  • Apache rtr 180 ABS or Honda dazzler ?

    Hello everyone,
This is my first post here. I am going to buy my own bike for the 1st time and i believe i am noob about bikes. So need some help and suggestions from you guys.
Let me tell you few things about myself. I am 28 yrs old, height 5f 10" and athletic build. I am from Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh
    My budget- upto 90k
my requirements- dont visit daily. I am at present at home preparing for higher education after my mbbs. So mostly remain at home. I love photography so love to travel my nearby places occasionally including different terrain farms,mountain/hilly,forest, river plains.
    - Though i dont like fast biking/cornering in city/traffic but love good pickup and some time love driving fast but below 100 kmph.
    - I do visit alone but also need to carry my mom and fiance to different places like market etc (so also want comfortable pillion seat, atleast for some distance)
    - of course, would love to have good mileage (atleast 50km/l, more is better), but as i dont visit much daily so i can compromise 40-50 km/l)
    - Reliable engine/bike
    - My dad will also use my bike sometimes
    - though i dont mind large tank but none in my family members including fiance like protruded belly

So considering above features my initially shortlisted bikes were-
    Honda dazzler,
    hero hunk,
    Yamaha fazer sports
    Yamaha fzs/fz16.
Personally don't bajaj bikes (except avenger) specially pulsar. I know its good bike but they have been so common everywhere. so no offences bajaj/pulsar guys.

I consider above list before searching in internet. But after reading different forums, reviews and specially here in xbhp reviews i narrowed my list to
Honda dazzler and i included TVS Apache 180 with ABS. I never even thought of TVS. In fact i used to think that TVS people can just make scooties but when i came to know
about apache 180 with ABS, I started loving this bike. They are providing quite good package for the price. Actually the ABS seems quite attractive, specially watching some youtube videos about rtr 180 ABS. As my registeration was not yet approved in xbhp so i could not ask anything earlier and i decided to try test ride bikes today morning.

I initially went to 1st TVS showroom (Balaji TVS) in my city (we have just 2 TVS showrooms here) and surprisingly they told me that they cant get RTR 180 with ABS. In fact none here in this city will be able to bring this bike with ABS as there is no service for the ABS verion in this city. I asked that if you can bring one ABS version on customer's order ? and they again said none in bilaspur (my city) may bring that. and if i want i can try to get from the showrooms situated in our capital city Raipur (120 km from here) I dont know what he meant or was his problem. So i decided to go the 2nd (Chandra TVS). They had already 160 and 180 versions but not the one with ABS. But he said they can can bring one with ABS on my demand. Accepted. They offer me the test drive of one rtr 180 (non abs) and i really liked its handling. Though i rode for just a km that too in bad road withing traffic so could not taste the speed but still it was good experienced. I am getting 180 ABS for 90 k (on road price) and i think its good.

Then i went to Yamaha. Though the salesman was quite busy in his cell phone he could afford my testdrive on Fazer with handing a petrol bottle as probably it has no fuel in its tank. nevermind. Bike was good but was bit uncomfortable as when i turn handle, its fairing remain steady. I mean like inside an auto, driver just moves handle inside and auto turn. so it was making me quite confused. Pickup was bit slower than rtr as it was 153cc. It has also kick and electric start like RTR and it cost around 87k.

Then i went to Hero (all these showrooms are next to each other here) I wanted to try hunk atleast. They tried to make one available but one hunk had battery discharged, other one had fuel or something leaking, and 3rd one has no pressure in rear tyre so finally i came out with a pamphlet of hunk.

Lastly i went to honda for dazzler. It cost around 79k (if i remember correctly what the sales person said) but as it had been lunch time so he could not provide a dazzler for test ride.

So with all these experience i am leaning to RTR 180 ABS. Still i want to know frank opinions of all you guys. And still i am open to all option within my budget 90k. Again guys let me say i am very inexperienced person regarding bikes and all so please consider that.

Check, if they are servicing the ABS properly. Though ABS doesnt always needs to be attended. But just try to know, if they can take care of any issue in future, or can get mechs from Raipur to handle any issue.
Any way, gud desicion, ride safe.
But one question, would your father be comfortable riding in those racing position?

Bro from the req above I can say that FZ suits you the best and even parents can ride it with absolute comfort!

The other bike is Dazzler, because it has dual disc and mono shocks, It has good city torques and good pillion comfort, mileage of 50+kmpl.

I don't think RTR180 ABS /Non ABS suits you because it's a small bike your height is 5.10"ft + riding position is semi sports so your dad won't find it comfortable.

ABS is mostly to avoid skidding situation, but the features of ride and chances you poses above are in favor of any non ABS models.

Go with Dazzler it has best to be with a Family needs.

RTR is sporty and speedy machine...

You can check out Impulse too...as you mentioned you go to off terrains too.

If you can rethink on your hateVs Need NS200 is perfect choice today in 1L budget. Comfortable too. mileage is around 35-40kmpl.

Thank you somen for your inputs. I did consider fz as i like yamaha bikes but as i mentioned earlier its pot belly shaped tank is repelling me and its very much no-no from my family side also. More over as i heard it has same mileage (around 45) as 180 cc apache with ABS. After i had a test drive for both the bikes i found apache quite comfortable than fz. Though ABS is believed to be more beneficial for fast riders, having an additional safety feature, always goes to plus side (if not negative). I have ABS in my car, though i dont drive my car fast too i think many a time, its ABS has saved me and my car itself from minor and major damages. In my place, you just go outside the city and you will find muddy, skiddy roads almost 8 months in a year, specially when i go to photograph in outskirts (where i often visit for vistas). Here you cant go with even 30-40 kmph, so i think having ABS will definitely help me.
Yeah dazzler was my 1st choice before i rode apache but now i have ordered for apache 180 with abs.
Its just the reliability of TVS engine and parts what i am concerned of because i am the first in my whole family to get a TVS product. But as you know until one tastes something himself, can't be assured of that.
Well i don't 'hate' pulsar, definitely it would be very good bike thats why we see so many pulsars on road, but that thing itself became a negative point for it and i dont want to add another pulsar in front of my home. just personal view.
Hope that my decision of shifting into TVS from hero honda and yamaha, would be well suited for me atleast for next 5 years.
Anyways Thanks once again somen for your valuable suggestions.

Yes smbit. The TVS people in Bilaspur themselves told me that they would not be able to handle any serious problem with ABS, but it can be in Raipur. So as you said (and probably true) ABS won't need that frequent servicing, so i can go Raipur occasionally (which is about 120 km from my city) and if i need. So i think thats ok.
ps- as far as my dad is concerned, i think he wont mind riding my bike "occasionally''
and thank you for your concern bhaina.

RTR 180 is in deed a good bike compare to FZ or Dazzler. But it's comfortable then FZ is heard for the first time. Altough you are 5.10"ft you found it even better!!

ABS is anytime a good thing to have....

                    Honda Dazzler

                    Pros : Super refined engine
                    : Slick gears.
                    : Fuel economy 50-60 km/lt
: dual disc and monocross ensure better braking and smooth ride..

                    Cons
: Feels bit underpowered in segment
: Looks do not appeal to all. ( in your case u may neglect this )

                    Apache

Pros : Super fun to ride due to its revvy and punchy engine
: Superior pickup and top end speed
                    : Throaty exhaust
: ABS ensures ultimate braking in wet roads

Cons : Riding position in forward and stresses a bit in wrist and lower back (in my case it did )
: Tyres are a letdown ( change them to better ones after they wear off to Michelin or pirelli)
Carb Tuning made easy (Thanks Sibun !)

Yes somen, strange for me too because i heard everywhere about the compromised sitting/lowish handles in apache but don't know why i really liked the sitting and handling. Is it because 2012 model has some improvements ? The TVS salespersons were also telling me about reduced vibration in higher speed and some improvement in handling. Moreover i could ride for just 1-2 kms in crowded road, so hope my views for apache are not illusion..!
ps- it can't be illusion as i rode all other bikes in same road for same distance as all the showrooms are located in same lane.
I said fz bit uncomfortable because i think as i have been riding non-fairing bikes the fairing of fz/fazer was uncomfortable for me. When i rode fazer i found handling uncomfortable. When i turn the handle, only handle could be turned and not the fairing/front shell. It was causing bit confusion, may be after some ride one may get accustomed.

@ Rohit- Though dazzler's look is not very attractive but its not that bad, in fact decent.

No doubt RTR is a good handler!

I guess not, But confirm this in ownership thread. May be you are more towards sports position. But In city traffic any sports position/semi sports would make you regret later.

Take a TR of the selected bikes for more than 2Kms. and then decide. Yes new RTR has reduced vibs as compare to previous ones.

Fairing issue is something which you will get adjusted too with some rides on it. We have an illusion of seeing headlights moving with handle, where as we really don't judge the turning with headlights /fairing moving. It's just an illusion, will go away with time.

RTR 2012 has more advantage over old one without doubt, Stablity & Vibration is the main thing though! .... And yes Engine temp too ...

How , Hundreds of Apache owner ride it with comfort including me ? its like saying R1 or S1kRR isnt a comfy as you were Riding Honda CT 100 or Unicorn in past...

The other bike is Dazzler, because it has dual disc and mono shocks, It has good city torques and good pillion comfort, mileage of 50+kmpl.

now when you have said about Dazzler I would also like to mentioned the power & torque here compare to other choice (RTR) ?

I don't think RTR180 ABS /Non ABS suits you because it's a small bike your height is 5.10"ft + riding position is semi sports so your dad won't find it comfortable.
[B] Hold On! My Friend with 5'9 Ride's Apache very comfortably, in fact there sitting position fits very well as they have to lean & go back top of the seat. so again it's just an Illusion

ABS is mostly to avoid skidding situation, but the features of ride and chances you poses above are in favor of any non ABS models.

Again a Illusion or wrong information.

Go with Dazzler it has best to be with a Family needs. My Dad Ride's RTR, I dont know why people think DAD means some 70 or 80 year old person with back problem or fan of M80 ? comm'on Dad can be the one who loves to Ride who know's more bike then us & who has ridden more bike then us (Traditionally too ). So would like to know from T.C. if his dad cannot handle RTR ?

RTR is sporty and speedy machine... True but very few point ?

You can check out Impulse too...as you mentioned you go to off terrains too.

Some time you call a family concern & now you are giving him an option for Impulse ? how it justify ?

If you can rethink on your hateVs Need NS200 is perfect choice today in 1L budget. Comfortable too. mileage is around 35-40kmpl.

On the other hand you said Dazzler coz of Mileage of 50+ now NS with 35-40 Can also do ?
No Hard Feeling Someone bro! But I just find that you always confuse other member, which I feel make them hard to choose, be True & genuine with them... @ T.S. I am not saying you to go for RTR only, there are other bike's too but thinking deep & pointing every bike's positiveness (about you like) make's hard too choose but as I have bold out the Reason why not always listen to other's, so get the one which you really need & your heart say !
