As the year 2016 ends, motorcycle manufactures have released their sales report for December 2016. Overall there is a decline in the sales percentage compared to December 2015 among all the manufactures except Royal Enfield and Yamaha largely because of demonetization. This especially affected high sales performers like Hero and Bajaj, which saw a significant impact and drop in sales percentage this year end.
HERO
Hero sold 3,30,202 units in December 2016, against 4,99,665 units in December 2015. The impact in sales drop of 33.9% in December 2016 is due to the company’s manufacturing facilities at Gurgaon, Neemrana and Haridwar were closed from December 26th-31st on account of annual maintenance, Hero claims. Over all, Hero MotoCorp sold a record 67,62,980 units of motorcycles in the period January-December 2016, with 4.3% growth compare to the previous calendar year 2015 had sold 64,86,103 units of motorcycles.
Bajaj
Bajaj Auto sold 225,529 units in December 2016, against 289,003 units in December 2015. The sales percentage dropped 22% compared to last year sales in December 2015.
TVS
TVS Motor sold 179,508 units in December 2016, against 194,001 units in December 2015. Sales dropped 8% compared to the last year sales in December 2015. TVS had clocked total sales (including all motorcycles- domestic and exports) of 1,84,901 units during the month of December 2016, against 2,02,021 units registered in the year 2015.

Rounding up the year, Mr. Rudratej (Rudy) Singh, President, Royal Enfield said “2016 has been a remarkable year for Royal Enfield. The motorcycle has received encouraging response from our customers across the country and on the back of this confidence we launched the Himalayan outside of India in Australia and Colombia in November 2016. The EU compliant Himalayan with an EFI engine was also showcased at EICMA auto show in Milan, Italy. Royal Enfield recently launched its first exclusive store in Australia and first exclusive gear store outside India in Jakarta, Indonesia in December. In India, we continued to strengthen our presence adding 117 dealerships (April to December 2016), taking our total footprint to 642 dealerships across India as on December 2016. Our retail growth is a significant milestone for Royal Enfield and is a testimony of our collective focus and passion to constantly enhance consumer experience. Royal Enfield’s simple yet evocative motorcycles have been aspirational yet accessible that provide the pure motorcycling experience to our customers. We have continued to increase our production capacity and we have sold 4,88,262 units for the 9 month period from April to December 2016, growing over 36% over the same period last year. Despite demonetisation, our order books continue to be well ahead of our ever increasing production capacity.”
YAMAHA
India Yamaha Motor sold 49,775 units in December 2016, against 38,833 units in December 2015. The sales percentage increased to 28% compare to the last year sales in December 2015. Yamaha had sold total 786,000 units during January-December 2016 period, against 594,000 units in 2015.
Yamaha Motor India Sales Vice President (Sales and Marketing) Roy Kurian said. “The new year holds tremendous opportunity for further growth as Yamaha will enhance its product portfolio with the launch of new and exciting models and will intensify its network expansion plan across the country, he added. “As a young brand fostering style and excitement along with innovation, Yamaha will continue to grow with a target of achieving 1 million sales in 2017”.
