially on the highways. But owners insist that the mileage generally remains above that figure.

    4. I would leave this one for the owners to comment on.

Finally, do check with your friend if he can look beyond his anti-Hero bias and have a TR of the Impulse? It is an extremely fun bike to ride in and around the cities, fresh and unique looking and the FE also remains on the correct side of 40 on most occasions.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Mostly as per his requirement P180 is best for him, the speed range mentioned above any bike would give 40+kmpl even P180.

It's a nice bike and power/speed are also good, Rear tyres are awsome!! Manitenance are less!!

But anyways you don't want P180, no point talking. But it's best in the range!!

      few bikes he considered:

      1. TVS apache RTR 160 Fi : he likes it for Fuel injector and good mileage.
FI is advance technology!! so any time good on other bikes compare to Carb!!

      2. yamaha FZ16 : looks and easy to ride
      +1 VFM

      3. TVS apache RTR180 [non ABS] : for power
Excellent choice highly recommended ABS is true boon!!

      4. Honda unicorn / dazzler
When you are talking about power then unicorn is for smooth and mileage!

So only RTR 180 ABS VFM + 100

Strict NO to pulsar and hero bikes
      Any enemy ship ??

      please clear doubts:

      1. is there any vibration issues with apache 160 and 180 ?? some people say there is no vibration.
Any bike with 160 or 180cc will vibrate above 100kmph. No vibration till 100kmph
because they are capable of doing it with ease!!

      2. what about reliability and maintenance of Fi as compared to carb 160 RTR ? does it worth spending extra?
Any time!! Dude!! FI is modern technology!! But it comes with little rules too and more care taking!!

      3. which one is better in terms of mileage, FZ16/FZ-S or Fazer ?
All three share same angine, so performance is same!! But FZ16/FZ-S would give little better average then Fazer becuase of it's weight, but negligible!!

      4. what about honda's After sales service? many people say honda service centres suck and spare parts are not available etc.
It matters person to person, some people get nice SVC and some people get bad ones.

Few people reported CBR parts availability but my friends has never faced any issues.

Quality wise, yes there are little compromise as compared earlier Honda Bikes.

So NOW MY VOTE GOES FOR RTR 180 ABS only if no then P180 :P

Think about Pulsar 180. It's the best match for your requirements.
Suzuki GS150R will be a decent choice if you consider it.
Honda Unicorn is very common nowadays. Although, Dazzler is considerable.
Rather than Honda Unicorn you can have a look at Hero Hunk as an option.
Yamaha Fazer is a good choice again for Stunning looks.
Apache 180 RTR is awesome below 85k but for height of 5'8', I think it is bit small looking.

Frankly speaking Pulsar 180 can do the job for you..but i would recommend Apache 160/180 to you reason is the speed mentioned is 40-60 kmph, so there wont be any vibration you will face for sure, once you plan to go beyond 5k-6krpm then vibration comes in factor... (its Negligible till 70-80kmph)....

I own Apache 180 (ABS) i never feel irking with vibration yet, it works smooth like other bike (around 60-70kmph) & accelaration/pick up is uncomparable (*Period)....

The Only other bike i will recommend is Suzuki GS 150....

I would suggest avenger, if you are comfortable with a cruiser. This has great looks and fabulous comfort. Handling will be bit difficult initially, but once you got accustomed to it, will be great.
Its crime to ride a car alone, so I ride bike :).

for some reasons he hates pulsar. he says pulsar are very unreliable and common bike. one of his friends and his uncle owns pulsar 150 and he says both bikes are screwed in 2 years.

for hero bikes,i have no idea why he hates hero bikes

he'll ride mostly @40-60kph but sometimes @ 80-100kph during 200-300kms highway trips. that's why he's looking for totally vibration free bike. his current caliber vibrates like hell after 50kph

he likes avenger but not considering it as his regular usage includes 2KMs of offroading [unpaved roads]

Pulsar 180 is the best bike for you IMO, but it do lacks the 6th Gear.
GS150R got a 6th Gear but lacks the power to use it for anything better than cruising effortlessly.

if pulsars last for 2years then how in the gods name would it dominate all the segments in which it exists for a decade!
Anyway if he's not interested in pulsar then could opt for fazer if he likes fairing or fz else a180 if he doesnt ride above 70 for most of the times, dont even think of honda coz they dont have any premium commuters in this price range unicorn in too out dated and dazzler not great at looks

in the above mentioned thread.. He eventually chose the pulsar 220 for his dad, even after spending so much on 180 himself.. The good thing about pulsar is its the best value for money.. It not as maintenance free than a yamaha or a honda, but its part are much cheaper. But if you hate going to the svc at all, like me(never went there after 2nd service, just bought 2 oil filters sometime back).. Go for a japanese bike..

                              Go for FZ-S

Yamaha product is more reliable. I just bought Yamaha FZ-S a week ago. This bike is awesome. Don't go from RTR 160. They may disappear it as they disappeared Apache 150.

Unicorn Dazzler is another good thought but FZ-S is the deal for you.
