  • It is still very difficult for them to understand that some one can tour on his bike, they does not even allow me to travel 300-400KM in a day from city to city...

I have done many rides from Delhi to near by almost 400KM in a day and I had to lie them every time, that I am not going trough my bike....

      • This happens everywhere...not just in India
All our nearest and dearest ones are reluctant to allow us to embark on road trips, and they are absolutely right and entitled to this view.
News about road accidents, reckless driving of truckers, bus drivers and now a days road rage justify their views.
        I also faced this resistance.
My nearest and dearest one are always reluctant to allow me for any road trip. But they never say anything as stopping someone right before a venture is considered inauspicious.
Talking to my loved ones about road safety, riding responsibly, exploring nature around us, experiences of a road trip, how it helps me relax from daily humdrum and pictures and videos of my road trips have convinced them to a great extent and they have accepted road trips as my life style.
Bottom line is their reluctance is a well justified sentiment!

Same here, But I try not lying to them though its really not possible not to lie to them and then go for trips. Moreover when We talk about good quality helmets and jackets etc riding gears that can reduce injury from a possible accident, My Dads specially say this everytimw "U race, No allow, cHabi lele isse" or more persistent one "Sell it no, why keep danger in house" .. Thus, for short ride of 300kms or so, I say Im going oer to my friend's place.<label for="rb_iconid_14"></label>

            • im too optimistic.
bought gear and all but never got parents permission.
saved money to do trips but still no from their end.

might as well try the lying idea as many others.
but problem is they know well that when i try the gear on,im not in for a short city ride!!!

good news is my gf(who il be marrying next year) has allowed me to do tours!!
Our bikes can go from 0 - Stupid in less than "I wonder if this will be a good idea"

              • I guess I'm lucky in this regard.

Initially I faced resistance from my dad, who has himself covered around 2.5L kms on his Splendor in 14 years.
I never lied to him. I showed him various trip logs, made him aware of riding gears and safe riding. Showed him the pics from 1st GIR.

He was very apprehensive during my 1st trip, 150 kms one side.
He said, why 300 kms on a bike? But he allowed me when I persisted.

He was happy to see me return in one piece.
Though I got a lot to hear when I slept the whole day thereafter. (no endurance, you see) - what's the point of touring on 2 wheels when you get tired so much etc.

Slowly I toured 300 kms one side. His rants continued.
But I was shocked to hear him encourage me for the ~900km Chennai-Yercaud trip. He was actively participating with me in planning the itinerary.

So, my point is - Parent's aren't our enemies. They want the best for us, but many times they hold you back due to latest developments they see on TV/ignorance.
Sit with them, talk to them. They aren't as stubborn as few perceive them to be.
                Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

                    • I have faced similar issues - my parents were against the idea when I told them I will be commuting 33km up and 33km down college on a bike, and I only managed to convince them to let me do it after there were no counter-arguments left: I hate public transport buses since they are filthy, crowded and messy, college bus has a non-functional suspension and I cannot leave/reach home whenever I want and I cannot drive a car (and even if I could the i20 1.2 is a petrol drinker)

When I tell them that I plan to take trips to nearby attractions on a bigger bike that I'll purchase when I start working, they look at me like I'm some sort of alien who does not know how life is.

Then I show mom the Ninja 250R 2013 ABS that shall launch exactly at around the time I start working full-time and she asks me what it costs. When I say it could be around 3.5 lakhs next year, she asks me why can't I buy the Tata Nano Diesel when it launches around the same time instead at the same price.

My dad is against the idea of spending the smallest of amounts in bike upkeep. He says oil needs to be changed only once in 6 months (but that is because he only rode 32000km from 1999 to 2012 Jan while I did 9000km from 2012 jan till date ) and scrons at my idea of hot-rodding it even if I say I'm doing it with my cash (what is the point of spending this much on an old bike ? I never spent a penny on it and you spent 15k already and blah blah blah).

He does not believe it when I tell him I get a higher mileage than what he gets (because I apparently ride faster while he lugs at 25km/hr in 4th gear) because of me choosing to be in the peak torque zone as much as possible and changing gears optimally for that. Dad still thinks ABS (in both cars and bikes) is just something unneeded that is sold to increase the company's profits. Yeah sometimes ignorance is a factor as well when it comes to parents and bikes.

But you know what ? There IS some kind of sense in what they talk as well and I must admit they have been right in a few areas. I used to think I'll never ever need to buy a car until monsoon arrived a few weeks back that also happened to be my first monsoon experience.

The feeling of heavy and cold raindrops landing on my chest (covered by a thin cotton formal shirt) like machine gun bullets all of a sudden out of nowhere was indeed something I never liked (I always take bath in hot water ) and after it happened thrice, I decided maybe touring to Ooty and Kodai on a Ninja was not SUCH a good idea as it seemed considering how much it rains along that route. When biking, its essential to plan your trip very carefully and be prepared for mother nature's frequent trolls.

Sometimes its inconvenient to wear so much gear and carry a lot more on the bike. Once I had to be present at a formal occasion and my hair was all messed up due to the helmet and my shirt was crumpled slightly due to wind blast and my backpack that was lugging at my shoulder. I had to visit the restroom to make myself presentable again.

Come to think of it, a 2013 Nano Diesel would indeed be more practical because I could wear whatever I want, dump my luggage in the back seat and just sit inside the car and drive and reach the destination looking exactly the same as I did when I left home. And this point is something that is hard to accept but true.

Maybe that is the reason both bikes AND cars continue to exist in the market. Each has its own advantages and drawbacks, and each is meant to be enjoyed in a different way.

PS: Sorry for the crazy amounts of philosophy and introspection I used.

                      • ^^^^as the saying goes if you don't ride in rain, you don't ride.you can always use rain-coat.but getting drenched on return journey from college is my personal favourite.
now lying and touring part,i have done so quite a few times, but my parents have given me positive signal, me seeing me indulging in some good riding gears.i feel lucky considering i am pretty young but i have the permission for touring.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

#i have learnt to manipulate my own adrenaline and the perception of biking is different.
                        #overkill is underrated.
#how random roads may appear there is always a destination.sigpic
#i don't subscribe to co-incidence,either it is the rider or the other moron on the road

(:)people keeps on saying add spark to life, bajaj got hold of that idea and added an extra spark to bike.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

                              • You are not only one here ! And as i see, you aint the most unfortunate biker. We all are starved of better bikes, roads, fuel and all.
Firstly you own a 200+ cc bike, which in itself is a premier bike. Most people here come with a meagre budget and ask for suggestion on a mileage oriented bike.
There are people on xbhp, middle aged, who've been doing tours with their better halves with half of your engine capacitys bikes. And happily too.
Secondly you still are a student, Will grow gradually with finances, will earn soon enough to buy a ZMA in a month's paycheck. Things change dude, stay tough. You are being too broken for a biker.
Being biker means enjoying the ride, whichever it is. You may have bought wrong ride in first place. I'll suggest take the things in Priorotized manner and make the things in the Reality perspective.
You should search and read this R1 thread
