ROYAL ENFIELD
The name which is known from decades in INDIA. R.F. the only company which manufactures 350 and + c.c. bikes here. THUNDERBIRD Most attractive cruzzz ever to hit the indian roads. 350cc producing 18bhp @5500rpm 2.8kgm @3500rpm. TB is the bike which gives you divine pleasure of riding. It is soo smooth that u can lay down your head on the tank and go to sleep when u are on highway in 5th gear b/w 60 to 80kmph( dont do this this is just for explanation ). While riding it gives you so much pleasure that you dont want to stop you want to go on and on and on.With its lean burn engine it gives a wonderful mileage as compare to its siblings of around 35+. One thing special about this bike is the riding position it is very comfortable even if you ride 100 km it feel that you have done only 10km. Talking about style its a beautiful machine. Finely crafted. Now i am starting this thread to discuss all the positive and negative aspects of this machine. One thing all TB owner are aware of is the timing gear problem after on an average 10k-15k km the timing gears are worn out this thread is to discuss this problem mainly and some other drawbacks also. like Rear breaks some time give KKKAAAADDDAAAAKKKK sound and break lever vibrates like any thing some tine in this event pads get broken ![]() ![]() This machine is one wonderful piece or art. Its a complete cruz and if u want to ride fast it can give strong competition to all the bikes available presently. But problems associated with it made it a flop. I have been sorting out these problems from past 5 years and now i finally got all the answers, now i want to share them with you. |

Timing gear problem
When initially when R.E. launched the thunderbird it become a flop. All of the customers were complaining about the wear and tear of timing gears. I myself got 2004 model and faced the same problem. i got my timing gears changed 2 times in just 27k km. i asked all the mechanics what is the problem whats wrong. some said the material is not good. some said design is not good. But what reason realy looks convincing is high tension springs. stiffness of head valve springs are very high. I replaced my head valve spring in 2007 after that i didn't faced such problem. But in 2007 company launched the new variant. this time there were more then 120 alterations in the bike. now timing gears are mounted on adjustable spindles not like the old model fixed spindle. Spindles are the rods on which gears rotates. now in adjustable spindles one can adjust the clearance between the gears and which lead to perfect meshing of gears due to which sound is reduced and also the wear problem. But still the problem is not resolved completely there are still some issue with timing gears not up to previous extent but still after around 30k i most of the cases they are worn out. though i agree, you can actually sleep on the RE. My GF would actually doze off sitting behind me after a night shift!!
the cam issues strangely did not occur with my bike. though i would like to suggest/advise owners of the old AVL engine, to keep the revs high. not below 2000 rpm. That will help reduce wear and tear. Done about 66-70k on my bike.

Hi! all,
I recently faced an issue with my TBTS. Though I've had the experience of a lifetime with the bike and love it more than anything else, the bike does have some issues and as I used always tell my girlfriend everyones not perfect otherwise we would have never had the need of the Marriage Funda. ![]() It all started when i just got my refueled @ a Fuel station in Hinjewadi, Pune. The bike simply refused to start after that, there was some problem with the electric starter and that was pretty obvious from the sound it made. I tried the Kick start option and it made a sound like the electric start. So was pissed of, puzzled, irritated, etc. whatever would want me to call it. I pushed my bike to a near by Mechanic parked it and asked if he would have any idea. (Free fund Advice: Never let these run of the mill mechanics even touch your bike). He said, "Nahi Sahib, humne kabhi Bullet ko nahi repair kiya" and he gave up. I tried all my "Bullet Doctor" Friends and my regular Mech, Friends suggested put it in a Tempo and send it to the Mech. So I did. So I talked up a bit with this Mech of mine and asked him what exactly was the issue. He said Saprk Clutch had taken a Beating. On asking How? the reply Shot off: "Woh part hi Faulty hai, Electric start bar bar marne se Kharab ho jata hai". No Specific number for that "Bar-Bar" on repeated attempts to get that info out . So the Learning is "Don't Forget, This is an RE at the end of teh day. Kick start is the Best". So I asked what is to be done he said Badlna padega. Price 3.5 K. Time: No Clue (Parts in Shortage) ... "RE parts are Costly and Rare". Then the Temprary Solution was remove it and use it with Kick start till it the parts Arrive.2 Days and Still waiting. So Now the question how many have seen this issue with their/ Their Friends bikes? Trying to get the picture as to where did i go wrong. Waiting for replies guys. Oh before I forget, the Bike is awesome and this price paid and effort put in is all more than worth it. Trust me you'll fall in Love with bike. |
