re: A Bike for only Touring under a budget of 1 lakh to 1.7 lakh Rupees

Most highways have 80 kmph speed limits for cars, with even less limits for bikes. The problem is people : once you do 100, you wanna do 150. After 150, you wanna see how 200 feels like. You've ridden a HD 750 at 185 kmph, now do the same on a sports bike or a sports tourer. You'll feel the difference. The difference is in stability, acceleration and braking. That's what's needed on Indian roads: anticipation, evasion, and acceleration.

All said and done, there's plenty of choices nowadays, unlike in the 90's and 2000's. With even scooters doing Ladakh and Leh, pushing one particular bike as the best is childish, and ignorant.

I have a soft spot for the silver bullet 500, but the allure of acceleration got me the CBR 250, a bike with more mileage, more control and 2-3 secs better 0-100 kmph. Most people, especially in rural areas, don't even know the CBR 250 exists. For them, a bike is a lifestyle, a ego boost.

Why we are not considering KTM Duke 390 MY2017. At least from picture i looks amazing. Only problem will be 13 Ltr petrol tank but still you get 200 km range which is good for Indian Highway. Plus it has reliable engine, Niggle free(User can contribute more for this). But only thing is we may have to wait for few more months before it is launched. I am also eagerly waiting for it to upgrade from my current Apache 180 ABS. Baby CBR does appeal me currently, but I have decided to wait till Duke390 MY2017 gets launched.

nIL2w - I heard Duke 390 gives 30 km per litre fuel efficiency at 100 -110 km/hr speeds. Moreover tell me at top gear what rpm duke 390 reaches & stay at 100 km/hour for hours? RE 350? hey do you mean RE Standard 350 UCE? Friends,My questions above may look silly. The reason is i have explored my pulsar 220 till 130 km/hr for a short stretch in highway. But eventhough I am young(age-34), I do feel staying at edge or even riding at more than 9000 rpm for hours would be mentally tiring.Any bike which suit almost all my requirements i have stated at first would be fine. Kindly suggest me bikes which can reach & stay at 100 km/hr for hours at rpm less than 8000 rpm in top gear..

I want to ask something to you in case of RE problems :-

1. You are saying that you had bitter problems - can you say what/identify ? - that might help others to rectify and also help to me so that I might prevent them in future.
Constant tappet adjustment, every 2K kms. Oil leaks, brakes are generations behind the current scenario, tube tyres are a pain to fix in case of a puncture, vibrations even put tractors to shame, low cruising speed which is a high risk for highway runs, not pocket friendly because of atleast two services a month and the hilarious prices quoted by parts dealers.

2. You are saying about oil leakage - is it the new UCE or the AVL engine - mine 350 TB UCE does not have any oil leakage #even though I do the service by my own and still did not see any oil leakage ~ km done till now 900 km .
I owned a 1982 CI, a 1994 AVL and my brother owned a 2014 UCE. You might be a lucky chap to have not had any oil leakage problems! I service the bikes by myself too, and I'd put around 1,75,000 kms on both my bikes. And the SVC's across the country for Enfield stinks in terms of after sales service and everything else inbetween.

On the other hand you are saying that 250r is a mile muncher - robust built - can take lot of abuse - has enough power for highway numerous SVC and fairly pocket friendly when comes to maintenance - Isn't RE TB 350/500 ?(bigger tank) I am not including other RE .
I don't understand the point here, so you're saying bigger the tank, the better mile muncher? Does that mean lorries are better mile munchers than any vehicle on the road? Since they carry around 200ltrs of diesel?

I mean it has a 550-600 km range of petrol / iron built / if you love beating/kicking your bike then RE is the best 1 kick and punch and you are in heaven / 19.8 bhp for 350 and 27.2 bhp for 500 isn't that good(not best) for highway / local SVC and DIY is the best for RE
(Iron built means heavier, which in turn reduces the cruising capability significantly when ridden without stressing the engine, one kick and punch? Are we still talking about bikes here? I've been doing all services on my CBR since purchase, including throttle body cleaning and timing chain adjustments, only big jobs like shim replacement or clutch replacement are done by the SVC, so again, it all depends upon the owners interest, any job is doable as long as you are willing to.)

- which can't be in case of 250 / and about pocket friendly - any bike from 50cc to 2000 cc if maintained well is pocket friendly
Please do some research to back up your facts, we also own a Harley Iron 883. Your above point is just plain blind.

` correct me if I am wrong / and about the ancient technology you are saying which is 100 % true but don't we all love RE and if there is any problem with the ANCIENT technology then I hope 350/500 wont be on sale ~ Right ?
RE has a cult value in India very similar to what Surf Excel has. RE tech has not moved past the 1900's (do a little research on their engine construction and how it has evolved) The 350/500 are still on sale because people still buy it. The Conti and the Himalayan are however leagues ahead of the TB or any other product in the RE lineup. BTW, have you heard of "liquid cooled engines"? Just give it a look.

/ and in case of break down " abe yeah bullte hain koi servicing ki zarurat nahin hain " if it is the moto of people then my friend even HH Splendor will break down too / and about Continental GT - It is a cafe racer not a tourer - which people tend to forget .. If anyone wants a touring motorcycle from RE department , they have already made TB series.
This i agree, the Continental is in no way a tourer in stock form, however with handle bar mods and a bash plate, makes a good tourer. On the breakdown aspect, first of all, why would i want my bike to break down? Do you even want me to get started on RE's inherent electrical issues? Please, again, do some research before stating facts that might seem very true to you.

Sorry it might sound that I am a RE fan ~ well yes , I myself have 350 TB ~ so it is my curiosity to know why you have not included TB in here . But please correct me if I am wrong in any sentences/words as I am always a learner !
Replies in bold.

Now, my intention was not to start a brand war, but you seem fairly new to biking and the TB. I've experienced almost all of the RE prducts and even the Conti, which is the best built bike in their lineup has issues. My point is, why invest in something that's going to be sitting half the time in the SVC, that will take you slower, and leave your hands and feet numb at the end of the day, when you can invest in something that takes you from A to B, in comfort, without vibrations and probably will outlast you?

I'd ask you to wait till the third batch at least. So KTM can work out any niggles in the first batches. No doubt the Duke is a very capable machine, but the quality of parts used somewhat leaves a sour aftertaste. We've seen 390's do Raid de Himalaya, so no doubt about their tolerance to abuse.

At top gear, 100 comes at 6.2K RPM for the Honda.
Also look at the Pulsar AS/NS/RS 200 (though you cannot compare refinement), 100 comes at 7K RPM. Parts are dirt cheap, and these engines are ripped off from KTM (atleast the lower half without the DOHC) and will take abuse. (My younger brother picked up an AS 200 last year, it's VFM). But if you consider the AS/NS wait till the newer FI models come out, sometime in the first quarter of 2017.

Oh, BTW, also keep a look out for Bajaj's own homegrown Dominar 400.

Yes, Pulsar RS200 is in my choice list, waiting for the test ride to be done. What about AS 200 seat height, would it be a upgrade for ex-pulsar 220 rider?

Upgrade not in terms of power, but upgrade in terms of quality, comfort and tech. The NS/AS will resume production post the 2017 BS regulations. AFAIK they're coming up with FI and exhaust changes. Will resume production in the first quarter of 2017. Seat height is not much of an issue. The RS is a good one too, but i shied away from it because of the reputation bajaj has for half fairings, let alone full ones!

fullmoon I'd like to add my two cents here. You seem to be covered on bike suggestions, so I'll just give you a small technical, um.. education, I guess?

For the range between 1-2.2 lakh, you are looking at single cylinder engines. Now, the problem with single cylinders - no matter who makes them, is always refinement. No matter how hard anyone tries, the single cylinder hooligan like character will show up in the engine. Having only one cylinder essentially puts more strain on the engine to produce the power or torque required to move a bike. Now, when you take such a set up and make it bigger, your problems will only grow more. Proof of this is the very fact that most - if not all - the superbikes you see today are equipped with at least 2 cylinders.

Now, I'm not asking you to consider a bike with two cylinders. Singles will fit your bill perfectly, no doubt about that. But, which bike you choose will obviously be governed by at least some of these factors - looks, reliability, quality, VFM, ease of maintenance, practicality, etc. I wont even tell you which of these factors you need to consider - that's all you too. What you should consider is this - getting a bigger single cylinder may just prove to be counter productive to your need for touring. Big singles are rowdy. They vibrate with pleasure, heat up in passion, spit oil in anger and whatnot. So, if you are picking a single, go for a smaller engine that does everything you need.

My personal pick would be the CBR 250R. It's a no headache, fuel and fly bike. I can't comment on the availability of spares in your region, but there's good availability near mine. It has decent low end grunt, good manners at the speeds you have mentioned and is by far the most refined single 250 I've ridden. The fairing makes it cut through air better at speed - reducing the effort you need to put in to stay on your bike. You simply can't go wrong with it. It's not crazy like the Dukes and isn't made like a Bullet, but it's a Honda. These guys invented superbikes. You can trust them with this bike too.
Don't matter what it is: Touring; Racing; Commuting. All I know is, I belong on the saddle.

Rides : Honda CB Twister(Feb 2011 - Present) | TVS Apache RTR 180 ABS(Sept 2012 - May 2016) | Honda CBR250R C-ABS Repsol(March 2017 - Present)

Unfortunately, when Suzuki Inazuma slashed a whopping 1 lakh rs in their parallel twin cyl. engine bike, i didn't had the ability to go for even finance options.

again now, as you said, "marked in bold", considering my speed requirement is not huge, why can't i go for Suzuki Gixxer SF, FI variant which i can use it for two or three years and saving moolah(money) for a future parallel twin cylinder.. makes sense naa? that way i would not spend more on fuel, maintenance and even in the initial price also when compared to a bullet 500 or cbr 250 r. the only problem is when u try to reach 100 and stay for say, an hour there, i may need to stay in some approx. 8500 rpm..

3) Mileage

The CBR fits these perfectly - if you want the upgrade. If you are willing to settle for a sub 200cc motorcycle(which isn't really upgrading), you already have the Unicorn - which according to me, is no better or worse than the Gixxer SF FI. I mean, the Gixxer will cost you about 1.15 lakhs OTR, right? It still produces the same 15 odd BHP that a Unicorn does, the Unicorn has a much more refined engine compared to the Gixxer and biggest plus point of all - you already have the Unicorn. Why set yourself back by 1 lakh if you will just get another 150cc? Save that money, invest it and get your p-twin a year or two earlier. The fairing is good for touring - no doubt about that. But exactly how fast will you be going on the Gixxer, for the fairing to make a difference?

IMHO, if you are looking at an "upgrade", get the CBR. If you just want another bike alongside your Uni, the Gixxer Fi is a good choice.

On second thought, I have to add another thing from a technical standpoint. You wish to save money on the initial investments by choosing a bike of lower capacity and also on consequent costs of mileage and maintenance. TBH, I looked through the Gixxer and CBR threads - I didn't find a significant difference in cost of maintenance. The CBR's oil need is the only thing that might cost you more every time. Mileage wise, if you ride the Gixxer at 100kmph all day, I'd wager a mileage of less than 40kmpl. The same thing on the CBR is bound to get about 35kmpl. While the figures are lesser on first examination, if you dig deeper you will know one thing - the Gixxer is still a smaller engine, producing a lot less power and torque. Riding long and hard on the Gixxer will only translate to higher maintenance costs because, let's face it, you are ultimately straining the bike a lot more than you would a CBR. The CBR will take a lot lesser of a beating in this situation.

Of course, my entire argument is based off the assumption that you will be riding at 100kmph all day long. If you'd make that 70 or 80kmph, the Gixxer should be fine. Then again, so will the CBR. You can see what I'm getting at.

P.S: A word of advice on investing in any new bike being launched in India - beware of the first lot niggles. The FI on the Gixxer will be a new addition, which the mechanics at the SVC will take time getting acquainted with. Same goes for any FI from the Bajaj stable and especially the Dominar funk they will release soon. Best to be cautious with these if you really wanna save the Moolah for the future. Stick to the tested and proven vehicles out there that SVC mechs are comfortable with.

Hi,
I believe most of the variants have been discussed , but Mahindra Mojo. So if talking about cruising ability and vibrations, Mojo stands tall with it refined engine and good touring ability, 21 litres tank, upright seating posture.

A).
Its advantage ---- > "As the whole process is actuated by hydraulic pressure at engine start, there is no need for service or adjustment. Another advantage is cheaper operation, as there is no need for service and charges associated with tappet maintenance. Usually hydraulic tappets survive through the whole of the engine life without any service requirements."
Its diasadvantge ---- > "Generally, hydraulic tappets are more sensitive to engine oil quality and frequency of oil changes, as carbon sludge and residues may easily lock up the tappets or block oil channels, making the clearance setting ineffective. This has negative impact especially on the engine camshaft and valves due to excessive wear if the clearance setting is not working correctly. As mentioned, one may avoid this by using the manufacturer-recommended grade of engine oil, and by not exceeding the prescribed oil change interval" - so Engine oil of manufacture recommended is the key point of prolonged life - which in my case I use only the liquid gun instead of Motul.

Oil leaks - I am tired of asking " HOW COME " - if it happens just change the o-rings and the gasket of the specified oil leak are - it has to get solved yaar !! Yes I am lucky I dont have any problem till now 1500 km .

Tube tyres - I am making a point about THUNDERBIRD 350/500 " WHERE WE CAN EASILY EXHANGE IT WITH ALLOYS AND TUBLESS TYRES" - The place B.O.C RE - they have told me in future I can upgrade to TUBLESS setup - so how come there be the problem with TB series ????? If you take whole RE then the point is invalid as TB has the option !

Vibration - I don't feel the virbation (without gloves) even if the speed is above 100 kmph - maybe i have fat hands or maybe my nerves are damage - but PERSONALLY I dont feel any damn vibration !!!!! - I dont know about other but I dont / well not with this bike every bike I have ridden I did not felt any vibration !!

Low cruising speed - Well I ride constantly at 110-120 kmph in the highway(3-4 hrs) - so how come it be said low cruising speed ?????? if you say how come I am able to hold at that speed with all the VIBRATION - the answer is above.

Not Pocket friendly service - I buy the OEM oil and filter which cost me only Rs.870 - Air filter/brakes have not changed as it is just 1500 km - In future I might update this sentence - and other service as you have told I do it own my own - and about service frequency , I do it only at 3000 km or if the service due indicator starts blinking - so how come 2 service a month ?? only if you ride more km in a month - that means completing 3000 km in a month - even if that the case then any bike has to be serviced by your idea - which is normal - am I not right ??

Parts dealer - I buy the parts only from the SVC - so I have no idea about the parts dealer price quotation - this might be true in your words which I will accept.

A) .Its Stinks - If all the service centre of RE stinks then how come " As far as ASCs are concerned I have heard a great deal about Secunderabad ASC.

But if you are not satisfied with their diagnosis you can look up 'Pavan' at 'The enfield zone', which is a garage near Raidurg 500008, Hyd. He has been given good reviews by many Enfield bike owners. Can call him up and describe the issue, if its a known issue he might be able to help you know the reason and fix for it. " as said by my fellow friend rugved ?? may be the place you have gave for servicing might be the problem , you can try any other service centre too / or go to the local mechanic / or as you said you do all you service on your own then why go to the SVC ? you have the knowledge of fixing the difficult problem then why you need to go to SVC - RE are the easiest to fix / CBR are much critical - am I not right ?
And secondly you are saying that RE service centre sucks - so may I presume that Honda is the best ?? if that the case how come the HORNET 160R users are facing so much starting problems in the vehicles after their 1st service ? - Look man every service centre sucks in India - even if it is HONDA / BAJAJ / HERO / RE / SUZUKI / YAMAHA - any , and on the other hand if you are lucky to find a good service centre where your problem gets solved then go to that svc only - correct me if I am wrong.

Q). I don't understand the point here, so you're saying bigger the tank, the better mile muncher? Does that mean lorries are better mile munchers than any vehicle on the road? Since they carry around 200ltrs of diesel?

A). For this question lets take the comaprison of duke 200 and RE TB 350 fuel/500 tank range - my answer will get prooved . And I am not insulting CBR fuel tank capacity I am just saying RE too have the fuel range capacity - so I am not making any comaprision - just saying a point

Please do some research to back up your facts, we also own a Harley Iron 883. Your above point is just plain blind.

A). Iron built - for which 28 NM torque for 350 and 41 NM torque for 500 -- has been given to pull the monster ! - And what research I have to do ? please clarify !
" Harley Iron 883 " - congrats !

A). " The 350/500 are still on sale because people still buy it " - Because they love it and for which cbr250/150 may look old age - but RE won't and Honda isn't bringing any new 150 and 250 CBR so I rest my case here - If you are saying Honda has it on its plate - then why not bring it ?????? - if they bring it it will be a huge succcessssssss for Honda - am I not right ?
"Have you heard liquid cool engine " - I owned KTM DUKE 200 and Pulsar RS 200 - so I know what liquid cool engine is , thank you for your GK !
"RE has a cult value in India very similar to what Surf Excel has. RE tech has not moved past the 1900's" - why change when no one is complaining (general people)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q). This i agree, the Continental is in no way a tourer in stock form, however with handle bar mods and a bash plate, makes a good tourer. On the breakdown aspect, first of all, why would i want my bike to break down? Do you even want me to get started on RE's inherent electrical issues? Please, again, do some research before stating facts that might seem very true to you

A). "BREAK DOWN" - please specify your breakdown - there are 1000 meaning of breakdown !
" RE's inherent electrical issues " - Yes I want you to please state me the issues !
Yes I will do the research only if your provide me the breakdown issues !!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't intend to add fuel to the fire on Enfeild vs Others etc. I do own a Conti GT & read on this thread about back problems from touring on the GT! & my response is only on that particular point. Click image for larger version

I just went to my parents in Jaipur & back 2nd week on Nov.

Few limited points I'd like to make:
- upto a 100 GT definitely holds on it own without a hitch. 90kph it can do for days on end without breaking any sweat.
- at 110ish the bike is fine rumbling along at 3.5-4krpm 5th gear but definitely feels it's reaching its limits. But the lack of windscreen makes you hold on for dear life OR get into a nice Cafe-Chest on Tank pose .
- at 120odd the bike is definitely struggling, it can still hold it but it's crying to get back to 100.
- anything beyond 100 is actually going into unsafe territory, many a times I encountered potholes out of no-where. Enter Rajasthan & a cow could simply appear from thin air! and almost banged into one a very close call. And offcourse one truck almost pinned me off road since he decided to change lanes suddenly!!!
- Only reason I'd see for an upgrade would be to hold better stability, better Braking & better handling at 100kmph & not necessarily for higher top-speed coz it's just not safe enough on majority of the roads, potholes for sure but many times undulations in the road makes it much more dangerous at higher speeds.

Also it's now 20k kms on the GT, I've not had a single major issue yet. Some places minor oil spreads at the head not oil leaks. The most mentioning point No rattles no parts falls off & bike is Bone-Stock which I rarely find in Enfields.
Ride your Heart out!!!
