Your post is very informative ( good analogies used) Actually i was very unsure on which running in procedure to adopt. Read various posts about different methods like moto man method etc etc. To be on the safer side i was following what is given in the manual , "avoid sudden acceleration and hard braking" . When on highways i open the throttle gradually till 6-7k rpm and once had a 130kmph burst. Keeping her under 6k rpm most of the time and shifting gears between 3000-5000 rpm. I make sure i ride her everyday after office. I do about 8-10 kms every day ( short 25-30 minutes trip) with gradual gear shifts n acceleration. I hope there`s nothing wrong with the procedure i have adopted so far since i have cloked 500+ kms already.
