hello

i am planning to ride from Pune to ahmedabad on 19 May 2013 on CBR....need suggestions on following

1. I would be riding alone and wish to reach on 19th Itself....and i need to get back on 24 May, same one day....is it doable, taking the summers into consideration?
2. the route to be taken? any time plans?? i mean if seasoned riders can please help me in making a plan?
3. the things to be carried...

I am looking for this data, as this is my first ride beyond 150 Km....

Very much doable. Pune to Ahd on 19 May and Ahd to Pune on 24 May. Bit of a strain but hey, who said biking is a bed of roses...

2. the route to be taken? any time plans?? i mean if seasoned riders can please help me in making a plan?

(a) Route Pune-Thane Ghodbunder Road-right turn from Fountain Hotel onto NH8 and then straight till Baroda - Ahd Expressway crossing, left turn onto old Baroda Ahd highway (no bikes on the new xprsway) to Ahd.

(b) Time Plan Driving directions to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India - Google Maps

G Maps says 9 hours 10 mins but budget for about 11 hours. Two major bottlenecks, one at Kamrej, the second at Bharuch. If clear, no hassles else you lose at least 1.5 hours.

3. the things to be carried...

Cash enough for the refueling and breaks enroute. Zilch credit/debit card transactions on this route. A tank bag (bungeed to the pillion) with following items should do the job:
(a) 2 litre water bottle. Refill at each halt.
(b) Hand towel. Dip into water and wipe face + neck, not any lower...
(c) Lube for chain
(d) Excellent sunglasses {NO DARK VISOR PLEASE} - the radiation from the road is terrible, the glare is atrocious
(e) Some sort of electrolyte like Glucon D/Glucose D etc if you perspire like Cherrapunji in the rains. Very easy to be badly dehydrated on this route. I was...
(f) Wear NYLON swimming trunks instead of cotton briefs so that the seams do not press up on the butt causing itching + numbness + pain. Also, the nylon will be slippery and NOT absorb perspiration so you are infinitely comfortable. Cdo course mein nylon socks for speed marches = the same benefit!

Additional tips:

Ride at an even 85 to 88 kph or so, never higher. Doing 100-125 is not worth it on such a light bike.

Quick 5 min break every 1 hour - input/output, fag, calisthenics, check bike, wind down, wind up, ride on.

One Coke + 1 tablespoon salt + pepper = excellent sugar kick!

I am looking for this data, as this is my first ride beyond 150 Km....

Then I must say that you should practice some 300 to 400 km trips pretty soon; Pune to Ahd is about 700 km... and you plan to do the return trip within 5 days. Does not sound too good under the present conditions, Bhasker. Get some brutal endurance practice in the heat of the day. Do a continuous time trip ( 0500h to 1700h) on a similar stretch as a simulation.

check with eshan, he's looking to sell his jacket, if you are on a budget then it would be a good idea to buy a used jacket as long as it isnt crash tested
for gloves theres quite a few shops around Pune, will let the other members tell you about gloves as i myself am using cheap probiker gloves...

route has pune - mumbai expressway (no bikes there) on it...so i am taking it as old highway.. so this give approx 10hrs 20 mins on Gmap...but Gmap counts halts??
as u know the work culture...where do u suggest should i try this time trip...may b on a sunday or 300-400 km trip?
last but not least...i wanna buy new gears as well...i mean the jacket and gloves...where should i buy from...i tried MG road shop...but fellow XBhpians have not a very good repo of him. and i am little tight on budget too.

byw, this all is kind of prep for a Leh'ed trip...i wish to do asap.

For tips on long distance riding, go through The Art of Safe Riding

Even if you are on a budget, at least get yourself leather gloves, they turn out to be more durable than textilegloves. I recommend DSG Revive.

There is an entire selection of jackets available in the market for all kinds of budgets, most of them do a good enough job. For touring purposes, pick a textile jacket over a mesh one. You should be good to go.

For a Leh prep ride, riding to Mahabaleshwar - NH17 and back, and then another ride to Sangamner, Sinnar, Bhandardara Malshej Ghat and back is better preparation than ride to Ahmedabad.
