      - A non-abrasive jacket with protective armor on elbows, shoulders, chest and back preferably leather AND NOT mesh
      - Full gauntlet gloves: Leather with Kevlar or carbon fiber knuckle protectors
      - Riding pants which has protection at your hip and knees preferably leather or other non-abrasive reinforced textile
      - A riding shoe that locks your ankle movements and has padding at heals

If we enforce the genuine safe standards then I guess only DK qualifies in the entire Mumbai chapter :P

And for those who love cornering on streets like they do on MotoGp. Shall I suggest the riding gear to be of the same level :P
There is a difference between minimum gear and a good set of gears.

Minimum gears are defined by high frequency high impact points namely knees, hands, head, elbows. Therefore the proposed minimum set of gears should be (and which stands currently) helmet, elbow guard, knee guards and gloves, apart from the common, jeans no shorts, shoes no chappals etc.

Let the induction happen at G2Gs and not rides. People are welcome to join us on G2G where there is already a relaxed rule about gears and there they can be "schooled" about safety and told that they must be geared for the rides.

I'm appalled that some of the senior and very experienced members suddenly feel its okay to come gearless for a short ride (only helmet or whatever is the new rule). This is a mockery in the name of safety. And how would this be defined further? 100kms or less come gearless else geared .. or first two rides come gearless there after geared?! or are we allowed to come gearless throughout until we get hurt? Trust me you will always find people who would take the option of no gears if they are allowed to come on rides simply because of a 1000 reasons and if there is no rule to enforce it.

Any argument against this I feel will fail TECHNICALLY and is just a way of bending the rules to induct new members. I'm a very junior member here when compared to some of the decision makers, but for me it would be a sad day for xBHP if this motion gets passed through majority vote.

I wear knee gaurds, and riding boots and even a spine gaurd for that matter! And this I have been doing since a while. Heck! At times I end up "donating" my knee guards too!

        Look at it this way.

Today you have an ability to influence x number of people. Most of the x have bought the state of the art riding gear and they continue to ride with safety gear. Whether or not they ride safe is debatable, but the problem is that x is a minority. The road still has a Y population which rides unsafe. They make our lives miserable too. They do crazy things, we get blamed.

What we aim to achieve is to take these Y people, and brain wash them and convert them into more X's

        How does it help
        1. Xs population grow, lesser perills caused by Ys on the road
        2. Xs ride saner as they have to set an example to Ys
        3. We get more Xs and so more birthday treats and what not
        4. Some of these Xs are chicks who want to ride, but dont.. we get to ride (with) them. Given a choice, am sure you would rather want to spend the evening g2g with this Y than apna kakkar or nunu

Actually the argument of high impact areas itself is flawed...
High impact areas as pointed by Shrinath Rao are as under
        - Hip
        - Knee
        - Elbow
        - Neck
        - Shoulder
        - Back
        - Head
        - Chest

And do whatever techinical analysis, every body would still say that Mesh jackets are unsafe. Why not switch to leathers? A leather jacket costs a small fortune (and heck DSG is now launching a leather jacket)
So to cut the long story short, this garb of "safe gears" isnt realy as safe as people are imagining. And sadly this isnt reflecting in the way people are riding! People are over speeding, cornering on public roads. At that rate, a titanium suit is more apt IMO!

And remember more members dont really give us ANY benefit except for the ones listed above (just 1-2 though)

          • No one can change the way a rider rides his bike coz it just requires common sense to ride sanely. Also no matter how sane the rider is, there are million of possibilities on road by which the rider can get hurt.
This applies in short rides/long rides/anytime after you sit on the bike.

About the gear mandate thingy, ATGATT ! As far as noobs are concerned, I think : No gear, No ride.
P.S. Awareness can be spread by different means, not mandating gear is very risky way of doing it.
P.P.S. Noobs try to show off on their initial rides, I think mandating gears and teaching them group riding rules keeps them under pressure to ride sanely.

            • In my opinion an example is always set on juniors when seniors are folowing the right way. Most of the people who are seniors & juniors need to have riding gears on (if this an Offline Xbhp meet). Riders coming for the first time can be given exception for not wearing elbow & knee guards & should be educated, only then they will realise the importance of safety gears.

I have never ever met any of the Xbhp guys in person nor i have done any rides with them nor i have attended any meets. But i must say that you'll are having one hell of a fantastic time. Hope to see you'll soon.
Ride Hard !!! Ride Safe!!! Enjoy every moment on your machine !!! Cheers....

I support him for one more reason i.e. my mother felt that I'm going on a race or riding with some rowdies when I 1st borrowed a jacket for a Long ride. I'll try to convince her & ride with basic gears that I own & come back home safe & on the other hand fulfill my riding passion. After few short rides she'll get it that xBhpians are all nice people. I'm just 19 plus my father is an NRI, so she's correct with what she says. I tell her stories when people were AGAT during crash & were safe so eventually she'll understand & voluntarily sponsor for gears I don't have currently & let me ride more regularly.

                This is my story.

The whole thing of inducting newbies into safe riding has stirred up things on mumbai thread.Ultimately only one thing counts and that is safe riding . Manavarcha brake -- Uttam brake.

P:S I have never had a crash in 35 years of two wheeler riding, but that does not mean that I will not wear gears.I need to understand my responsibility and act in accordance .

Some protection is ALWAYS better than none. More safety is always better than less. Again I repeat, aim for a minimum coverage. Naturally anything better would be better! Doh. Anything less is just forcing to get your way. Thank god the helmet law exists, or I fear that would go on debate too!

Also dude please don't pick out words against me . I said high frequency high impact .. don't look at only high impact. One of the worst high impact can be your crotch or tail bone, but statistically there are lesser chances of injuring that as compared to say your knees and palms. In the list you mentioned, the high frequency items also come into play and that's the list I'm talking about. Granted there is no ISO standard to define minimum gear required for safety, but I think the call at knee guards, elbow guards, gloves and helmet should stand as good protection in most minor mishaps.

                  • Thats precisely one of the attitude that we are trying to change kakkar. That these gears are more than apt for us to be riding the way we are doing today. (One of the two Xes)

And you might want to talk to your doctor, he would rate hip and back above elbow threats!

I remember the ducati ride being so successful & so many people turning up.

so the basic agenda is this:

                      1)meet at macD at 7.30
2)Ride with GIR team to BWM kamshet
3)Interact with others & a technical session by OF sir which will cover Riding skills, safe riding practices,Rider-motorcycle interface, motorcycle technology etc along with visual aids for presentation & all
