  • No it was the bridge rectifier.
And the stock RR unit had conked off.

and I was sitting on that pillion seat when this happened.

Giving a lot to a fiero.
Expecting a lot from a fiero.

      whoa man!!!
      did your bike catch fire?
P.s.-what is RR? (sorry if its a lame Question)
Men who still dream of being a pilot or an astronaut are yet to ride a motorcycle.

Yes the stock RR unit failed and was giving out excess voltage. This excess voltage heated the bridge to the point of burning. The rubber sheet below the seat that comes stock caught fire because of the burning bridge.

The bridge was a KBPC3510 35A packaged rectifier. I was running Rahuldevnath's circuit which lasted for a whole year and would have lasted even more. But the bajaj RR gave up.

RR unit stands for Regulator and Rectifier unit. It is responsible for charging the battery at the precise voltage required. But when it develops a fault, the output voltage exceeds the required voltage and other things start conking off.

          • similar kinda thing happened with my bike also when i was experimenting for DC conversion, though it didn't caught fire.....i was using stock RR and APE RR in parallel. Stock RR konked off first then APE RR and so on..... my mechanic scared the shit out of me saying BCU has also gone off....luckily it survived. never use cheap RR or Two RR's as these are not made either to be run in parallel or series. changed to APE RR then and happy now since 1 year.....

            • The BCU is a really useful thing I realised. It kept the speedo from conking off. It protected all the other electricals from conking off. It has over-voltage protection it seems.

Prince it was not an extra RR. In your case it was the common ground that made both the RR's conk off. However, the regulation part in my arrangement was done by the Bajaj stock RR itself. The add on was just a rectifier. The circuit I was using was tested by Rahuldevnath extensively. He had been touring on his old P180UG3 with this kind of a DC conversion.

The ape RR is a sturdier device and that is what I am going for now! Unable to find it anywhere though. All the Piaggio service centres are out of stock when it comes to the RR.

You still seem to be smiling...so whom have you thought of blaming ? Bajaj?

I know you are going for a different RR now...but is the stock RR under warranty ? Would Bajaj replace it for free ??

ya you are right.....i had spoken to rahuldevnath for his circuit......
i suppose most of us are now using APE RR.

Oh, so this was the reason for your bike going blazing red on the highway!

BTW, you have guts to run a bike with malfunctioning RR unit. Just imagine the battery overheating and exploding, acid and all.

@Nano - I hope, nothing happened to your rear side!

                          LMAO!!

@Abhijeet: Man I didn't think at all. Actually the RR has been this way for a month now. The bike used to run good in the city. Hardly 15 min rides at 30- 35km/h max. So I rode it as I could have got the RR and the stator installed the same day

EDIT: Got the rock solid APE RR with a nice rewinding job on the stator finally!

                          • Caution at u-turns from an incline

I rode uphill to Nandi Hills (Bangaloreans will be familiar), & was taking a right u-turn at 0-5kmph, when I lost balance of the bike & fell to my right.
The fall was possibly because of increased distance to the road (due to decline at the turn) when taking the turn.

The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.

                            • I tried to get my knees down along an S curve strewn with gravel. I did get my knees down....along with my heart up my mouth and my tail between my legs for every subsequent stunt craving.

Sorry, dont have any pics now..

I sold the exhaust for 9k (the only decent part of the kit)
cam for 4k (I felt it was pointless on a stock bore.. destroys the already weak initial of r15 and make city riding hell.. tried to compensate with K&N but no use..)
                                ECU donated for higher purpose

Now running joel's big bore and exhaust..
PM me for Daytona Racing ECU for the R15
