This process usually takes 1-2 minutes to complete on my HTC TYTN II when standing still and has an accuracy of a radius of 5-10 m.

A-GPS uses other data such as accelerometer feedback / nearby cellular tower locations, which gives you the ability to find a fix within 5-7 seconds though it is not very accurate (radius 70m). But this semi-fix helps the satellite positioning in getting to a stable fix within 30 sec(i.e. much faster)

This position is then superimposed on to a map which may be embedded in a software(like Google Maps / MapMyIndia iNAV / Wayfinder / Destinator / Nokia Maps). Without a mapping software, GPS is pretty much useless. If you really want to use GPS on your cellphone, I would seriously suggest you against going for a Nokia(read symbian).

I personally use MapMyIndia iNAV 2009 edition as it utilises AGPS and is exceedingly quick. has 41k+ points of interest and can provide turn by turn instructions for routes ranging from kashmir to kanyakumari. It also has intra-city maps for 40+ (i think) major cities incuding my own. You can get a cracked version download if you google it properly.

Nokia Maps is not available for more than 2 cities for free. I am not aware about its highway capabilities. Maps for extra cities require paid downloads.
Usage after 1st 30 days is also paid. (Monthly Fees)

Nokia GPS works only with Nokia Maps Software (Read Crap). If you want to use it with iNAV, you will need external bluetooth GPS (which also works with any othe Bluetooth NON GPS Phone). So no use buying Nokia for GPS usage.

GPS is usable satisfactorily only on WinMo phones
GPS on HTC is very Fast.
If you need good media capability, buy HTC Touch Diamond. 192 MB RAM (INR 20k not sure though)

Basic WinMo GPS Phone is HTC P3300 64MB RAM (Just enough for GPS usage)

Both above phones have no keypad as such. Pure touchscreens.

I own HTC TYTN II, basically a P3300 with 128 MB RAM and sideways slide out full qwerty keypad. (imported frm USD $200)

My Elder Bro uses a HTC Touch PRO wid 288 MB RAM (Too Much surplus) which is basically Touch diamond with side slide out full qwerty keyboard (USD $400)

All above mentioned models have the aforementioned A-GPS and WiFi b/g (P3300 No WiFi)

P.S.: All above mentioned phones are 3.5G (HSDPA) Capable
Also you will need a Car Charger for using GPS on phone, as most phones will discharge completely with 2-3 hrs of continuous GPS usage.
thank you antz.bin for the detailed explanation...

Try going for Nokia 5130 Xpressmusic. It costs 5800/- and has near excellent music quality...

and by the way, A GPS is Assisted GPS (not "advanced" GPS). Moreover, it uses network and internet to determine the position more accurately.
The 2-5 minutes work is reduced to 30 secs or so ...

                  1. how good is the speaker quality ? is it loud enough ?
                  2. advantages & disadvantages of nokia 5800
                  3. any other better model in 16-17k range ?
You can use GPS to measure Speed, trip distance, browse maps, determine location, etc.

You can browse Google Maps unlimitedly, but you have to pay for internet charges, as maps stay for only a week or so. I already explained A GPS in my last post.

                  1. Loudspeaker quality is good. Its not the loudest out there, but its loud enough. Although, earphone quality is near excellent!

                  2. Main advantages are Large Touchscreen, Music Quality, etc. Main disadvantages of nokia 5800 are quite bad camera, structural unreliability, less apps right now, etc,

                  3. Nokia N79 - good audio quality, great 5 MP Cam, but no touch, lots of apps on internet, A GPS, etc.

I suggest that if camera is even slightly on your agenda, go for N79 only... But if you need Near excellent music, ONLY then you should choose 5800... Just remember that N79 is like an allrounder, and 5800 a music specialist with bad camera ...

Although, I have not personally tested this set, but from what I know, I can say it would be a great substitute for your TYTN.
Talking of disadvantages, it has a very average camera & Video Resolution (240x180) is also quite less (but acceptable in these type of sets), and despite good audio quality overall, has less BASS, and has no FM Radio...

Overall, the change is worth it. You can read the review here to get used to it:-->

Yep, Googlemaps work very well on 5800, I have been using its since many days. No problemo.

For your reqs, 5800 suits well. Camera quality is decent.
