Riding in the Rains: The Art of Safe Riding

Allow me to quote a few lines:
    1. Hydroplaning is the result of your tires moving fast across a wet surface - so fast that they do not have sufficient time to channel that moisture away from the center of the tire. The result is that the tire is lifted by the water away from the road and all traction is thus lost. Skimming stones across a pond or water skiing are great examples. The tyres on the bike work like skis and the rider has no control over direction. Tread design, tread depth, weight of motorcycle, tire pressure and depth of water all play a part in determining at what speed the tire will begin to hydroplane.

In the event of hydroplaning, do not apply your brakes or try to steer the bike in any direction but the straight-ahead. If you know that you are going to be riding in the rain, add some 3-5 psi of pressure in your tires. Increasing the tire pressure makes its contact patch smaller. In other words, it increases the weight per square inch of the contact patch so that it takes more 'uplift' by water to cause hydroplaning. And just as increasing pressure makes the contact patch smaller, it also tends to spread out the tread grooves which, in turn, makes it easier to squeeze out water away from the contact patch.

2.Brake gently, using more of the rear brake than the front (just the opposite of what you would do in the dry). Keep checking your brakes for effectivity when riding in heavy rain or through deep water.

Rest everything is pretty much alright... but this does not mean that riding while its raining is not fun Neither does it mean that you have to ride extremely slow in the wet
Well i really thought that reducing tyre pressures increased your grip!! This might be a different thought process....might have to dig deep into it...
Anyways had a good highway dash at 120-140 kmph in heavy rain today on the highway and felt like GOD!!!... It was scary sometimes when ur rear wobbles but feels relaly fantastic when everyone else drives at 40-60

Don't be too hard on him. He posted whatever he thought was correct and so others have already corrected him. He has also accepted that whatever he had posted was wrong so no point in bashing him now.

              As for advice...
              1) If you don't like riding slow then you could reduce your tyre air pressure a bit. It'll give you the extra surface area you need while braking.

              2) Use the front brake very gradually since its much more likely to lock the wheel.

              3) Be weary of potholes and don't ride fast unless you know the road (like vishwas sir said)

              4) Be extra careful while turning on blind corners because if some vehicle's stuck and you see it at the last moment, emergency braking or swerving can be pretty tricky.

              5) Ride slow.

              6) I guess you already know this but the road is at its slipperiest when it *just* starts raining as the water mixes with the oil and debris on the road. Takes a few minutes of rain to wash all this sludge away and then its much safer.

That's all i can think off..
@ vkavadia - nice to see that u accepted ur fault gracefully... but i request you to edit your post so that if a guy somehow lands directly on that page should not get misinformed.
see you at next g2g with proper tyre pressure

              • Nothing much in Lonar apart from the crator. 440kms from Pune. Not a single decent retaurant as well. You will have to stay in Lodge. There is one bang opposite the bus stand which is decent.

There is an MTDC Hotel bang in front of the Crater. Food there is decent+, view is awesome.. I will post a picture soon. In a bit of a hurry now. You can trek to the bottom of the crater right down to the lake if you are the adventurous types.

btw, did anyone know that if a fibre pannel is over tightened, it cracks!.

I attempted to fix an old rattle by removing the rubber bushing and tightening the part directly to the metal anchor. obviously i wasn't dumb so i used thick metal washers to assist. but i guess i wasnt smart enough and i over tightened the bolts.
result? cracked side pannel and the rattle is worse than ever.

tip for diy:- never attempt to remove an rattle by over tightening the pannel. it might crack and result in a worse condition

@RR I have a deal for you... You can use my bike... but replace the FR-RH indicator(Rs.145) and the front fairing(Rs.1300) regardless of whether you drop it or not (This will be rent.. I broke this yesterday on an off-road ride and apart from these... the bike is in tip-top condition ).

But before we seal the deal. Do you need the bike for the entire weeks or for weekends only? Also, I will need any simple 100cc bike for commuting in return* .

                            *Further conditions apply

I need it for a single day. Rs 1445 is too high for a day unless if it means that paying that amount permits me to return u a battered bike back without having to pay for it :P
