May I suggest a simple way of planning the ride?

We have an acronym in the Army. It is as old as the hills and the oceans and has been used by virtually every single officer of the arms at some point or the other. This is true specially for ex NDA chaps. It is applicable for every single operation whether in war or peace and for any formation from a squad to an Army Group. For bikers, I have modded the original a bit. It goes this way:

Z for "Zamin" (Ground) - everything about the terrain one is to ride on. For riders, it means the road and everything connected to it - surface, quality, length, turns, intersections, obstacles. Add as many FACTS as possible. Can be done on a sketch or map.

K for "Khabar" (Information) - originally, there are two types of khabar - "dushman ki" and "apni". For bikers, it will be only the "apni" khabar that matters. So, number of riders and their names, bikes, groups etc.

I is for "Irada" (Aim) - the aim. For example, this ride would have had an irada like"to ride from _______ to ________ and back". If superfluous, can be left out. But there is no plan without an aim...

T for "Tariqua" (Method) The exact manner in which the aim will be achieved e.g. start, ride formations, halts, stops. All responsibilities allotted here - ride lead, ride tail, group leads and tails etc.

B for "Bandobust" (Administration) - Assembly areas, Est Time of Dep (ETD), ET of Arrival, ET Elapsed, fuel, oil, lubricants, food, water/drink, places where available, repair and maintenance, medical, responsibilities. Names, places, numbers.

M for "Milap" (Communication) - Originally, code words, call signs, frequencies etc. Here, cell numbers of riders and their ICE numbers, hand (and leg) signals.

G for "Ghadi Milao" (Sync watches) - so that all riders are on the same grid.

Each part of the briefing to be done by a rider earmarked earlier.

At first sight, this seems a bit too much for a ride. But over time, one gets used to thinking in terms of ZKITBMG and then realises the wisdom of planning in this logical manner so that nothing gets left out. We all can have inputs on what to include and after this one-time effort, we have a template for any and every ride.
This is a total guide to project management and so very well described. Thanks Maneesh!

I also read your mail yesterday and feel that you have touched on a very important and sensitive point. I shall be driving this point myself at the G2G today. Will reply to your mail after the G2G.

            Hi NV and everyone else,
I have been out of action for the past 2 months owing to the proverbial CAT (rat) race, and interviews after that. But, I have been regularly following the thread for updates. It's really nice to see some good rides happening, replete with awesome pics.
I gather from NV's post that there was some kind of important discussion yesterday? I request one of the seniors to put it up here as well, for the benefit of those who aren't able to be regular at G2Gs, but are still very much bikers and xbhp-ians at heart
            Thanks a lot
            Kaushik

There were two parts to the important update. One of them involves planning a ride every month by the 5 member touring team of Kuntal, Aman, Imran and others. The second update was involving usage of helmets..unfortunately, we never touched on this point.

The second point shall be discussed at a forthcoming G2G.

So is 2nd and 3rd of March ok with the already confirmed riders? And also with others who want to join this ride?
Very True- "Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous. It is, however, extremely unforgiving of inattention, ignorance, incompetence, or stupidity."

I like- "Bikes are not supposed to be a rational decision. If you can park it and walk away without looking back to admire it, you got the wrong one."

Also there was a discussion in the last GTG about arranging the group ride in the first weekend of march, nothing is finalized yet though, expecting a Poll from Amrit about the destination and date
Don't want to disturb original planners plan by suggesting some new dates, if possible, will jump in on the dates you guys decide.
