        • Witnessed a small accident right opposite my house, near New Karnataka High School. I was seeing off my father-in-law when I heard the sound of tyres screeching and metal rending. Sprinted to the site and saw a young girl trying to get up with the aid of a passer-by. The girl had been playing loud music thru the earbud head phones and must have been oblivious to the traffic sounds around her. As a result, she must have collided with another vehicle. She had a small flesh wound on the forefoot so I was quite relaxed. But then, I saw her head scarf drenched with blood which had obviously come from her ear or a head injury. An empty rickshaw chap obliged and I took her to Mangeshkar Hospital, filled with dread that this would be a repeat of the fate that befell my late niece Ishaani at Nasik a couple of months ago under near identical circumstances.

Called her parents; the mother arrived after about 20 minutes, looking tearful and distraught. The girl was apparently okay; she had had a nasty lump on the right hand side and was being sent for a CT scan. No puking, pupil dilation, shivers or any symptoms of severe brain damage were evident to a layman like me.

In the evening, called up the mom to check up about the girl. When I asked the lady whether the youngster would wear a helmet henceforth, the lady replied in the affirmative, adding that she would have learned her lesson. So, no lessons to be learned by the parents, it seemed from the tone of her voice.

The tragic coincidence was that this girl had shifted from Nasik to Pune a few months back and had been known my niece and the nature of her passing. Yet, there had been an acute lack of basic common sense on part of the parents to ensure that their girl did not suffer a similar fate. Had the impact been even slightly harder than it had been, the girl would have died in the matter of a few minutes, as had happened to Ishaani.

Educated, erudite, upper middle class people like these can be so callously flippant about rudimentary riding safety? They can afford to give a Blackberry device to their kids but not a good helmet? WTF is going on?

Firstly, I'm happy that you helped out the injured at the earliest. Because passers by do nothing in such cases than to wait and watch how one is dying for help, may be they are panicked or don't wish to get in hassle of cops or withdrew from taking responsibilities incase the injured dies.

Secondly, The outlook of parents these days towards automobiles is still the same, even I wonder, why don't the individuals themselves don't feel safe to use protective gear. But, you have to understand that we can't do anything in such matters apart from educating them with knowledge. We do have relatives, friends and colleagues, half of them are equipped with knowledge of protective gear. Others have reasons and explanations to avoid wearing of gear, can we force them? No, we can't. That's our bit in the end, but as said by you that you called the parents to check the situation and ensured the girl wears the helmet next time is a commendable thing, this was her wake up call. I just don't want or know how many wake up calls will make these citizens aware of their safety.

            • Some people never learn. My best friend's first cousin died in a motorcycle crash a couple of years back due to brain injury (no helmet) (All 3 of us were almost the same age). Still, my best friend, has the courage to ride around on roads in Nasik without a helmet though he cannot in Mumbai due to the helmet compulsion.

When I can't even convince my best friend to ride with a helmet on (not even by setting the example myself), how can we convince total strangers? The only correct way to do it is through strict implementation of existing laws. Nothing else can compel the general public to do the right thing.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I think listening to songs while driving is an equally bad, if not worse, habit to have. We can avoid a lot of mishaps when we can actually hear someone spamming horn behind our back.

                    • Newbie Ride to Smile Stone :

As we have around 15 riders confirmed for the ride, the next thing is to divide in groups based on the riding speed.

We will have 2 groups with the below speed categories.

In case someone's bike is still in run-in or not comfortable with the speeds, please let us know, 3rd group can be formed on basis of that.

For every group, there will be 1 lead and 1 tail. Lead has to direct the whole group while riding and the Tail has to make sure that everyone is in a sync with the group and in case anything happens, Tail should be able to speed up and inform the leads.
Inference: No one will overtake the Lead in a particular group and Tail will not overtake any member of the group in the course of normal riding conditions.
As we have many senior riders(more than the Newbies here), it should not be a problem to decide on that.

Seniors, please post if you want to be Lead or Tail.

BTW, I'd like to tail the Group-2, if that's fine with all

                      Please add your names:

                      Group 1 – 120 kmph+
                      1.

                      Group 2 – 100 – 120 kmph
                      1. Gaurav W - R15
                      2. Prabhat - R15
                      3. Imran - R15
                      4. Amrit - 200 NS
                      5.
                      6.
                      7.
                      8.
                      9.
                      10. Kuntal - R15(Tail)

                      Now to quote Vishwas sir:
"The speeds mentioned above are the top speeds and not minimum speeds of bikes. Please understand that this is not a test of your manhood or riding skills. Even Rossi on a FZ16 would not be able to overtake an unskilled guy like me on a litre class bike. This is a group ride with lots of riders with whom we have never ridden before."

P.S. Please try to be present at G2G tomorrow(the riders going to Newbie ride). We can discuss and clear the doubts there itself.

It was a fierce battle with the cheese on that Sunday morning in Mapro, both of us sustained casualties, but in the end, the one with teeth had the advantage...

And please don't grant me the "Sir" title, I'm just 25 and not even that experienced a rider.

So far there is only one Sir here in my books: Vishwas Sir!

Putting a signature here is just as hard as writing "About Me" on Tinder.

Also this being my first ride with you all i would request if anyone could lend me the riding gear... would like to discuss these things at the G2G today. Could you tell the closing time for the G2G?

I don't see there is any problem of Fazer keeping up with R15. It's not a race buddy, so dont worry. As mentioned 100 kmph is the top speed not the Min
Incase we have more members, we can always forma new group. But I dont think that would be necessary.

It will still be dark at the ETD of 0600h. If one of the objectives of the ride is to initiate new riders into night/low light riding conditions, then it is a good way to do so.

I feel really bad that I cannot participate in such rides with you guys. Somehow, my leave settings seem to be out of sync with the ride schedules

Green horns - do be extra careful about twilight conditions when the Sun is just below the horizon.

                              Have a great, safe ride.
