• Advice needed for first time tourer

Hi guys,

First off i am new to bike riding in general, having learnt it only a couple of months ago and a bought a Gixxer SF last month.

I am planning on Chennai - Coimbatore and back (~1100K) this month end once after completing my first service. Right now in the process of buying riding gear's.

SO what is the best route? Anything in particular that i should know before i start on this. I will reply to any questions you guys have, just need some advice.

Thanks in Advance.

Congrats Kannan....if I read your post correct that you have recently learned how to ride bike, then I would not whole heartedly suggest you to take the highways.

First, you'll need to spend time with the bike riding and getting used to it. Most importantly to understand the throttle and braking of your gixxer than where you want to ride. Be it 50cc or 1500cc, unless you got the flair, it is not going to help you where certain situations just thrown at you and not knowing what to do.

For the other part of the post:-
Chennai-Vellore-Krishnagiri-Salem-Erode-Avinashi-Coimbatore.

Alternately you have the below option as well:-

Chennai-Villupuram-Ulundurpet-Attur-Salem-Avinashi-Coimbatore.

Hey thanks for the reply....let me expand on my previous post....I have ridden gearless scooters since I was in school. More than a year ago I got a used tvs jive and drove it around Chennai (usually commuring to office). Just that manual clutch bikes are new to me, and I leart riding them thanks to my friend who lent his apache.
I still drove this gixxer for 100km last Sunday, so I think I have a good feel of it.

Regarding the route, I did find these two as potentially easy, but just wanted to know if the roads are good or if any construction going on....that's sort of stuff.

Has anyone taken this route recently? Any specific areas to worry about?
Again thanks.

kannanmr16 - gearless scooter and geared bike are totally different category. Also, let me not sound discouraging, I've been riding bikes since 1995 when I got my license, but still learning something new.

Art of touring is very easy to write than done.
We are all exited to take the bike towards the destination, you'll be top of the world when you twist the throttle. The smile on your face will feel upto your ears. Every mile stone you cross adds more pep to your enthusiasm.

There are hurdles that you should know how to deal with.

Breaks:-

Since you are new, it would not be possible for me to guess your endurance before your butt aches kicks you. Fyi..too many breaks will not only take time to reach destination but also give room to fatigue to set in.

Breakfast & Lunch:-

How much ever you had traveled so far, will be challenged by The food that goes in. Many try going rounds and rounds of helping and end up having their blood flow slowing down and sink into comfort of begging for few more minutes of break before saddling up.

Hydration:-

Many, even some seasoned miss this important factor of hydrating at regular intervals. This is very important as this prevent from fatigue and fixed eyes.

Fueling :-

Calculated and good planning of fuel stops help you cover distance and avoid situations like running out of fuel.

Other perils:-

Plan the ride such a way that you avoid getting caught in peak hours or traffic congested time which could only prolong time from reaching your destination soon.

Avoiding dangerous and reckless riding as it is not going to do good but it awaits you making a mistake.

Respecting other vehicles on road encouraged and it portraits a good practice of being public friendly.

Always riding on the inner lane and leaving the right lane for cars ensures you not surprised when four wheelers come close on your left before they cut across leaving no time to react.

Most of the Trucks on NH watch out their mirror and steer right. So have patience before they give way but avoid irritating by honking all the way.

Always watch both mirrors now and then as most of the cars don't honk but throw enough surprise that air turbulence could shake your ride when passed by closely.

Always the last 100kms of big trip seem to be very long, but that's because of your tiredness. So by taking couple very short breaks could overcome the feel.

First but not the last. If you don't have good helmet, riding jacket gloves, knee guards and riding boots, cancel the plan and stay at home watch TV. [emoji39]

With regards to road conditions, you will be mostly riding on NH 4 lane and small stretches of 2 lanes(if via Atthur). Both are excellent condition all the way to Coimbatore.

All the best!
