    Hello guys,

Quick intro: I've been riding a Yamaha RX135 for the past 9 years or so. A cousin wants it and I've decided to hand it over to him and get myself a new bike. For the past 2 weeks or so, I've been reading a lot of threads on XBHP and have found them quite useful and educating. Without further delay, let me post my question:

    Requirements:
    1. I'm not too tall (5.5), so I would really appreciate a bike that is lite in weight.
    2. Easy to handle. Very important as I travel through traffic. Would be nice to just get past-by.
    3. Least maintenance. No frequent visits to workshop for issues.
    4. Decent mileage. Daily run is not more than 8kms. So mileage doesn't really play an important role here. But I would love to have as less visits to the petrol pump as possible.
    5. Will keep the bike for at least 4-5 years. Or even more, say upto 10. So need a really reliable and well-built bike.
    6. No long rides or highway rides planned. It would be just some city commute.
    7. Last (and least important, but good to have) - Good pick-up. As I'm maturing from a RX, I would really love to have this. I don't intend to do take-off competitions, but a good pick-up does give a kick

After much contemplation, I decided to go with any bike that fulfills my needs within 100C to 150CC. I know there are many good bikes in 150CC category, but personally I find them bulky. And that makes these bikes difficult to manuver in thick traffic. I've expreience with friend's Pulsar 150 and I found it really difficult to handle in traffic.

    I've shortlisted the following:
    1. Yamaha SS 125
    2. Bajaj Discover 125ST
    3. Yamaha YBR125 or YBR 110

Other bikes I would like to consider:
    1. Suzuki Hayate
    2. Suzuki Slingshot Plus
    3. Bajaj Discover 150 and Discover 100
    4. TVS Star City 110
    5. Hero Achiever 150

    Please help me choose.
    Yamaha
+ve: Good built, VFM and good looking bikes
    -ve: Spares

    Honda
    +ve: Performance, smooth engine
    -ve: Overpriced, poor dealer expereince

    Suzuki
    +ve: Good engines, VFM
-ve: Spares and future of Suzuki uncertain

    Hero
    +ve: Spares, resale, mass appeal
    -ve: Not good built, overpriced

    Bajaj
+ve: spares, service and resale. Newer bikes are good looking
-ve: Built quality. Two years down-the-line reliability

Please know that these are relative comparisons and based on my experience with bikes.
Do let me know your thoughts guys! Any help is much appreciated.

Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Friend, ss125 is not recommended if your need is only city-commuting, as it has good top end compared to its low end. If budget permits, then Yamaha fz-s or Honda dazzler can be the best choice. But if you don't want to expence so much, then the other choices are: yamaha sz-r: good looks, good low end torque, affordable price and satisfactory mileage among 150ccs. Hero ignitor/honda stunner: both are more or less same, while the ignitor have some advantages like tubeless tires or digital display. And if you are looking for a simple looking family bike, hero achiever is a good bike. Though it looks small, it provides good combo of power (13.6ps) and mileage (48kmpl).

Go with Yamaha SS 125 with eyes closed. Best one among your selections.

I'd have recommended TVS Star city coz i own it and i'm pretty happy with that. But since you mentioned "Most 100/110CC bikes don't have disc brakes or better features. Which is why I'm having to look at the 125CC segment." the brakes do scare me and a lot of other people. Mileage is awesome - How ever you ride city/highway (sane riding) you're gonna get 65-70 for sure! its maintenance free, "Very" easy to handle(low speeds) , reliable and"not so" well built bike, Good for city commute, also you mentioned "I've been riding a Yamaha RX135 for the past 9 years or so". you will definitely get bored of that 110cc 8bhp engine 125cc and above is the best deal for you! Experts can help you there!

Thanks guys. So there are no 2 votes for any bike as of now. I will be TD (hopefully) the Bajaj 125ST today. I will keep you posted. The only reason I want to look at Bajaj is the lower initial cost, spare parts availability and good resale. Yes, I might have to sell the bike after 5 years or so.

                Why not the Pulsar 135LS??
Sure you are gonna love it. Have it too in the TD.
The limiter kicks in @11,500 rpm just within a second after the first shift..And, that's where the fun begins !! ;)

My choice would be 125 st,reason:handling, mileage, dirt cheap spares.Let me tell you this bike is a huge success in my place. The number of 125 st which I see when going out is just alarming.I don't think 125st is going to be discarded like bajaj's xcd, boxer etc.I would choose 125st over 135ls,discover 150.Although 135ls,disc150 is better in paper than 125st,125st is going strong now,I believe.

Go with the Discover 125 ST. Its light weight, quite good in handling, and reasonably good mileage. The new mono shock suspension is quite good. By the looks of the ride, Bajaj has done a very good job with upgrading the bike.

                        Re: 100/125/150 CC all welcome

Everybody seems to be over looking the fact that TS wants a bike with goid pick up. And to compete with an rx on that front is very very difficult.

Apart from that, the 125st seems like a good choice. But 135ls is more bang for buck.

Looking at the bikes you are choosing between I'd say your budget is between 60-75k. Assuming this, I'd like to say, the rtr160 also is vfm if you can extend your budget. Dual disc plus the best acceleration in its class.

Don't omit that vehicle. It meets all your specified needs to the dot.

Thanks guys. I know I'm asking a bit too much from the 100-150CC range. And I did forget to mention my budget. But later on, I thought that I'm ready to spend upto say 75K if the bike is VFM. By that I mean really VFM. For e.g. I found Honda and Hero bikes not that VFM.
On the other hand, Bajaj, Suzuki, Yamaha and TVS seem to be really VFM.

I think I'm going to have to remove some points like pick-up from my list of requirements - 1. because my running distance is too less and 2. because the range I'm targeting doesn't have good pick-up bikes.

Having said that, please keep suggesting guys!

Wise decision there, Discover 125st - 4 valve Dtsi engine its rev happy and fun to ride( read somewhere). Its also got some premium features! But why not P135??as neevarp16 suggested! It looks good suits well for your needs!

I think the P135 is not VFM. The price they are commanding is not worthy of the features they are offering. Just my thought though. I think the Discover150 is cheaper than the P135...
