  • Re: How Many Times You Crashed ?

    Hi,
    Sharing my personal experience about crashing;
    2011 30 june
I was excited to get the bike of my dreams, i did not know the proper methods of riding one not sure if any specific method existed.
Was returning back from tuition a mere 5 KMS ride but when you are new to riding even the shortest distance seems prolonging with audio visual information blasting towards you brain.
I was riding at a slow pace near a crossing when suddenly an auto decided to jump into my lane without prior indication. I was intimidated and applied the front brakes like i was hanging off the last branch jutting out from a cliff.
The second followed was the tarmac kissing my hands, elbow and lastly my week old bike.
Lesson learnt rely both on engine, rear brakes as equally as you do on ur front ones and use them as and when required.

I had 7 or more accidents within a span of 1 year which made me question my own riding pattern.

Started scavenging the net for proper riding techniques, came across riding courses in different countries. I copied a few to improve my own like serpentine curve could be practiced using cones at a back yard, straight line maintenance at low speeds help utilize clutch, brakes, accelerator. Etc.

I am still on that learning curve.

Having crashes can be embarrassing and fatal too.

People, fellow riders may at times even mock you without realizing the situation under which you fell. But it should be a must that one should get up back on the saddle, be more safe, learn from the mistakes, improve and keep on learning.

Recent crash i had was when i was group riding when i skidded 9 KMS on wet mud and was hilariously mocked at but i I took it with a pinch of salt and embraced another learning experience.

Ps# one of the most important lesson iv learnt is the requirement of a riding gear, and iv never ridden without a helmet and gloves in city and riding jacket and knee guards on highways.
    Ride safe always.

First crash riding 220 just left the building gate and there is this road around 150M or so and i must be at 80+ (Which is much more than i should have been on that road) suddenly i see this stone in front of me around the size of a small football i dodged it from the front wheel but the rear went over it and disbalanced the bike.
Fell on one side skidding for around 5-10 metres ,no damange to the BIKE just a bent leg guard.
Since i was wearing slippers(mistake) all fingers scratched.Hip scratched .Elbows scratched other than that no major injuries.

First crash : My brand New 2011 Pulsar 180, It was 5 PM and time to head back home after tuition classes, was a school kid then, Someone calls Rahul, barely at speed of 30kmph in I gear, I turn my head back, saw the girl :-P waved my left hand and vroom, pulled a wheelie while leaning slightly. No gears that time... No damage to bike, slight bruises to me...

Second Crash : 123 kmph, front disc brake on my Pulsar 220 locked when I was braking, flew off the bike straight to the water luckily, bike damaged a little but covered by insurance, was wearing a helmet this time.

Third Crash: Rear ended by a Scooter, slowed down after doing a 105kmph Highway blast, don't know what evoked a scooter rider, he was following me at its top speed of 70-75kmph, I braked and he kisses my bike's ass. Rear Panels destroyed this time.
Geared up completely, helmet, knee guards, jacket and gloves.

Fourth crash: Last week, was taking a corner, something went wrong. Attaching a screenshot from video.

Braking fast and locking mid corner. Plus no gears. You're lucky to survive so many high speed accidents. Kindly understand that having a relatively powerful vehicle doesn't make you invincible!
          Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

I know Divya bhai, I learnt my lesson. I don't roll without safety gears now, at least gloves and helmet is must wear for me. That was the time I used to be a jerk, a school kid, slowly met real bikers and transformed to one. :-D

It is good to know that you have matured, but that clip above is from the previous week's accident. Get a riding jacket ASAP. A torn jacket is much better than torn flesh.

Only 1 crash in my 2 yrs of ownership. This was around 1 month after taking my 1st bike- ZMR.

See everybody overtaking from the left here in guwahati. So, after initial hesitation, I also start doing the same without any horns or dippers. Was passing an Oil India bus in Fancy Bazaar area from the left. I Passed the bus from left & start going towards the right when the bus conductor from behind gives a shout. I ignore it. After split second, the OIL bus from behind hits my silencer & pushes my ZMR to the left. Damage done- Bent levers & Silencer. It was completely my fault as I shouldn't have overtaken from the left side. Also, big vehicles like Buses & Trucks have a huge blindspot due to which it's difficult for them to view close-range vehicles in the rvm. Fortunately, I was at a lower speed of around 10-15 km/h.

Lesson learnt: Always, honk when overtaking from left.

Luckily, for me haven't had any untoward incidents on my ZMR after that day onwards.

                    Motorcycle-2009 Bajaj Pulsar 180 UG4

                    Crashes-Two

Incident One-Kanpur,it was around 9pm returning from friend's place,on route through a dark dingy alley,Suddenly a dog(or was it a cat??) jumped in front.
tried hard emergency braking, front wheel locked up.
Aftermath-slight bruises on the left knee and the elbow,No head injury or such (was wearing a helmet)
the motorcycle suffered the obvious Pulsar Pilot lamp damage, slight fairing damage and a bent leg guard.

I don't think the below will count as a crash, rather its was a misfortune.

                    Incident two
-Kolkata,occurred recently,7:30-8:00 pm,was visiting a friend of mine,Parked the motorcycle at its designated place,
An hour or so came down to see it lying sideways left side,Petrol leaking from the top,no effing clue of what happened ??
                    Aftermath-I was A-Okay
the motorcycle suffered a serious dent and intense scratches on the right side of the tank with mild rashes on the leg guard as well.
My assumption-Some car, maybe while reversing or maneuvering hit my motorcycle.I am unable to compute further

                      Bike - 20days old Pulsar 180 UG4 and Yamaha R15 v1
Reason for crash - Street Racing
We were Intermediate students back then, Raj got his brand new P180 and Aaayush had his 1 year old V1 R15, both suddenly started racing on the streets of Pithoragarh ( A hilly district in vicinity of Uttarakhand), I was following them slowly on my 220(yes, slowly). At some 90kmph Both the bikes hit an Alto, luckily everybody was safe except for the bikes and survived without minor bruises.
Attaching a pic of P180 which suffered heavy damage.

PS : That was the day all of us realised the importance of safety gears and use of mind on road.

You dont need to have an accident to realise about safety. Racing on the street is utter stupidity. You are not only gambling with your life, but there are other innocent lives at stake!

The following are my unlucky experiences so far -

1 - On a cycle. Sped and fell on the slant edge of the road. Was lucky not to fall inside the drain! Escaped with a bruised knee and elbow.

2 - Simply riding my dad's super splendor in heavy traffic. A jam occurred in a cross section. Was in college uniform so fearlessly filtered through traffic. Just as I emerged from the jam, a scooty with two females came rushing from my left and hit my front wheel. I got hold of the bike but the forks were bent. As for those stupid pieces of useless fat and meat, also without any helmet, they skid through the road for some 20 feet alongside their scooty. Luckily for them the road was sandy. Did'nt have time for argument. Parked the bike and went to college. Policemen helped park the bike inside their outpost.

3 - First disc experience. Got hold of my friend's P135. And true to bajaj's nomenclature "light sports", me and the bike flew across the road like crazy. Was atleast 70kmph on the speedo(happened so quickly, didn't get to know what speed I was in) when suddenly a dog came rushing in front of me and stood stupid right in the middle. Braked as much as possible. Within a millisecond decided I needed more rear brake. Rear got locked. Still not slowing down, Decided more goddamn brakes. Finally the front also gave away and khrrrr khhrrrrrrr. All this happened within 3, 4 seconds. Luckily the dog did decide to run at the last moment. And I got bruises and cuts on my right knee and my fist. Scars never went away. The bike only got a few scratches on the handle grip and silencer.

4 - Stupid police. So I was riding with my friend on his P180. I was driving when the road cluttered up and I started filtering and slowly went ahead(10 - 20 kmph). When suddenly out of my front right blindspot(a big fu***** car), an SUV just cuts me through and tries to take the road on my left(T section). But just stops in front of me. Also the P180 had only the front brake in working condition and also the road was sandy on my side. So the sudden panic breaking locks the front and my friend jumps from his seat. And I fail to get hold of the bike and just leave it to fall and shout "Oi mokkel sett oi". Assamese foul lingo actually. Turns out to be a police van. But the man just gets out from his vehicle. Helps me lift my friend's bike and just f******g leaves without saying anything! Bike escaped with a bent leg guard and me and my friend with dirty hands!

5 - So I get to restore and own a 1990 KB-100 two stroke. Next thing I remember was me having a hell of a time on it. And the next thing I'm reminded of is that the tires are over 15 fu***** years old, as I fell midway through a corner!!!! My foot got badly injured and for the first time in my life, I saw my exposed bone. The bike only had minor scratch on the already decaying right hand grip.

6 - On the super splendor again. A damn auto just comes out of nowhere in traffic and bangs me on my left foot. I fall towards right and get caught on another accelerating discover. Nothing much happens to the bike. But raw meat gets scraped off my left leg by the gear lever. And I get another major scar for life. And a useless jeans that has been thrown away now.

Was always wearing a full face helmet! Except on the cycle (Duh!).
The key to happiness is a "key"!!!
Like the key in my DP.
That's why it's called the "key to happiness".

So far 2 accident but none in my bike😀..

One- Was going at around 20-30kmph in my sister's one month old access and reached a damaged section of road. The damage was such that my half was damaged and other half was good. A splendour came on the opposite side at a similar speed. Since there was no other vehicle on the road at that time, I honked and went to the other side since there was planty of space for the other bike. But the other rider didn't notice me and we both turned the bike to left of each other and both bikes side swiped on the right side. Luckily, we both managed to slow down and stop the bike without falling but the side skirt of the access was scratched. Was fortunate enough to make sure my right leg stayed on the floor.
Damage- Few scratches on the scooter and none for me.
Lesson learnt- Do not panic and to monitor the other rider's reaction before making my decision.

Two- Me and a friend(pillion) of mine were returning home on a busy two lane road on my dad's caliber. Was going at a speed of around 50kmph when a school boy on cycle came from the right to join my lane. At first, he came and rode at the middle of the road. I honked and he looked back at us. Thinking it was OK, I overtook him but he suddenly moved into my line. Tried to evade but handle bar hit and 3 if us fell. Friend managed to roll while I had to jump on the road from the bike. Onlookers helped and asked us to leave while they helped the school boy. Lucky we didn't have any other vehicles behind us at that time. The funny thing was that my dad just said accidents do happen and took me to hospital while I was expecting a hugh piece of advice.
Damage- Bent clutch lever, gear lever, handle bar and crash guard, scratches on plastic parts, saree guard and handle bar. Friend had few bruises while I had injury on hands and legs. Thigh was saved by mobile phone while the pant was thrown away after reaching home. The boy had a small cut on forehead but nothing serious.
Lesson learnt- Riding gears importance, caution with school students.

While my bike is touchwood so far, I did realize the effect of practicing panic braking with my friends when riding on the highways while raining. Due to rain, reduced speed to 60 on the highway(4 lane) while riding on the high speed lane. The other lane was occupied for parking by white shirt people. Out of the crowd, an old man simply entered into the road without any warning. Had a close call but those panic training paid off as I exerted the max braking without skidding the bike on wet road. Nowadays I wear a minimum of helmet wherever I go with my bike and those incidents has made me think twice before doing any maneuvers on the bike.
