Simple rule, dont corner on known traffic infested roads and unknown roads... there is nothing skilfull about pulling a fast corner in a blind corner where you cannot for sure predict what would be waiting on the other side.Super CommuTOURer - Talk less, Ride more

When overtaking from the right, you should have looked at the speeding car beforehand before starting your overtaking maneuver. If there is an approaching car and you still decide to give it all, either you have to have confidence in your bike to pull it off.. or have enough good deeds in your pot that god spares your life.Originally posted by chiragwarm View PostAnd while over taking from right, suddenly a speeding car bumps into you where there is no divider, then how to handle ?
Anyways, if enough road is not visible for you to fully gauge if you will survive this overtaking maneuver, the smart thing is to bail out and try again later when you do see the requisite amount of road in front of you.
Also.. while overtaking from the left, what do you do if the car you are overtaking decides to pull over and stop exactly when you were going alongside and pushes you off the road? Into a ditch / valley / river / off a cliff ?Last edited by antz.bin; 12-16-2010, 07:18 PM.Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Sorry typing error I ment right. But while driving in mumbai traffic on NH3 I do overtake many a times from the left(go from the first lane to the second, I obviously check my mirrors and usually don't try and pull any dangerous feats)... is that advisable? Because I don't expect cars to give way to a bike( and they dont... I always stick to either the first or second lane).... I'm a newbie so please forgive if i'm doing anything wrong, and do correct me...Originally posted by Veeral View Post
Never overtake from left*, personal Opinion
I would rather be riding my bike thinking of God, than sitting in the temple thinking of my bike.

This is my personal opinion (as are most 'rules') but the "never overtake from the left" rule makes sense in one scenario - when you're overtaking someone in the same lane by squeezing yourself into the gaps in which case you'd rather try it from the right then left. Given the size of the lanes on NH3 its usually safe to overtake 'from the left' when you are in a completely different lane cause pragmatically speaking ure not overtaking at all, ure simply riding faster in your lane and drivers will usually maintain lane discipline. However, I will usually stay as far away from the vehicle on the right as I can to give him some 'breathing' space in case he needs to swerve to avoid a pothole or a pedestrian. The other thing to watch out for is the lazy lane (i dont know if that's the technical term but thats what i call the left most lane). During heavy traffic hours the lane is anyways full of bikes so not a big issue but during lesser traffic hours you might find it tempting to use the relatively empty left most lane to zip past traffic. I've been guilty of this and suffered because ricks will usually zip into the lazy lane and stop for no apparent reason (these days even to take calls on their cool cell phones!). The problem with the lazy lane is that its usually full of gravel (even on NH3) and consequently a hard brake could send you swerving into the rick (I have seen this happen). But overtaking someone in the first lane by using the second lane after checking ure RVM and indicating your intent to switch lanes is all good in my opinion. If someone has a better insight into this, do share!Originally posted by Horror View PostSorry typing error I ment right.
