Ah Right ! Plan is shelved for the time.. Waiting for GT250R, KTM.
R15 will still keep giving me wet dreams though!

Also alternativerly have been planning to switch my ZMA with some gentleman's R15 V1 for a week to get a feel before i take the plunge. Me and my ZMA are ready, only thing is- i havent found the the gentleman yet

Technically a car's oil can be used for motorcycles as well provided they are of the same grade.
Though bikes have a tendency to break the oil much more faster than a car.
a full synthetic though would approx. perform the same on bike & car due to better quality & viscosity

In a nut shell both oils are almost exactly equivalent except for some minor alterations here & there

AFAIK there is no 15w50 FS bike engine oil from Shell. If this is something new then I am not aware.

Friendly advice : DON'T BUY SHELL HELIX FOR YOUR BIKE. IT IS A CAR ENGINE OIL.

Anant I was told about shell advanced ultra which is for 4 stroke bike engines.

Hence the oil needs to have such properties that it lubricates the moving parts, cools the clutch AND (most important) does not make the clutch slip. Oils for a motorcycle engine with a dry clutch are different as well.

In a car engine, the engine oil and transmission oil are different because both these components are independent of each other. Hence generally it is a bad idea to use a car oil in a bike engine. It will usually cause ur clutch to slip and wear out prematurely.

Ride Plans for Saturday, 19th November, 2011:

Me and a couple of friends are riding to Amby Valley. Pace will be substantially fast so i request participants to think before joining. All gear/documentation rules apply to those from XBHP. I cannot insist on the documentation rules with others riding with me but rest assured they will be wearing proper riding gear.

Time to meet is 6am at Chandni Chowk. You can rendezvous with Roger there. I will be joining up with the group at Dehu Road.

Speeds are expected to be in excess of 100kmph at all times. So please do think about what kind of ride you want to have (Stressing this point because everyone will not be comfortable at elevated speeds). All are welcome to join in though.

I always thought that oils did not need to be different for different vehicles apart from the grade, viscosity, etc. since both the vehicles have an engine with moving parts that needs to be lubricated. Thanks for educating me guys

What Antz says is correct. Helix is primarily for Cars; however, the one for which you have provided a link is for motorbikes. That you can use.

SPOT ON..using car engine oil in your bike may lead to excessive clutch slippage..especially if you use a synthetic oil.

Also, if anyone has done the Pune Vadodara route it would be great if I could have some suggestions and directions about the route, road conditions and all.

It takes you to Thane via Palm Beach road.
From Thane, head towards Hotel Fountain (on NH8), some part of this stretch of road is filled with potholes.
Once on NH8, there could be some traffic due to road widening and flyover work, this will continue for some distance (I guess till you get close to Manor).
Once past Manor its a beautiful 4 lane road with lots of curves.
Once you enter Gujarat, please be careful of animals sitting or standing on the highway (specially when you are passing some town).
Mostly the road is great, except for a few sections where flyover/bridge repair work is in progress.

Try to leave as early as possible from Pune and cross Mumbai before the rush hour starts.

Available in India in viscosity grade: SAE J 300 10W-40. The formulations meet: API SM and JASO MA2.

So this cannot be used by Ninja 250R, P180/200/220, ZMA-R/ZMR. Don't know about R15/CBR. Things would be different if they added more grades.

Adding to what Ritwik said, Car engine oils are rated JASO MB and have special 'friction busters' which aid FE of the car. These very 'friction busters' would cause clutch slippage in the bike. Actually if you use car engine oil in a bike, it actually returns better FE (personally tested by mistake ) but considering the cost of early clutch replacement, the lower FE Bike engine oil turns out to be cheaper .

Bike Engine oils are rated JASO MA/MA1/MA2. Difference is of additives used. So, they are not interchangeable. Thats why we shouldn't use Motul 300v in your car and Mobil 1 in your bike.

Antz, you are talking with a guy working with an oil company. So he obviously knows when he says that it is a myth created by oil companies.

in theory, antz is right... car clutches are of dry type contruction whereas motorcycle clutches are of wet type (to carry the heat generated due to much frequent gear changes and space restrictions for heat transfer). is a car oil is used in motorcycle, it will definately cause clutch slippage. the only unknown factor is telling when this will happen.

but as dk says, maybe the effect is much less in practice, but the manufacturers prefer to have seperate oil.

or maybe they (manufacturers) are right cos afterall they have experts employed to have the right formulation in oil. :P
