Re: Motorcycle speed limit in India

Shouldn't highways have minimum speed limits too?
We see so many tempos, slow moving motorbikes, Bullock carts and what not which pose a greater danger than going few kmph above the speed limit.

there was a same incident with me...@ Belgaum city road where you enter the city from the highway via KLE.

i as fined for overspeeding by 10 km/hr and i had to pay the fine of rs 300 to the police but i ended up paying double the amount (Rs 600)

as he had the speed gup to get the speed count.

i did go back on the highway and did enter back in belgaum with the speed of 186 and did stop at the police car, to get the right speed ..

the cop just nodded his head off and i did leave the place coz i had to get to the meeting held in belgaum.

I was anyways riding above the speed limit.. So it was fine to be fined..

However I feel some highways like NH4 should have 10 or 20 kmph more limit.. Because NH4 is 3 lanes per side and is in very good condition, plus it bypasses all cities/towns on the way, plus service roads are separated by a barrier / fence due to which there will be lesser intervention of people trying to cross the road.. But still we see accidents in this route.. Wish people were more disciplined.. Or the license system should have more tests or training programs like UK / US..

              Speed Limits in India

After a debate with a friend about a recent incident about a speedster minor in a Mercedes who killed a techie I really wondered what are the speed limits for cars and bikes on city roads specially for Pune because I don't see sign boards etc. Current bikes being sold in the market can touch 120 km/hr easily.

Re: Motorcycle speed limit in India

I follow this rule: Start earlier> enjoy slow and safe ride >reach earlier. So I have no complaints regarding speed limit.

Re: Motorcycle speed limit in India

I drove my car @ 220kmph & bike at 170kmph on highways. I feel 120 is safe speed for cars nowadays. My car can run safely till 180.

180 is not only highly unsafe but totally illegal. Our Indian conditions are not meant for such speeds and driving at those is a tragedy waiting to happen.

IMO anything above 100 is in excess according to our conditions.
I usually keep my speeds at 100om highways with occasional bursts to 120. (Talking about the car)
On a bike, usual speed is around 90-110 on highways.

Eventhough it's illegal Safety also depends on the vehicle you own. My car (Cruze)has max speed of 220 but I usually keep it around 140. 160 in some stretches. if too clear burst to 180. Slow cruising speed is 120.

In cars like Audi it ll be much safer.

In bike (Duke 390) safe speed is 120 burst to 140.

Did max on both bike and car 220 & 170.

Not legal. But "This is INDIAAAAAA"

high speeds give less time to think in a dangerous situation (reaction time)

so drive/ride at speeds which you are comfortable. Indian roads are really bad quality wise.

So you are saying just because your car and bike can attain that speed you can break the traffic rules.

Did once and survived - good for you! Don't do it again.
You're as safe as the weakest link on the road.

Supercars come with ceramic brakes that guarantee a 200 kmph to zero in 4 seconds. Impressive, isn't it? But what about the distance covered in those 4 seconds?
Let's make this a mathematical case, where for simplicity the supercar decelerates by 50 kmph per second.

Second 0 - brakes applied at 200 kmph or ~56 meters per sec (mps)
                              Second 1 - car is at 150 kmph ~ 42 mps
                              Second 2 - car is at 100 kmph ~ 28 mps
                              Second 3 - car is at 50 kmph ~ 14 mps
Second 4 - car stops (though it would have traveled some distance between 50 to 0, but let us discount it for simplicity).

Total distance traveled is roughly 140 meters. You saw a child/jaywalker/dog/cow/pothole/unruly driver or rider etc at 200 kmph just ahead of you and you braked HARD with awesome reflexes (without any time loss) - you still stop after almost 150 meters! The intruder by now would be mowed to death. I'm sure Chevy Cruze doesn't have half good the brakes as a supercar.

Also, most superbikes have better brakes than most common cars on sale in India. Why do they crash then?
Because, it is "always" the user of the machine and not the machine itself.

Lastly, this is INDIAAAAAA because of road users like you. We don't support such behavior.

You have been served an infraction. Next time - permanent ban!
