As you said, some points are the stupidest I have ever seen.

          1. Under Throttle - point no. 4 - There is no point 4. However point 3 is as amazing - Use the throttle correctly to gain better ground clearance

          2. under engine braking - point no. 2 - Because of the lack of brake light, only engine brake when riding in groups

What they meant to say that if you engine brake, your brake light does not glow so if you are riding in a group, avoid engine braking and use it only when you ride solo. The tip is WRONG.

One more hilarious tip for bikers -

Your engine life is increased through gear usage

Need to check what those guys are smoking

You will understand this point if you have ever driven a Honda Civic over a high speed breaker. I guess they want you to employ a similar technique when riding bikes like HD Superlow / Iron.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

In case of Honda Civic .. yes i agree... it needs to be done. Dont know about HD though... is anyone offering a test ride to check for this factor

Sir, do you mean to say that you can increase ground clearance of a bike by using throttle?

                      • Check this tip

Don't always use the clutch for changing up gears.

Don't use engine braking too much on two-strokes as the bike may seize if it's overdone. This is completely wrong statement.

Don't stray from the recommended settings. Wrong again as we need to vary pressures in rains.

Look to one side of oncoming lights. and dont look at your path.

Yes, the 'Instantaneous Ground Clearance'(IGC) can be changed using throttle and proper application of front and rear brakes.

Originally posted by shrinathrao View Post

I will let show you the research papers of my EUREKA moment. But For now, explanation in short:

Points marked with * are valid only for bikes.

If you feel the oncoming speed breaker is too high for your bike/car, follow the following steps.

                            Step 1:
Slow down to the speed you want to take the speed breaker at, BEFORE you reach the speed breaker. Use both brakes for optimum effectiveness.

                            Step 2*:
Tap the foot brake gently just as you start climbing the speed breaker slope. This will lift the front end up ever so slightly and give your front forks more travel to encounter the sudden increase in slope.

                            # When your front wheel reaches on top of the speed breaker, the forks(struts) which were compressed due to the upwards slope will need a little time(>half a second maybe) to get back to stock height. At this time, your IGC will be lower than the GC mentioned on the Brochure.

Step 3: To avoid #, when you reach the top, throttle gently as this will mean that the torque of the engine will be used to assist the spring/struts/fork to come up faster, thereby increasing your IGC.

P.S.: The concept of IGC is similar to concept of Instananeous Fuel economy (IFE). eg.
                            1. Your IFE is zero kmpl when idling at the signal because you travelled zero meters for some drops of petrol burnt.
                            2. Your IFE is infinity if you turn shift to Neutral and turn off the engine while coming down a slope since you travelled several meters without using a single drop of petrol (division by 0)
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I have never driven a Honda Civic, like EVER. I dont see myself driving one anytime in future either. So can someone throw more light on this please. I am the curious kind

I think the authors of "Tips for You and Your Bike" and that of "You and the Road" are two different people.
Every point in "You and the road" is a good point and is syntactically right while almost every point in "Tips for You and Your Bike" is boisterously merry !

Smooth gear changing gives better acceleration
Obtain better acceleration with swift gear selection
Do not pin the throttle to the stop
Use the throttle correctly to gain better ground clearance

                                EUREKA indeed !!
But I still don't see any need for it. But maybe that's cause I haven't encountered moments where I felt like bothering myself with so much physics especially at speeds that low :P
